The FN FAL is a semi-automatic weapon, unlocked at level 28.
The 'fusil automatique léger' or 'light automatic rifle' was designed in the wake of World War Two, by Belgian Based FN Herstal.
The first prototype was completed in 1947, and the FAL first entered production in 1953, where it saw widespread adoption in the armed forces of NATO member countries.
The FAL was originally intended to fire an intermediate cartridge - although this met with opposition from the US, who doubted the smaller calibre's lethality.
Eventually the 7.62 by 51 millimetre cartridge was adopted as the NATO standard and this would be the cartridge the FAL would fire upon its production.
This technically makes the FAL a battle rifle rather than an assault rifle - and thanks to its widespread adoption and usage, is regarded as a paradigm post-war battle rifle, often described as 'the right arm of the free world'.
In-game, the FAL is a high-damage, mid-recoil weapon - and is the only available semi-automatic weapon in the assault rifle category.
It deals the most damage per shot of all the assault rifles - the only real downside is that you have to pull the trigger for each shot.
On the plus side, this does make it easier to regulate your fire rate, so once you're familiar with the weapon you can adjust the rate of fire to suit the recoil and range of the engagement - at longer ranges you'll want to allow the sights to settle before firing again.
With practice, you'll be able to fire effectively on a target from close range out to quite some distance - although as a semi-auto weapon with a larger hipfire spread the FAL doesn't fare so well in close quarters.
For your blue perk, I preferred Sleight of Hand for an aggressive role with the FAL - if you prefer to take a more conservative approach then Bling can be used to pair the Holographic and Silencer for silent two-hit kills across the map - a potent combination for counter-sniper usage.
If you're using the Holographic, Stopping Power is very useful as otherwise you'll have to hit your targets three times at long range, but otherwise I found Lightweight Pro to be a solid choice for the FAL without the holographic.
The increase in mobility means that you can often get to places where the enemy won't expect you - and even without stopping power you'll be able to kill in two shots up close.
Paired with Sleight of Hand it's a very nimble setup.
You can also make good use of the flexibility in red perk to try a lesser-used configuration - cold blooded is viable for a stealth class, and hardline and danger close both have their benefits too.
For your third perk, Ninja Pro is definitely the best choice for an aggressive setup, otherwise you might prefer something like Commando to improve your close-range ability - rounding out the FAL's ability at middle to long range.
The FAL is a high-damage weapon, and can be effectively used without Stopping Power in some configurations.
It's surprisingly effective in an aggressive role when paired with Lightweight and Sleight of Hand, and can be used to bullrush enemies and quickly despatch them.
The unique benefit of the holographic sight, and the potential for two hit kills at all ranges, make this weapon worth using at long range too.
I'd recommend a decent close-range secondary - a shotgun or machine pistol would serve you well. Other than that, the FAL will be more than effective out from middle range.
It's a powerhouse with the holographic sight attached, and a versatile weapon, suiting a diverse range of loadouts, without.
It's not a weapon for everybody, but if your trigger finger's up to the task the FAL might just be the weapon for you.
The FAL is one of the few weapons in CoD history that has 3 quirks:
- Holo adds 5 bonus minimal damage
- Red Dot is misaligned
- FAL turns Masterkey to a sniper, unlike the other Assault Rifles

The Masterkey one is a myth, The masterkey has a ridiculously long range by default, the FAL does not effect it in any way.
It sounds weird but when you go see how weapons files know you'll know a single misplaced number is enough

I always loved the reload animation on the FAL.
KnownUnknown little late now but you can do this irl with any gun that has a paddle magazine release provided you can fit the mag between the trigger guard and mag release

Back in the days before every gun had to have the flick animation or "tactical mag retention" animation..
One of my favorite assault rifles in MW2. The shotgun attachment was really powerful in Hardcore because, for some reason, its range was about the same as the FAL.
Always loved single fire weapons in cod. Had fun with the FAL but the G3 from cod is my all time favorite gun.

The design that emerged just after WWII was in a very different form in a much lighter calibre. It changed many times from 7.92x33mm to .280 British then finally to .308/7.62x51mm over the next decade. It was a confused history of many different nation's national defence plans trying to synchronise.

I honestly was using the m21 ebr with acog until I realised that I could just replace it with the fal acog and get rod of the idle sway. Seriously though. The idle sway is the only thing making this different from the m21. Both are semi auto lasers.

The holographic sight gives the FAL a higher damage since a purchase of a FN FAL scope mount and holographic sight would grant a free box of explosive .308 winchester bullets...

Try the Steam version if you get the chance. There is virtually no hackers at all on there, plus a lot of fun custom servers are on there as well.

