After framing an architectural plan of a building, structural planning is done by deciding the Position and orientation of columns followed by positioning of beams, spanning of slabs, the layout of stairs and finally selecting the proper type of footing. Overall, the basic principle of deciding the layout of these components is the transfer of loads from the superstructure to the foundation along the shortest possible path.
The columns should be oriented in a way that the depth (i.e. shorter side) of the column is perpendicular to the major axis of bending. In simple words, when a column is connected to beams, it is subjected to moments in addition to the axial load. That’s why the shorter side of the column should be aligned perpendicular to the major axis of bending. This way, we can get a larger moment of inertia which means a greater moment-resisting capacity.

Brother could you give your contact number or mail id. I have some doubts about Structural Engineer mastery course
Please I'm finding difficulties installing the app
Simple and easy concept which, many of my lecturers used to avoid answering this questions but after this explanation I felt easy. Thank u for teaching this
Glad to hear that
Me too
Simple concept...align the column along long wall...at intersection cancel out opposite length then consider it...we always increase depth instead of width because in column and beam with depth moment of inertia and section modulus both increases which decreases the bending stress in our structure...bending stress is M/Z so Z increases ratio decreases...Z= bd²/6 for rectangle shape...also Z = I/Y ...so more inertia more section modulus..more strength to structure...everything is interconnected. 👷
Sending love and Success to all the hardworking Engineers 👷♂️🔥
Sir u are great really💯
Your quality of teaching indeed it has to be appreciated👏🏻💯👍🏻
Thank you so much! 🙏
This is a beautiful and explicit presentation. Please something like this is needed on manual design of steel tank stand carrying 20,000gal. water tank.
Thanks
Blessing Chinda
Thnx for providing these type of usefull lectures...Really nyc🎉
excellent column positioning rule based on span of crossing beams & width & depth of column #❤️👍
Great explanation... such videos before it I will never see
Always you give us an important concept, thanks.
Very good clarification on orientation of columns Thank you
THank you for this useful information. Very helpful :)
Thank you for your nice lecture ❤
Very informative and useful video
...😊❤
thank you! helps a lot
Glad it helped!
Jazakallah khair azizil mudaris
Super video sir
Thanks...all dought cleared 👍
Great 👍
Thank youuu 😭😭 really helped me a lot
Sir can you please take online class Bar bending schedule
Thank you so much
Good informasiont
Very essential for me
How to decide correct size of Column within detail of steel bars? Kindly upload detail video
Thanks 🙏
super explanation.
Good explanation
Biggest thanks...
Very helpful
Amazing
Basically beams should be perpendicular to the max span of column
Thanks a lot sir
Hi sir, what if there is a beam (larger dimension) and other beam(smaller dimension)? it is still used the same way to determine it or the larger beam is always connected to the short side of the column
Here our beams are mostly 425x150 with the top of the beam being the thickness of the slab (125 mm.) The web part of the beam (height=300) is cast first to enable shuttering for the slab and the top part of the beam is cast together with the slab (=125mm). The slab is connected to the beam by its weight and by its reinforcement but they do not share a unified concrete cast. I will like to know how you consider the beam dimension in that case according to your code? Thanks.
Why don't you guys cast it all togeather which is the most appropriate way...🤔
According to IS 13920, shortest dimension of columns should not be less than 300 mm. So should we improvise it?
Only if you are doing Earthquake design.
hi, from Pakistan, can you do tutorials in ACI using UBC code in version 16 Etabs??
same request!
Sir in a building there is 12"*15" column size and 16mm 6 rods are provided, then what should be arrangement of rods in that column and why so.??
Nice question
Column size 230 * 230 means square ......but u show rectangular........for square column no need of orientation
Assalamualaikum sir.I want to buy the course from civil fields trainer. How to confirm and contact you before buying the course??
Check out the link in the description box
🙏🙏
can we do this course who are not student of engineer but have good knowledge nd interested ??????
Please which application software do you use to make your videos?
Kinemaster
