What another fantastic open by starting us in where ground zero basically happened. Just awesome to see in the insight they gave us there and the decision she had to make. And now we get to meet the "host" which are next level! Joel didn't do him or Ellie any favors there by activating all those host. And poor Tess. What a scene that was with her at the end there. Such a good episode 2 by the Last of Us.

Holding my breath thru out this episode. The visuals in this is truly amazing.
Speaking of the hive mind, we seen that in Stranger Things. I'm loving that element of it.

The little details of Tess holding her shoulders practically to her ears when they're on the roof, the blood on her jacket, the flinches as she moves... 11/10 man
There's also a point where she's walking in front, and you can catch a super quick glimpse of the wound on her shoulder as she looks behind her. Easy to miss but such good detail
As someone who played the game and is one of my all time favorites, I have to say, the detail in this is so amazing. In the game, it's common for Ellie to snoop around areas of a room and say things, like jokes or observations, questions about Joel's past. The fact that they are keeping that little curiosity bug Ellie has and the banter you get while playing the game, shows me the people making this show really care a lot.
It sure helps having the games creator as one of the executive producers, showrunner and also director of this episode.
The only thing I can say that I hope changes a little next episode, is Joel isnt as annoyed by Ellie's presence like he is in the games. Like right now he seems annoyed cause he has to go out of his way for this mission, which is her. But in the games he basically doesnt like Ellie at all. I only say this cause its makes it so much better for character development
its like youre in the game with everyone, it never felt so real, shout out to everyone who was involved in this production, its just soo good
The woman in the beginning saying “bomb” was so surreal to me, could you imagine the feeling in that room, how that general felt hearing this official say your only hope is wiping cities from the face of the earth
I can't believe they managed to make Tess's death so much sadder than it was in the game. This episode was so GOOD 🤯

@@aniwayassong6183 it wasn't a kiss. It was a bit weird, sure, but it was supposed to be. That's how the Infected latch on their victims brain, and since tess was already infected the fungus manipulated her to let it happen. Grandma was doing the same thing in episode 1

Infected noticed her, noticed she was infected, and wanted to "help" speed up the process as the infected only care about spreading their fungal shit to everything. Since the tendrils are in teh mouth, it was transferred through the mouth, as a "kiss"

Its interesting that they made flour probably the main source for how the virus spread. If you go back to episode one you’ll remember they couldnt eat the pancakes because they didn’t have flour, the neighbors had biscuits and cookies which sarah didnt eat because of the raisins, and joel forgetting the cake. All that likely prevented them from becoming infected.
There was a bit of sadness in the video game, for me but, it’s something different when it’s actual human people playing these characters. Heart broken for Tess. Loving this series you guys❤
I wasnt attached to her in the game but in the show it was more sad to me too
I think another aspect of it is that in the game, her sacrifice didn't really stall the humans much. You end up fighting a bunch of them anyway. In this version she sacrifices herself to stop an entire horde. Her death has a much more significant purpose and her last words mean that much more to the story going forward. "Save who you can save"
The clickers were absolutely horrifying and perfect! The detail of the mushroom blooming from the head to the clicking noises to echolocate is just amazing. Plus that opening scene wonderfully set the tone of dread for the rest of the episode. I understand the frustration at not getting the grenades but an explosion of that scale would probably alert a lot of the hidden infected in the city so maybe it’s better this way. Great reaction from you guys though and RIP Tess!

From what I understand, the fungus controls your actions, so as Tess was going down, she literally couldn’t move away from Fungus Face, but managed to keep flicking that lighter til it caught.
Yeah I agree on that and also feel like the infected kind of felt that she was already infected and kind of just "embraced" her with that kiss... Ugh makes my skin crawl

Yeah because for the cordyceps to thrive it needs its host to stay alive but slowly take over the nervous system. Which is even scarier to think about how you're basically still alive while losing control of everything and will probably still be conscious through the early stages of the infection.
I think they could have had it light but her unable to drop it due to paralysis or takeover. The horror movie it won’t light was a bit much but I love Olivia Dunham so I guess I forgave it. What I can’t forgive is the full on make out with infected Bob! 🤮🤮

I was amazed at how the infected looked so close to the game! To answer Oak’s question, the fungus that takes over the brain actually grows to split the head and face open, causing it to grow outwardly, which is why it looks like a mushroom top. Cool stuff!
The show is grounded in realism… that’s what makes it so smart and special.

