@@abraham2172 Tywin kept the land rich and at peace. Everybody knew that. This made Aerys upset and started to push him away. The Targaryens started a Rebelion that ended the peace. The Lannisters aren't psychos who just want to torture people, they enjoy peace just as everybody else, but don't mock or try to take power away of them (as the Tyrells did). Also, the suffering of the people was created by all of the houses who participated to war.

House Targaryen: OP AF with and even without dragons. However the mad ones and idiot ones ended up f*cking them over (Also the only family in fiction where they have an argument for incest).
Baratheons: Great warriors and somewhat good leaders leaders, bad at everything else.
House Tyrells: Were the richest house resource wise and have the largest army yet were still useless (yes the Battle of the Black Water victory was in huge part to them but after that they barely did anything).
House Lannister: Half are 300 IQ geniuses or warriors, the other half make me reconsider the previous fact.

I think the term "Pawns, not players" perfectly describes Tywin's greatest failure when leading his house. He was so fixated on taking the reigns and securing power for House Lannister that even the family he claimed to care for became nothing more than pieces on a board to him, leaving them unprepared and unfit to take over should something unfortunate happen to him.
An apt observation. Had each of his children felt his love in some way, they would have brought the Seven Kingdoms to their knees for him. Instead, they despised him and saw in him only a means of protecting themselves.
I don’t think he can be blamed for his kids incompetence. Sure loving them more would’ve helped a bit but I don’t think it would’ve changed the underlying issues. Jaime only ever had 2 things on his brain throughout his whole life: fighting and screwing Cersei. While Cersei is just crazy and has been since day one. He gave his kids a house Lannister that was at the top of the world and in mere months Cersei has done her best to ruin it all. You can blame Tywin for tyrion though.
@@connorgolden4 I think he can, though. We only ever saw Tywin admire Jaime based on his abilities, and did little to harness Cersei’s passion into something productive. Had he displayed some unconditional love for them, they could have dealt with losing their mother and bore the weight of their responsibilities like adults. “When soldiers lack discipline, the fault lies with their commander,” and the same goes for children and parents.
If not out of love, than at least out of pragmatism, he built that house with him as it's keystone. He seemed to act like there was little to no chance of him dying before his ambitions were met even though in both versions he was getting on in years. The most he did to "Prepare" his children for rulership is to tell them to cut their shit only to treat them as his tools right afterwards. So when he did croak, what did he leave behind? a tyrant, a drunkard, a literal child and a loyal mutt. Tyrion at least was the most capable of his children, but even he couldn't do much more in the end than play vizier for the only woman in Westeros more power hungry than Cersei
He was doomed even if his children were great people. He fetishised pragmatism above and beyond reason; being certain that it was perfectly fine to make as many enemies as you like so long as you are more powerful than any of them, and finding out that even though this can make you strong for a time, as soon as that strength slips instead of just losing status and standing, instead they were utterly destroyed. Everything Tywin did to take power sowed the seeds of the political disasters that propelled the Lannisters to power and eventually destroyed them, and that is the point.
The last time I was this early the Starks were still drinking their coffee in Starbuck cups.
Tbh Tywin kinda dug House Lannister’s grave. He concentrated so much power into himself and demanded so much obedience from his children to execute his plans he practically ensured there would never be a reliable replacement for him after his death. And after the amount of enemies he made during his time as the head of the House, this made the Lannisters doomed to fall

@@youtubeuser8232 Even if Tywin recognized Tyrion's intelligence and cunning he still would not have groomed him to take over the house. His vassals would never respect a dwarf and letting one take over the house would lead to endless chaos in the west.
Tyrion because kind of just another character about 3/4 of the way into GOT, say what you like but he became a bit of dead weight near the end.
he was also legendarily petty and cruel for no reason, especially to his son Tyrion. If he had accepted his wife's death and acted a bit more honorably perhaps he'd still be alive.

Exactly. People often speak about Tywin centralising power too much, but Kevan was a might of his own. Not Tywin's level, but far from pathetic, even in comparison.

Gardeners were definitely NOT a "petty kings". Redwynes, Hightowers and others maybe but Gardeners no. Along with the Lannister kings of the rock those two great western monarchs reigned supreme when it comes to power and prestige for thousands od years!

Maybe, but probably not the iron borne had already conquered much of the riverlands and the crownlands harrenhal would’ve been impervious and House Gardner of the Reach was able to keep them busy for thousands of years, being there greatest rivals and never getting conquered so if Aegon didn’t invade not even all of House lannister’s army would’ve been able to deal with these threats as they didn’t have super weapons like dragons just armies and not every generation had a tywin or tyrion lannister on the throne

The two houses he defeated had become the heads of an alliance amongst the Lannister vassals. They could've fielded an army large enough at the very least to turn the armed revolt into a full on civil war. The Reynes and Tarbeks had taken enormous loans from Tywin's father and refused to pay them. The roads were eaten up with bandits because the Reyenes and Tarbeks and their allies wanted the chaos to make the Lannisters look weak. When the recently knighted Ser Tywin returned from the War of Ninepenny Kings he sent his brother Kevan with a force of veteran knights from the war to clean up the bandit problem and issued a call for everyone who owed House Lannister to pay up or handover hostages.

The best example of the difference between the modern Starks and Lannisters I've seen is the comment that "can you see a desperate alliance of the lesser lords of the Westerlands going through thirty foot deep snowdrifts in the middle of a terrible winter to besiege a notably ruthless Warlord to rescue Cersei? Yet Eddard's Bannermen are doing so. Tywin's let his children fail.
People forget GOT is an outstanding series on its own sadly so much ptsd from the show.
