How to make your own FONT! (Easy FREE DIY Method)

  • This is how I made a font using vintage porcelain film letters. These letters were used in the days of 8mm and Super8 film, when you wanted to do in-camera titles. You can use MANY techniques to make your own font. This is the site I used to make my font:

I work with fonts every day at work. The sheer volume of them is overwhelming. I learned early on never ask a client what font they'd like to use -- with all the choices available, they'll get stuck in analysis paralysis and everything will take ten times as long. Instead, I ask clients what emotion they'd like their font to project. Happy, scary, sad, elegant, etc. After I find that, then it's just about finding a font that speaks to me in that way. Happy Craftin'!

I found the same issue as well. I don't even mention it because it takes forever to just to sift through 5k+ fonts on my system. The worst is trying to match an oddball font that someone brings on a low rez .jpg saying they don't or can't find the original art.

Hahaha years ago in the early 2000's a college professor wouldn't except a hand written outline for my upcoming paper because my handwriting was "terrible". He said it needed to be typed and printed. I spent days in the lab creating a font that mimicked my hand writing. He gave me an A for the assignment and some new "professional" font suggestions for the future. We are 2 peas in a pod Crafsman

Glad you enjoyed it! :D There or sure ARE artists out there making really precise fonts, spending considerable time on EACH letter, adjusting curves, making sure they line up all nice and elegant.

Oh Crafs.... you gotta fill those notebook pages up baby! Put some doodles on the paper. Don't let them go to waste!
Also Procreate has opened up SO many possibilities for artists like myself. To those who can't do an iPad price, but can get an iPhone, they also have an almost-perfect version for your handhelds too to use (and if you have a phone touch stylus similar to an Apple pencil with a fine tip you can draw on your screen too!)
I've got a few fonts I designed a decade plus ago. Now that there's a place I can take my hand-drawn ones and put somewhere digitally, that'll make it SO much easier.
Trouble is I've got like...30+ sketchbooks to go through now to find them. XD
Thank you sir! Keep the rain coming. We just need like a 3 hours of rain and your voice video to put us into a comfortable Rip Van Winkle sleep.

Hello crafsman, thank you for your videos! I have a severe disability. It affects a lot of my body and organs but the muscles are what relates to this message in particular. My muscles are so weak, I can't walk or even hold a pencil. I struggle to even use a phone but luckily I have some amazing tech that means I can use my wheelchair joystick as a mouse, or use my eye's gaze as a mouse if needed, tech is amazing! Anyway, back on topic - when I was younger I really loved hand writing letters to my loved ones. I obviously can't anymore. I can still text them, but it doesn't have the same personal touch. I'm so happy I found this video. I used a scan of my old writing to get a font of my handwriting. I can now use it to 'write' letters with my handwriting again. Every day it seems like I lose another ability but this gave me back one that I thought was gone forever, so I really can't thank you enough!
I've spent all night in pain unable to sleep, so I've kept myself entertained by your videos. I love your style, humour and creativity. You are my new favourite TH-cam channel! I'll never be able to do these crafts by myself, but I love watching you create things. I think I may try doing some of the easier projects like shrinkydinks with my little sister. She can be my hands, and I'll be the instructor! Thank you again, much love and stay crafty!

I enjoy your stuff crafsman. Something to clarify though. TYPESET and FONT. typeset is the actual design of the lettering, the shapes, sizes ,etc. FONT is the creation of the typeset using SOFTWARE. Typeset isn't covered in the US by copyright. FONT is very much protected by copyright. It's all about how the FINAL creation is done. If it is created and executed USING computer software..its a font.
Letraset is the original creator of dry transfer lettering. It opened up a whole wide world of creative possibilities for graphic designers.

Was really neat to see a bit of your set when it comes to filming, I'd watch an entire video on setting up cameras and lights.

I made my own font in the EARLY 80's it was bubbly. Fron 1988-1998 my career was centered around FONTS, many of you might have used my work. I was in publishing designing text books for Goodheart-Willcox, AutoCAD anyone? Then when the internet got popular I collected all the "free" fonts I could, somewhere is a CD of fonts.

What a great resource! And I can't imagine how much time it'll save for video work that uses things like stop motion animation titles.

Holy, crafsman, baby, I been lookin' to make fonts... Ahem. I've been looking for a way to create a few fonts for an RPG campaign. I tried some free font designers but the tools and documentation were too opaque for easy understanding. Thanks for the info on this cool site. Now I got to get steady craftin.
