  • Are iPhones waterproof? A few years ago companies like Apple started advertising their phones as being "water resistant." They also started including an "IP rating" in many of their devices' specifications. But what does any of that actually mean, and most importantly, can you trust your phone in the water?

Japanese has a very neat culture to take bath and onsen/furo daily, and it's natural to use phones during that time when we enter the smartphone era. That's why Japan devolop not only water-resistant but also wet-usable touch screen for thier market.

In Sony Xperia commercials it was heavily advertised as " waterproof " and every ad showed the Xperia phone under water in lakes and pools all the time, these ads span from 2013 to 2015. Sony later dropped those ads as it was misleading, because many owners used the phones without reaching the 1.5m limit and the Xperia phones' display would stop turning on and eventually just vibrate continuously until the battery runs out. Now they just advertise it as " water resistant " able to survive a rain, not a swim in the pool anymore.

The home button is not an actual button, it’s capacitive. This means that when you press it, sensors on the button detect it and the phone makes a short (1 millisecond) vibration to simulate a click. The button is actually a just a flat surface without any holes. (To test it, try pressing it with another solid object: it won’t work).

My IP67 Google Pixel 2 XL had been doing great for a few times when quickly submerged into water for a short period of time, then I realized the lens got fogged, but it went away very quickly, so I thought it was normal. Last week, one year after I brought the phone, when I accidentally submerged it into water for a few second, the camera stopped working, the phone started heating up. I shut it down ASAP but it’s already too late... This video needs more attentions.

I had my iphone X for more than 6 months and I always wash it with water to clean it or take a picture underwater with it and I've never experienced any damages to the phone except for the first maybe 10 minutes the microphone or speaker don't give great sound but as soon as the phone gets dry everything is normal again .

Reminds me of Xperia Z. My friends with Galaxy S4 and IP5 would test it by submerging it into a jug of water. For the first 2 years of use I would wash it in basin whenever it got dirty. The thing still works today after 6 years but not water resistant anymore because the seals of flaps are worn out.

I got 2 ipad minis destroyed around 2013s because the first one was bitten by my puppy dog and the other one got soaked in the flood when we had a bad typhoon. Both got destroyed because of the water damage. Then back in 2016, my iphone 6s which is still has mediocre IP rating got soaked during a rainy trail run in the mountains and it shut down. Thank God it still worked after soaking it in rice. With my 8 and iphone pro max, I never had these issues since then that I can bring them in rainy runs or even swimming. Still thankful whoever started this waterproofing for phones and gadgets. They are a lifesaver from spending a fortune

Water resistance has saved me recently. At work I was doing dishes and accidentally dropped my phone into a sink full of dirty soapy water (this phone is an S8+ that is now over a year old). Of course I fished it out as quickly I could, but it was completely submerged for 10 seconds, and my music didnt even stop playing and I have had no issues since.
