Finding the light in Watercolor - The way to light is with some DARK!

  • Are your paintings looking too dull? Finding the light is very important in watercolour to achieve atmosphere, a range of contrasting values and the feeling of a scene. Watch me paint this French street scene in a loose way and see how to achieve more light and atmosphere in your watercolour paintings.
At the start of this video, I show my source photograph for the painting. If you want to keep referring to this during the video, then copy the URL of the video into another browser Tab or Window on your device. Run the video again, but of course pause it at the start where I show the source photo. In Chrome, you can also right-click on the tab and select ‘Duplicate’.

In this demo I will be covering...
    1) Choice of Subject. What makes a good watercolor subject. How to simplify the scene.
    2) Materials I use such as the paper. I will also cover the paints I use and the palette, plus how I hold the different brushes for different techniques.
    3) Doing the outline sketch as the first step. Getting perspective right in a street scene. Where is the light coming from?
    4) Doing the sky and the first wash of the background and then the foreground.
    5) Shadows and details of the cars, and figures and windows.
    6) The importance of values in a painting to achieve the feeling of light
    Timeline:
0:02:16 - Start of the outline drawing
0:08:17 - Laying down the first wash
0:13:47 - Start of putting in the darker values
0:26:20 - Start of painting in details

Just wanted to let you know that I have learned more from your watercolor instruction than the entire time I have been painting with it. I switched from oil to watercolor, and seriously have been working to advance. Thank you!!

Thank you Tim. As always, the photo takes me by surprise in its 'ordinariness ' but then you make it into a painting full of light and with a story to tell. A lesson to us all.
