Why did you do Show Stannis instead of Book Stannis? Book Stannis is so much more interesting and competent - the show version is a poorly written shell of a character whose rational breaks down in the 4th season. Book Stannis successfully forges alliances with the northern houses, incorporates wildlings into his army, has a plan to rescue Rickon - show Stannis looses his mind, betrays all his principles, and murders his daughter.
I think you are thinking of the statement by the showrunners that Martin told them that Shireen would burn. It should be noted that nobody, Martin nor the showrunners, claimed that Stannis would be the one to burn her.

I disagree. He gave his bannerman (I believe it was a Mallister) explicit orders that he should place Shireen on the thrones should he die. Stannis is a slave to duty, the only reason he fights is because it is his duty to sit on the Iron Throne and preserve the rightful succession. Shireen is next in that rightful succession, and were she to die, with Renly and Robert dead without trueborn children, House Baratheon would be extinct. Without Shireen, Stannis' closest living relative is his 2nd cousin, Daenerys (yes that one). I also don't think Stannis is in any position to burn Shireen. He is (I believe) a 3 days march from the Wall where he left his daughter, has no desire to go back, and is in a much better position than show Stannis (with every indication being that he is going to defeat the Bolton force sent to attack him). Finally, I find it far more likely that Melisandre will do the burning without Stannis' knowledge, should Martin not change his mind about burning Shireen. Mel has far fewer reservations about burning sacrifices, and she is far less concerned about keeping the Baratheon line going then she is about ensuring Azor Ahai's success. Additionally, should she come to believe that Jon is Azor Ahai, not Stannis, she will probably burn Shireen for her kingsblood without a second thought in order to ensure his resurrection and success.

I feel like George has lost interest in the story since the show has passed up the books and doesn't care if he finishes it. Either that or he's trolling everyone and never planned on finishing the books from the very start.
I don't think Sanderson would be a good choice for finishing ASOIAF. Sanderson is properly my favorite author but I don't think he would do the series justice.

Stannis had already proven his worth during the siege of Storm's End, so he sounded like the perfect candidate. Stannis is simply very dogmatic when it comes to rules and tradition and already had an infected relationship with his older brother, that's why he saw it as an insult, as its actually more of an honorary assignment.

About Stannis during Robert's reign... Well he wasn't in isolation, he helped Jon Arryn to rule the 7 kingdoms for 17 years untill Jon died, he was the one who helped him to investigate Robert's bastards and he had one of them in dragon stone to take care of
Pretty good aside from one minor thing about Robb being a rival to Stannis for the throne. The two might have been able to work something out if they had met but weren't able to.

All the northern houses like house Glover and Mormont that pledged allegiance to him in book 5 are non believers and half of his army. Also he stopped burning people.