@UnderGroundRacer19 You don't need FMJ, or the holographic - the FAL can kill with one headshot at close range if you use Stopping Power.
I always use Holographic with FAL, its always been my favorite weapon.
This is quite literally the best gun in the campaign. It has high damage, low recoil, and is very good when spammed from the hip in close range.
By far, my favorite gun in all of the CoD games. I was so good and quick with shooting it, people used to say I was using a turbo trigger in the post game lobby. It kind of made me feel special. lol
The semi auto BRs are always my favourite gun. In CoD4, M14 was my favourite, in W@W, SVT40 and Garand were my favourite, and FAL is my fav in this.
this is not only my favorite weapon in MW2 but it's the Beat Battle Rifle ever
Loved this gun, with Bling, SP and the Holographic Sight you could have a silent gun that has unlimited 2-shot kill range. Excellent for assaulting while being a very effective counter-sniper. Edit: Just finished the video and Ahoy said the exact same thing lol!

@bopcr Assault rifles don't fire full-size rifle cartridges - they fire intermediate cartridges.
@laallaal75 I can appreciate a difference in approach to the weapon, but when the holographic is correctly aligned and adds damage to the FAL, to use the red dot is foolish :)

Activision started firing people from infinity ward (now the company working on Titanfall) before the game came out I think. which means they didn't have time to test or fix anything.

Some of the advantages of the FAL @XboxAhoy didn't mention:
1.The heartbeat sensor is one of few that remains in clear vision when you're ADS
2. Equipping Bling and have a Shotgun and silencer makes the the shots from the Shotgun invisible on the radar as well, though i'm not sure if that's been patched now or not...

well i just added a reflex sight and i got tons of one shot kills even at distance but the sound of it makes me laugh everytime a g3 irl scares the shit out of poeple but in the game it was like pop pop haha

aki40ff With holographic sight it does slightly more damage enough so that with stopping power it kills in two-hits at all ranges and will kill in one headshot across most sightlines. Very good.

It's just my preference, I definitely prefere the fal in black ops games, the FAL in Bo1 is great, the fal in bo2 is OP as. Iron sights are a little cleaner and the gun rewards people with great trigger fingers

Very nice gun, reliable and accurate. Though it takes a small bit of time to unlock it, using it afterwards truly benefits your gameplay experience. It reminds me a lot of the g3 gun!
So glad they got rid of Stopping Power in later CoDs. Talk about a crutch perk.

Well it kind of balanced with Jugg in cod4 and waw. In mw2 it was a decent perk. You chose bullet damage, stealth, explosive damage, or faster mobility. So the main choices are in the red perks which made it harder to choose really.

In CoD WaW, I reload my sniper after every shit and also in in other games.

The FAL Bling using the Holographic + Silencer with the G18 Akimbo + Silenced along with Stopping Power and Ninja has to be one of my favourite set ups. Extremely effective at all ranges without giving your position away (bar UAV's).

I loved the FAL on MW2, it's a shame it didn't make it to MW3, I've found myself becoming obsessed with the Dragunov and not the Mk14. I love the semi autos but the FAL was the king!
I think semi-auto and burst rifles are a better choice for my play-style. Another brilliant guide.

@bopcr Smg's typically used pistol cartridges or low power cartridges (9mm, 45.ACP, etc) , Assault rifles use intermediate cartridges designed for medium range and sustained fire with minimal recoil (5.56x45mm, .223, 7.62x39 are typical sizes), and Battle rifles use full-power rifle rounds (7.62x51mm, .308 are the typical sizes)

I loved pairing this with the heartbeat sensor. Even looking down the sights, you can see basically the entire sensor screen.
Using this weapon in MW2 helped me get so many AC130s that's how powerful it was.
I love this gun. In my opinion the best assault rifle in MW2. Maybe not good for long killstreaks like the SCAR or RPD, but its just pure fun to play with this thing.

The FAL is crazy good when you bling it with a holo and Silencer. got a triple spray with this setup for the final killcam minutes ago, I recommend everyone trying it :)

@XboxAhoy I never realized you replied. I think now you were right. I used the holo for a bit and though damage boost was not a major factor, target acquisition was, and once I got used to the sight, I found it easier to hit longer ranges.
I still don't think you give enough credit to the red dot, but either way t'was nice talkin.
And by the way, I can't wait for your reviews of the M14 and FAL in Black Ops, I really don't know which I like better.

It means Full Metal Jacket, which is a metal coating over the bullet so it can shoot through things better.

FAL w/ Holographic Sight, w/ Marathon, Cold Blooded, and Ninja. The Holographic can take place of Stopping Power. Which is like a four perk set up instead of the usual three.
stopping power wasn't the only red perk commonly used in MW2, people also abuse lightweight, danger close, and cold blooded just as much
I cant wait to unlock this. I love the squeakers saying that i have a modded controller althogh i dont and i have an awsome trigger finger.

I didn't know that there is a DLC-pack with a map from CoD4/CoD MW1.
It's a small but very 'fun-to-play' map.
I enjoy it.
Bling silencer/holographic is beast on this thing.
I'm playing mostly HC and using FAL instead of a sniper rifle. ACOG+Silencer / Cold/ Ninja. One of my favorite combinations in this game :D
@MrPuple10 Yes, in Hardcore, it's an OHK at any range. As well as the FAMAS, SCAR-H, TAR-21, AK-47, UMP45, L86 LSW, RPD, MG4, AUG HBAR, M240, Barrett .50cal, Intervention, WA2000, M21 EBR, and M93 Raffica.