Remember, Tess was infected and the tendrils were starting to take hold. Starting to control her, control her mind and body. That is why she could not move well and also why the infected runner didn't run fast straight at her. He walked up to her. She couldn't move. They were drawn to each other. She was going to be connected with all of them through that runner and a funghis tendrils. She couldn't move her head out of the way. She only had enough brain power to try and light that lighter. I bet she couldn't even bend over to light the ground.
I love this; Diamond Dave being excited in silence (😲😃) knowing what is gonna happen, but at the same time surprised with the new stuff. Meanwhile, Oak and Mason totally new viewers to this amazing story (😧😬)

oh god, it’s really fun to see my favourite reactors reacting to the opening scene. christine hakim and yayu unru are veterans, seniors, acting coaches, and mentors for indonesian actors (christine hakim is like their mother (and the fans’ too!!)). they’ve done so much for indonesian cinema and we couldn’t help but to feel so happy for them and proud to see them star in a huge project like this! and of course, they did amazing!?
I love the opening scene! That was such an understated and perfectly acted scene - no drama, just prefect scene setting and cinematography, with the emphasis that there is no hope. I honestly want to see more about those guys!
The opening of this episode was just so powerful and I think very useful for those who haven't played the games to understand the depth of this infection. What just a great and brilliantly done episode. The attention to detail is just so amazing to see on screen. My favourite subtle east egg to the game was the crouching for Joel and Ellie against the museum artifacts. You spend so much time of the game crouching and moving away from enemies especially clickers. Just *chefs kiss*
Don’t forget the semi-crushed camera zoom shot of the giraffe plushie on the road😊
The doctor's resolute "Bomb" was so incredibly chilling. I loved that entire intro sequence.
How the outbreak in a flour company in Indonesia happened explains how the fungus was in the flour/yeast and the outbreak was different in the game which was a crop found in South America. Remember when Joel's daughter was trying to make pancakes and they were out of pancake mix but then you see their neighbors were feeding the old lady biscuits and cookies? What do pancakes, biscuits, and cookies have in common? THEY ALL HAVE FLOUR IN THEM. The fungus was planted in the food. That was the 💡 moment.
Someone told me why the infected doing the mouth to mouth thing with Tess actually makes sense from a biological standpoint as well, so here's what they said:
Biologically (and I do believe based on the intro scenes that the show runners have made their research) the transmission for the fungi indicates direct contact from the mycelium. Fun fact about fungi: it prefers humid and warm places to thrive. It makes sense to me from a biology standpoint that this hive-mind like creature would want to instantly connect an already infected Tess into them, and the easiest way to do it is through direct contact. The mucosae is the easiest point of entry for most organisms. I believe they made that change because of the visual...ickyness of the mycelium is easier to portray than the toxins

The beginning of that episode was sooo good. Instantly gave me goosebumps and made me tear up when you could see the hopelessness in that woman's eyes. Also with every episode I regret more and more that I had my doubts about the cast. Pedro Pascal and especially Bella Ramsey are outstanding here. The latter just delivers the sass of Ellie sooo good 😂👌The end hit me way harder in the game, tbh. That 'kiss' was suuuper weird and disgusting 😂 Also your reactions to the Clickers didn't disappoint! I was so excited when I heard their noises, like a child on christmas 😂 They act and look so good! And that they're all connected is amazing! Can't wait for the next episode. 10:08 Joel yanked his hand back after helping Ellie up because he remembered that she's technically infected, even though she isn't turning. He's been extra careful for 20 years to remain outside the reach of the infected-- later on, when he realized that Tess was infected, he stepped away from her quickly and kept his physical distance afterwards. Eventually, though, he let Tess close to him, right before she told him, "Save who you can save." His guard dropped in that moment with Tess because he does care for her, even if he wouldn't allow himself to love her back the way she loved him. In the hotel, Joel not hesitating to touch Ellie to help her up was an indication that he was beginning to care about her despite himself. The trauma of losing Sarah is still strong in him, but his shell is cracking.
The shows idea of fungi being connected through a thread like network underground really takes place in nature. The largest organism on Earth is a fungus in Oregon named Armillaria ostoyae. Most of it is the underground threads that connects clusters of surface level mushrooms to each other in an area that covers almost 3 1/2 miles.
I love watching your reactions to this, Diamond Dave especially, you can see he tries so hard not to spoil and let all his thoughts out at a million miles an hour and his expressions at key moments kill me 😂 I'm the same when I watch with people that don't know the story/game. I'm honestly still waiting to find something I don't like about this show, they've done an incredible job so far. Only complaints are the wait between episodes kills me and they aren't long enough, time just flies by!

