Thank you, Maarten, I've been really curious about this device for several months. As a side hustle, I'd been an event videographer for a couple of decades and worked with a variety of switchers. It is absolutely remarkable what you can get for so little with this device! It's unfortunately it doesn't have balanced mic inputs, but the largest drawback, by far, appears to be the volatile memory in the device. That truly limits its value. It can't be used to prepare graphics in advance for, say, a high school talent show, and even if you were in a static setting with it, unless you had it hooked to a UPS, your entire live production could be at risk of a power blip. I need to look at the pro version. Do you think you'll have reason to review that one? Thanks for the excellent review. It had exactly the right level of depth. À bientôt!

Such a smooth demo! Do you wish it output in 4K? I know the Pro does, but did you find yourself missing the 4K when you were learning this unit? Ok, I’ll ask the question another way... could you see yourself using a switcher like this to record video live (not streaming) instead of mixing your sources in post production, to save time?
Thanks for your kind words. I didn't miss 4K output, for live streams it requires too much bandwidth. I don't really see much need for it for my reviews - that's too many tasks at one time.

Great value as always in your videos Maarten. I wish you'd showed how to connect other sources into the HDMI inputs. I own a Mini Pro and I cannot for the world get my iPad to show. I connect it to Input 4, I have a USB-C hub with both power cable for the iPad and a HDMI port, it's just a black screen when I switch to that input, The cameras connected work fine, PiP OK, but no matter where I connect the iPAd, it's a black screen.. Thanks!
It's not really possible to predict all of the issues, or to provide a consistent way to resolve them, and I do hear your pain as I have a camera that won't connect. My iPad, using a simple adapter with both HDMI and lightning, doesn't have any issues. Here's some trouble shooting advice: Does the iPad connect to a TV or other display with HDMI input? Do you have another (simpler) cable from the iPad to HDMI?
@@MaartenHeilbron Thanks for taking the time. The iPad shows nicely when connected to a TV or computer monitor (a large 34" LG) but not in the Atem's Inputs. I'm doing a research now and a friend suggested to use Input1 on the Atem because it's "special" compared to the rest of the inputs. This is true when I'm using a 5m HDMI cable from the camera, in order to place it further away. This works only in the Input1... So no signal from the iPad no matter. Another friend suggested getting Apple's original HDMI dongle and I could get that, but why spending 100+ USD for advanced USB-C dongles if they cannot provide HDMI, or is Apple doing something to prevent it?
@@HomesickMac Hmmm. The cable I'm using is not an Apple cable. As far as I know the only thing special about input 1 is that it's the driver for the output settings unless you're controlling it with the desktop app.
@@MaartenHeilbron Oh, I was referring to Apple's own HDMI adapter instead of using USB-C hubs as I've got (one is Satechi...), that's what people say works 100%. I've also got a Twelve South USB-C hub but that's behind the desk housing all connections for my MacBook Pro.... I might test it when I'm done with my weekend course, that was the idea in the first place, to connect the iPad to the Input 4 on the Atem...
Great video and very helpful. Any shortcuts to advance still pictures in the Media Player on the fly. I tried a live TH-cam presentation switching from a video of myself presenting and switching to the picture queued up in the Media Player. Works great until you want to move to the next picture. You have to then queue up the next picture. Not easy to do when you're making a presentation. Any tips??
Agreed. Am struggling with this myself as I prepare a second set of tips. Although I haven't yet tried it, the elgato stream deck (it's available as an iPhone app and as hardware) might provide a solution. Macros (although they're a challenge to setup properly might also simplify.

Hello, thank you for the great video. We have identified a challenge with the Atem Mini and though the threads touch on it i would like for you to address it into more details. We realized that the Mini's hdmi output is not identified by atomos Ninja 2. So you cant record to that device from the atem mini. Could it be because of the mp4 output from the mini versus the Prores input by the Ninja as i read on the threads. Tried a splitter to break any handshake issue and still didnt work out. Thanks for the kind words. I don't have a Ninja 2, but it works fine with my Ninja Inferno and Ninja 5. Does the HDMI output from your mini display on other devices, like a TV set? Have you tried a different cable?
@@MaartenHeilbron Yes it displays on a monitor and guess what before the hdmi gets to the atem mini it displays when connected to the ninja. But wont display when outputted to the ninja from atem mini out. i wonder if it has any link with resolution size etc. Will keep you posted.

Good video thank you. I'm struggling at times to get my GoPro 8's to register thru the Mini all the time. And using a 30 meter HDMI cable with built in amplifier? Forget it! Just does not get any signal thru to the mini. Is there a work-around? Will the Pro be better?
I appreciate your kind words. Haven't tried GoPro, so can't suggest. I maxed at 10m, but one Sony camera wouldn't cooperate with that. I doubt the pro has any better performance for that, but haven't tried, so
@@MaartenHeilbron Actually I boned the connection up lol! The amplified HDMI cable I used is directional (shocking lol) so around the right way, and fully coiled up I got signal straight away! So 30 meters works just fine, but the cable is expensive.
For using a mirrorless/DSLR camera in 1080p mode at 30fps to do Zoom conferences: Do you know how the video quality of the Blackmagic ATEM Mini compares to the Magewell Capture HDMI Gen 12 and/or the Elgato Cam Link? If I want to minimize latency, am I better off getting an internal computer card like the Magewell Pro Capture HDMI Card? I heard complaints about certain capture cards that use some form of jpeg compression that reduces the video image quality. Does that really matter? Does a device using USB 2.0 vs USB 3.0 make any difference in latency? (I know the Blackmagic ATEM Mini is a switcher with extra features, but at this temporary point, I'm just trying to understand differences in latency and video quality for each device using 1 mirrorless/DSLR camera.) Thanks.
Can you show some things that go wrong and explain the solutions. ie... cheap camera 📸 that doesn’t work, capture card, beginning errors from watching other TH-cam videos

I.e. how much more functionality, quality etc. do we get for how much more money? I know, a lot of it I could find out myself, but it’s just so much better to hear you talk about it.

A Sony A6300.
I am not familiar with those devices, so can’t really advise.
With the ATEM Mini Pro, one can stream directly from the device itself to TH-cam, et. al. Were you unable to obtain the Pro model for your review?
I purchased the Atem mini, as that's all I need. I'm streaming to TH-cam directly from the mini. The pro has advantages, that's not one.
Can you show some things that go wrong and explain the solutions. ie... cheap camera 📸 that doesn’t work, capture card, beginning errors from watching other TH-cam videos
Interesting suggestion. Let me collect up some and see if that works as a subject.
brilliant
Thanks for the kind word.
Hi Maarten. Great video, thanks. I’d appreciate more Atem Mini coverage please! Separately, is that dual woofer speaker in the back ground a Paradigm perhaps?
Thanks for your kind words. While this video isn't generating a lot of plays, there are multiple requests for another post. I'll document some of my experimentation in an upcoming video.
Thanks for once again making me thirsty. It looks quite impressive.
But then why SHOULD you - in their opinion - have bought the PRO?
In other words I’m curious to know how much more.
I.e. how much more functionality, quality etc. do we get for how much more money?
I know, a lot of it I could find out myself, but it’s just so much better to hear you talk about it.
Thanks, always nice to know that I'm raising some level of awareness of interesting products.
There seems to be some interest in doing a video about upstream and downstream keys, so I'll see if I can include the pro details.
how can I power the mini via a battery?
I don't know.
Can you address the computer input?
Can you be a little more detailed? What are you hoping to learn?
Maarten Heilbron how will I be able to display computer content?
@@gregjonesdfw Just connect it to one of the HDMI inputs.
