Markus - I really enjoyed the documentary of your race. If you don't mind, I wanted to ask a few questions: 1. do you still have confidence in a dual rudder hydraulic steering system? 2. would you consider a different bow sprit design or doing away with it all together for this type of race condition? 3. what was the ingress point for your water accumulation under heavy seas? 4. where was that squeak coming from in the cockpit? 5. did you sail the boat back solo and do you plan to do the race again? thanks.

Hi Chris - let me answer your questions - 1. Yes, the hydraulic steering is in general awesome, our problem was, that the two rudders haven't been connected with a bar and where moving slightly different. In the meantime we installed together with the producer a bar and now the system is working perfect. In my opinion the big plus of the hydraulic steering is a.) the speed of movement (it's almost double as fast then an electric pilot) b.) it's powerful like hell c.) the power consumption is extremely low - disadvantage is that you have no feeling when you steering by hand.
      2. Bow sprit - no, the design was okay and is now slightly adapted with a better weld. The collapse of the bowsprit was caused by a bad weld of the bobstay. To be honest the bow sprit is not very necessary for that race, since 90 % is upwind sailing.
      3. The water was coming from the anchor locker, the drains have been blocked by fender lines so the locker was filled up with water completely, then was leaking trough a cable connection in the bulkhead into the cabin. However this is fixed in the meantime as well.
      4. The squeak is coming from the dodger - windows, this will stay for now but under normal conditions it's not really loud. We will investigate there when I'm back in Europe.
      5. I was sailing the boat (single handed) from Newport to Martinique a couple of days ago. Which was an awesome fast trip, we covered 2000 nm in 10 days. Now she is there and will be sailed over xmas and then in the Caribbean 600 race in February (in the double handed class).
Most probably I will do more races later on, but not again the Ostar, it's a brutal race in brutal conditions, all the boats suffered in massive way....but it was a dream of me to do that race once and I didn't regret it for one second.
Hope this is answering your questions ;-) Are you planning to participate in the next edition of the Ostar ?
      Cheers Markus

Thanks for really interesting daily updates. What sleep/watch regime do you try to follow?

I'm a bit lazy in that...normally I've tried (depending on the environment) at least to sleep once a day 3 hours in a row...but to be honest there have been a lot of like 45 minutes naps - and it's always a kind of sleep where you react instantly on a change of sound or heel or another change....