Loving the various intros we're getting each episode and then going straight into the present day with our group.
The acting is of a world class level compared to most shows. Another one for me is the introduction of the hive mind instead of the spores which has been done brilliantly. Tess death in the games yes it was sad but again they've outdid themselves with this making you emotionally attached to these characters and then to just off them like that is incredible.
The clickers were amazing and the actors got the movements down to a tee.
Can't wait to see what the bloaters are like.

I love the subtle details of flour being the source of the Fungus. It really makes a bigger impact if you remember in the first episode they were feeding the old women biscuits and Joel was suppose to have pancakes but they didn't have any. I am a huge fan of the video game and I love the small differences they made for the TV series. They really kept the heart of the game intact and just expanded on it to make it more interesting.

This is why Ellie is so special, she is like a unicorn. No one could have every predicted she would exist so that's why the Professor said to scorch the city.
What an amazing episode! As always, love the reaction, fellas! I didn’t play the game - I only know the general premise, so everything is new and exciting to me, and overall, it’s been an amazing story and adaptation!
PS: The “knowing” look on Dave’s face when Ellie mentions the “ones with split open heads” and he knows he can’t say anything… awesome. 😂🤣

I'm loving how they're setting up a cure is impossible with the flashbacks. How Tess went out was terrifying compared to the game. Great reaction from you guys.
So far the show has shown 3 stages of Infected:
Stage 1: Runner (0 to 2-4 weeks) - These are the newly infected that still look mostly human.
Stage 2: Stalker (2-4 weeks to 1 year) - The fungus has started to grow out of the head, but they are still able to see and have some level of higher brain function. The one that 'kissed' Tess was a Stalker.
Stage 3: Clicker (1 year to 10-15 years) - The fungus has completed covered the brain causing the host to go blind, however they have developed a form of echolocation and hyper sensitive hearing to compensate.
Yet another confident & self-assured cold open! Have loved Anna Torv in Fringe, The Pacific, Mindhunter, The Newsreader and now TLOU - sad to lose her this early :(
Whew. 😮💨 The special effects and makeup are insane in this series ! I'm completely obsessed. The intro to this was also so good !

Am I the only one that yelled, "Joel throw a brick or bottle" at their tv when they were in the museum with the clickers??🤣🤣 The hotel with the water in it, the museum, the capital scene, the clickers.....OMGosh I love this show. I felt Tess's death was rushed, at least kill her off episode three. Her death hit me harder last night than it did in the game. The fungal kiss was disgusting but fantastic at the same time. I love the backstory in the first part with first victim. We're getting so much more information than the game gave us. I feel like I need to watch the show with a controller in my hand🎮🤣🤣.

Tess couldn't control her body at the end there. That's why she couldn't light the lighter. Her getting it to light was her literal last push at control.
Watched this episode with my friend last night and it was SO GOOD! As someone who has played the game and watched playthroughs I am constantly geeking out during this whole journey! And I love the changes/expansions on the world, characters, etc. The infected being a hive mind is PERFECT and makes it even scarier.
Yay, also it was stated in episode 1 that there are outside threats, like raiders and slavers etc
What I love about this and naughtydog's work in the game is how they made this environment like nothing else. Yes this is still a take on the zombie genre but it's so original. Just the look of the whole thing is so different I honestly can't think of anything that's like it.
I was right there with you guys, and I've played the game - when the doctor put her fingers in that woman's mouth, I was like NOOOOOO!!!!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Shoutout to Tess, she was a real one!!

