These videos are the gold standard for reviewing adventure games. Glad i went searching for broken sword videos. I hope your channel picks up steam and you keep making videos.
Absolutely love this game, despite it being a departure from the originals (which are of course superior!) I've always been intrigued by the weird coincidence that Tomb Raider AOD came out the same year and the two games seemed to borrow gameplay elements from each other. Broken Sword became more like Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider became more like Broken Sword. xD
Nice review, quite in depth; the end baffled me too. Clearly there were portions of the game left on the editing floor. Also, I played this game back in the day, when it came out, so no amount of negative reviews were able to deter me not to play the 3rd part of one of my favorite games ever. Looking out for your reviews on BS 4 and 5. Cheers!
i dont mean to be offtopic but does someone know a trick to get back into an instagram account?? I was stupid lost the login password. I appreciate any tricks you can offer me.
@Julian Amir Thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and im in the hacking process now. Seems to take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Really thorough review. I've got this game in my GOG library, even had a copy for the original Xbox. Could never bring myself to play beyond the first Parisian area, so this review was fan service. Looking forward to a BS4 review, another game I own but cannot bring myself to endure. Sadly the in-game walkthrough in BS5 proved too tempting, but at least I played that one through. It'll be interesting to hear your thoughts on that one too. I'll lookout for your other game reviews, had to stay up an hour later as was looking forward to this. Well worth it
I'm so glad you liked it. I was trying something new with this one, and was worried that it didn't work well. If all goes well, my review of BS4 will be on the 11th of April, and the BS5 review will be on the 11th of May. I will be uploading other reviews in between, but they will be of other games.
Great video! When I first played this I guessed what the ending would be due to an old English folk story of Saint George defeating a dragon, still don't know where King Arthur came from tho lol.
I love this game, despite its obvious flaws. I love your critical views. How you highlight what's wrong with a game, yet not afraid to admit the things that are genuinely good. Great video!
That's so nice of you to say. Thank you so much. And yeah, I try to be as fair with my critiques as possible. Trust me, I don't find any joy in just bashing a game for no reason. I went into this one thinking I was gonna love it.
Having played 1 and 2 i bought this when it came out but i just couldn't get into it because it was just too different, it just didn't feel like Broken Sword. I never played the 4th one either for the same reasons. When i saw they had returned to the original art style for Broken Sword 5 i was super hyped and couldn't wait to play it. Playing 5 brought back so much nostalgia from the first two games it made me feel like a kid again experiencing the game for the first time, it was awesome.
15:20 i remember thinking the same, he gets lucky so many times. also how dumb is petra she never brings enough bullets or the gun jams, she's supposed to be a professional
Thank you so much for your kind words. I'm excited to know your opinion on the other Broken Sword videos, because honestly, this one is my least favorite of my videos.
When I look at this game in comparison to Broken Sword 4 and 5, I think it's closer to the essence of the series. Yes, the gameplay and how it resulted in a weird 3D game and the story are bad. However the aesthetics and George and Nico's character and dynamic (btw I love their casual outfits and how both have booty) are for the most part gorgeous. Yet I have to admit that the last time I played this game I deleted it and just had another great time with the first game. This game has a little soft spot for me because of nostalgia and because I really dislike 4 and 5. And Petra is slaying
I don't mind the 3D at all. And I like the blinking for hints to click on. I don't luke the constant box moving and the way too frequent dying, because I failed the sneak check, because reaction time lag is bad.
I actually love this game a especially if you play with a controller, you can see where the influence was for Nathan Drake's Uncharted, it copied a lot from this game
With the game mentioning Egypt and China I think having China be the final area you have to go to face the final boss would've made more sense than England
The "key in the keyhole" puzzle is a copy from the old amstrad game "le passager du temps" (litteraly the first enign of thé game). I remember doing it in 5 seconds, thinking "is this going to be lazzy like this all the game?". I stopped playing at a moment with crates and bad infiltration 😣
Excellent review! (quite a documentary could say) I don't bother with spoilers, actually, I liked them because I was curious about the story and tried playing this game myself but dropped it quickly... couldn't bear with the gameplay style and watching a long-play is not that much immersive, specially with all those boxes dragging around xD so this review was perfect for it!
I'm so glad my video was able to satisfy your curiosity about this game, and I'm glad you liked it. I just hope people understand how painful it was for me to go through the entire game... Twice. I never wanna see another box puzzle in my life ever again.
I really enjoyed your video 🙂 I recently decided to jump back into the third part, but both gog and steam versions won't accept resolutions other than the standard 800 x 600 😭 that's the thickest bars I've ever had on my 4k screen.
Is my 2nd favorite after the Shadow of the templars. It has so many scenes that I liked aswell as Petra and Susarro were interesting as antagonist for me, I liked the soundtrack aswell
Considering this was supposed to be the last game in the series, I get what they were going for with the ending. Sir George slaying a Dragon, just like St. George. Ties things back to Christianity and the Templars and all that. They just completely failed to set it up in any way.