This episode was incredible. The set design is crazy, some places look really like the game (thinking of the museum and the hotel). The tension was great, especially in the museum with the reveal of the clickers.
I think the series made a really good job with Tess' character. In the game she was a little "whatever" but I really liked Anna Torv's interpretation; there was more depth to the character and even though I knew it was coming, I felt really sad at the end when she dies.
I am so so excited to see next week episode. So far, this show blows up all my expectations.
I Love That The line Tess Mentions To Explain The Connection of the mycelial network basically parallels what Steve tells Eddie about The Mind Flayer "you step on a vine here your stepping on vecna somewhere else"

Love how they’re giving us a deeper look and understanding of the virus/fungus and also giving us more time to really know these characters from the game.
This show is amazing so far. In my opinion they not only adapt the game really good until this point, they add scenes and details to it that enhance the story even more without making it seem off place or disrespectful to the original story and I feel like that's not so common in TV adaptations. Love it so far, and can't wait for what is coming and how you guys like it!
The clicker scene was done so well. I feel like they were recreating my playthrough. When Joel just started firing at the clicker, that's me. I think he didn't go for the head initially and just started spraying the torso. I would have done the same thing if a clicker ran at me. Then got the second one, he actually took the time to aim for perfect headshots.
The infected look exactly like they do in the game. The clickers are even more terrifying when playing the game.

They did a great job of establishing the threat infected pose.
So far we’ve see that Tess and Joel are formidable people. Tess was being held captive by four people but still seemed like she was in charge. Joel killed an armed guard with his bare hands.
But as soon as they thought there might be live infected in that museum you could see and hear their fear (especially Tess)

Great reaction to a great show. A bit of trivia in 2003 the population of Jakarta was 8,700,000. Being in Asia you can confidently round that up to around 10,000,000.
the second joel takes ellie and rans, the expression of, "oh, im about to die" on tess' face, when she exhales. oh man, talk about not being able to put urself in her shoes. i get shivers every time.
Great episode! I love how they tell us little details about this fungus, like how you can wake up infected by stepping on that stuff. Tess didn't want to rile the infected up and chance losing the lighter in a fight. So she stood still and endured that super gross "parasite kiss"!🤮 Big Salute to Tess!!!
The clickers look soooooo good. Definitely did them justice. Honestly, the way Tess died in this episode, while widely different then the game hits me in the feels way more in this show then the game. She’s a bad@ss.
This episode was really special for me cause they filmed a ton in my home city and our neighbouring city. Many of the city shots are a mix of Edmonton and Calgary and the state building (which is called the legislature) is from Edmonton and I have been there many times over the years. It’s so cool to finally see my hometown on the map and in a high budget show
Edit: 16:48 is an exact street that I’ve walked down quite a few times just with the over growth, so it’s super cool to see.
I wish they showed more backstory with the relationship between Joel and Tess. Even the game didn't explore that much.

So for me, I've never played the game. Never even seen what the game was like. I started watching this with no knowledge of any of the characters. And I have never been this hooked into the beginning of a show. The first two episodes since October 31st 2010 when the walking dead premiered. And I'm already liking this more. I love how things are overgrown and it shows what truly would happen with everything after 20 years of nothing being maintained. Love it! Love it! Love it!

These games were visually gorgeous, and I thought the set/visual dept had their work cut out for them, but they really stepped up.
The old scientist was fantastic. Knew Tess death was coming, still sad, but she went like a badass. Ellie is perfect, I'm imagining her sassing Mando 😆. Need shotguns for "zombies", always. I want a cross with Avatar where the fungus infects Pandora. Would you rather Joel find Grogu or Mando escort Ellie? Lol

The character Tess, the actor Anna Torv, is in a fantastic sci-fi show called Fringe. She was so bad @ss as agent Dunham.

What you are seeing on the clickers head is NOT their brain, it's fungal plates. Those fungal plates act like armor to protect itself, and because of that armor a headshot wont necessarily kill them.

Tess was being taken over by the cordyceps which was why she didn't resist the one that was kissing her. It's why her attempts with the lighter got slower and slower, she lit it with the very last bit of her humanity before she was totally gone.

Good on you guys for not watching next week teasers. I do the same thing although next week's episode according to some of the critics who've already seen it have said it's one of the best episodes of television they've ever seen
remember, the fungus takes control of your brain. we have no idea what tess thought she was looking at when she smooched that fungi boy. her last act in her own body was probably to light that lighter.