I’ve been watching all the reviews, what’s your favourite adventure games? You say some of the broken sword games are too 10 but not 1 so I’m interested to play games you suggest. I love the broken sword games. Thanks for the reviews!
Thanks for your kind words. I will someday make a video of my top 10 point and click adventures, but I can easily say that Gabriel Knight 1, Beneath A Steel Sky, Monkey Island 2, and Day Of The Tentacle are up there for me.
I didn't mind the jump to 3D too much. The control system was atrocious in retrospect (and the ending really was bonkers), but I thought there was a comparable amount of care and attention put into the game (within the confines of its technology) as it had been the case with the originals. Now, with BS4... not so much.
I enjoyed this game but the 3D really lacked the uniqueness and charm of the first two games. The scriptwriting and dialogue was also vastly inferior, sometimes even downright terrible. I thought a lot of the gameplay was fun and the puzzles were good, but the controls themselves felt annoying and unpolished especially when running.
I played this game on the PS2 ...I was just happy there was another BS game to play . The stealth stuff I could get on board with , but the block puzzles ie shove left push up climb, push arrrggghhhh ... For me one of the best aspects of the the game was the interaction between the 2 main characters . The fairly flimsy guy the brave as nails girl and the will they , wont they get together . Call me an old fashioned romantic rooting for the odd couple , but that was what kept me playing . All that said , I really enjoyed this game until the ending .....Dragon ? Pah !
The writing was pretty solid, and I did really like both George and Nico in this game. And as you said, their interactions with each other were pretty great. Sadly, I just really didn't like the story, and the non-box puzzles were just not good enough to keep me interested.
It's quite funny to find your channel after binging BS 3-5 and thinking about playing all other Revolution games. Even funnier though is that I found third to be a more enjoyable experience than the second thanks to it's dialogs, not by much but still. Story and inventory hoarding do have problems indeed. I quite liked controls they tried (played with a gamepad, because it was clearly console oriented) as the game tried to keep up with times considering people were losing interest in point and click games and saying pixel hunting not being an enjoyable experience. Box puzzles are yikes that is true and they seem to be as inevitable in going to 3d from 2d as jigsaw puzzles are in 'remakes'. I didn't get why they made Lobineau brunette though. Good reviews anyway. And why do I always see Elon Musk on the cover?
Thank you so much. If you haven't yet, I suggest you check out my other Revolution Software reviews, especially In Cold Blood, since it was the first 3D game by them. And I get what you mean about the controls, since In Cold Blood had the same issue. The controls on PC were horrible, yet they were slightly better on PS1 (slightly), so it could be the case with this one as well. I'll check out the console version when I get the chance, however, I don't understand why they didn't include controller support. Same with In Cold Blood, the PC version can ONLY be played with a keyboard. Also, yes, the guy on the front cover really looks like Elon Musk. Now I feel bad for not making that joke in my video lol
@@FairuzAlBahr yeah, I watched videos of the games i played or tried, "In Cold Blood" is the only left to play (I exclude Gold and Glory: The Road to El Dorado from the list, it seems like too much)
I’ve played 4 out of 5 of the games. (3 versions of the 1st). Didn’t play 4. I enjoyed each of them for different reasons. My biggest complaint of 3 was (for me) the Xbox had so many long load screens.
Yeah, now I think about it this game felt like it was podged together from several ideas after multiple rewrites. That being said, the lucky piece of coal and Nicole pretending to be a murderous femme fatale was pretty good. They also were trying to make it more of an action adventure but kept defaulting to FUCKING CRATE PUZZLES.
Fair enough, the game has it's issues... same as BS 1 and 2, but overall i really loved the game, i think mainlly because of the continued story and the returning caracters from the first game!!😁❤️
Revsoft sure love their fan service and returning characters. I can definitely see why that would make one love the game, that's valid. It just didn't do it for me.
It wasn't a horrible jump. This is the 21st century, all mainstream games have been in 3D since the late 1990s. This one and the next looked FAR better as a result.
I think you should watch the video, because I wasn't referring to how the game looks. In fact, I said in the video that it looks pretty good all things considered. I was talking about the gameplay.
Weird. Thhis dialogue you showed at 26:10 was so bad I honestly don't know how can you say BS2 had worse, when it didn't have a single one as bad as this one. And that "Susan" bit... my god. What a nonsensical and pointless piece of dialogue.
In my defense, I showed the "Susan" part as an example of bad voice acting. As for the dialogue I pointed out, I don't know. I think we will agree to disagree, because honestly, I thought it was quite good. I do agree, however, that I might have been a bit too harsh on Broken Sword 2's writing.
These videos are the gold standard for reviewing adventure games. Glad i went searching for broken sword videos. I hope your channel picks up steam and you keep making videos.

@@FairuzAlBahr So, what's your final says.. is the game good or not?
I actually sent Revolution an email about the in-game hints system (I didn't like it). It felt like a cheat code you couldn't turn off.

"if you are a perfectionist and want to play every game in the series......." Yup thats me right here , *hand up*
It is a shame that this game did not have good gameplay, because the story is fantastic!

I never got to use the lucky piece of coal. 😢
Man, i forgot that campy Accent of Nico in the English Dub....
I think it's a nod to the Saint George and the Dragon and that his bloodline or something goes back to king authur
Not all Puzzles were telegraphed. Some made zero sense..You literally had to be a genius to figure out the order of the wine bottles to open the door.
