  • Mr. Goodpliers visits a very old body shop in Halstead Kansas. The owner collected for decades so there was a huge amount of Resting Relics to comb through. Follow along and see International Harvesters, Dodge Power Wagons, and more items to pick. Watch to the end to see what Mr. Goodpliers brought home!

That is so sad. It reminds me of my Dad when he died and I had to auction off his life's work. People crawling through his things. It broke my heart and cut me to the bone to see the disrespect shown towards someone's life. I realized then the world stops for no man after he dies it just keeps on turning and slowly we lose an era and a way of life.

I'm late to this party! better late than never......... This was My Power Wagon,I Sold it to Mr. Schmitt back in 1983 for $700 dollars.
He came to my station in Hazelton ND after answering an add I posted in deals on wheels magazine. It was purchased new here in 1948 by a farmer. He actually plowed with it! The next owner was my wifes step grandpa, then the Standard oil dealer bought it for the gas station wrecker which came with the service station when I bought the business.
It had a top speed of 48mph, with tire chains it was damn near unstoppable.

The star of the show is got me to watch. I collect and restore Power Wagons in the condition this truck is in depending on the engine turning over and the trans and transfer case there is going to be some labor involved in getting it moving under its own power. What is generally assumed (by my experience anyway) is depending how long it sat without moving I have see where the differentials need all new bearing and not at all surprised if the ring and pinions are pitted or at least half of them. The trans and transfer case will need all new bearings and seals I am sure that engine has not had an easy life so your looking at an overhaul there and of course the clutch also. Full brakes including the master and all 4 wheel cylinders. The fuel lines and brake lines where all steel so your going to have rust both inside and out, deal with as fits. Get rid of that wrecker assembly in the bed, some folks think that might add value but it does nothing but hurt the value when it comes time to sell. If the crap in the back was gone, the engine was running and the truck able to move under its own power and stop to some degree and it was cleaned up as good as possible the truck was worth around 7500.00 IF these things were done. Just the way it was sitting there with all the unknowns and there are a LOT of them the truck was worth maybe 4500.00! Omy does it need a lot of work. I am doing a 50 Power wagon right now and it had only 18K original miles but it sat and sat and sat I will have a fair bit of money and LOTS of time into this one since I stripped it to a bare frame and virtually everything will be brand new the frame and entire drive train in powder coater diffs all new along with the trans and transfer case fully rebuilt I went all stainless steel brake lines and fuel lines when this truck is done I will be asking around $115,000 and it should sell without much trouble at all!

      @mr.goodpliers6988  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Right. Unless a vehicle has some unique history, celebrity ownership, or is a family heirloom, restoration cost often exceeds the value. Fortunately, the returns we get are more than monetary. Preserving history, teaching young people mechanical skills, and meeting collectors who share the passion, are all benefits restoration can bring!

I drove some old semis older than me. On these really old trucks they believed that having all axles braking on downhills or in bad weather, could induce skids. So that switch is likely a steer be axle disconnect, to prevent inducing a steer axle skid.

Truck Tractor Protection, was a front brake limiter, so that the steer axle would not lock up, during emergency brake applications. In "Truck", the driver had full steer axle brakes. In Tractor the pressure was reduced, so trailer did more of the stopping

Every truck I have driven with a truck/tractor protector switch locked the trailer brakes in the emergency position. There were no spring brakes in those days. The emergency brake on the tractor was a drum on the output shaft on the transmission which would not hold the truck on a slope. The trailer emergency brake only worked when you had aid pressure, so be careful to chock the wheels if parked on a slope and the engine not running. The only truck I have driven with a front brake limiter had a simple push/pull that shut off air to the front brakes.

Haha yeah it was bought by a friend of mine so I left the selling price out to avoid getting myself in trouble. He had to pay all of market price to get it... wasn't a $1500 truck LOL. He plans to keep it and get it running as far as I know

Way to much slop in that strap. Not good.

We wanted to keep as much distance from the tow vehicle as possible, since the old truck had no brakes.

@@mr.goodpliers6988 That I understand. Ive seen where people make turns with such a long tow strap. And while one is on the highway and one still at the T' to be pulled out onto the highway. Some goober usually winds up T' boning the tow strap in between the two vehicles. I'm sure half that strap would of worked out to keep from the cool WWll power wagon hitting that nice white truck of youres. Im not saying that any of you aren't experienced in towing. My point was that the strap was just seemed a bit longggg. Lol. Good luck with the DW you bought. Alot of us 4x4ers out would love to have it. But as far as me being a 4x4er. I think I would of restored it.

@@mr.goodpliers6988 So Mr. Goodpliers,,, the incredibly anti American algorithms of TH-cam finally suggested your Power Wagon and Binder auction to me. I watched with much boyish enjoyment as I used to be blessed with a couple of old mechanics in my neighborhood, who were the engine men for our local hydroplane, Miss Madison.
Their shop, was part and parcel like the properties in this video. Complete Menageries of mechanical engineering of all types. Absolute Heaven to a young boy who was physically and emotionally abused by a hateful and cold stepmother in his elementary school years.
Walking to school and getting to see the giant mahogany hull of Miss Madison take shape and color was something I couldn't have imagined, except to absorb it realtime, sometimes daily, on the walk to and from school.
That yard, with those old Power Wagons, and International 'Binders' just sitting around like silent testimony, to men who tended to wear striped engineer caps, coveralls, and have a red shop rag hanging out of their back pocket, I was so happy to watch along with you.
Now, everyone has moved on from those times, and what passes for mechanics and craftsmen today are jackasses like Richard Rawlings going on TV and buying an old ford truck for 400 bucks and cleaning it up and whining to the SUCKER he's moving it to, that "Oh, he's got SO MUCH MONEY tied up in it,,, he's just taking a terrible loss to sell it for 10 grand.
      Charlatan.
Old guys who drilled wells, welded engine cradles, and bored and honed cylinder jugs for War Plane engines to go boat racing on the weekends, are part of the fabric that made this country what it would become.
The Light of Liberty, for the entire WORLD.
Thanks ESPECIALLY for the slow scan you did at 'The Wall of Wisdom' those assorted bits of knowledge and frustration were posted where you could read and be entertained while your estimate was written or your bill was figured up.
Really good to see such pieces of Americana. Those old guys got dirty and sweated allot, for others to be able to have running water, electricity and finely crafted homes, and so much more. That row of glass pickle jars screwed to the bottom of the workbench ABSOLUTELY transported me to my Granddads workbench in the basement of their old house in North Vernon Indiana. I miss them terribly, my Grandfathers and their friends.
Contrary to what these hateful reporters on the mainstream media say about them,,, they worked hard, looked out for their neighbors and went to fight in foreign wars and came back to build businesses and engines and families and communities.
They were loving, caring people. So when someone with purple hair and a canister of bear spray is setting fire to my flag in the street and yelling that other white people are the problem...... it's those older people who I remember, that taught me to have pity and compassion for challenged folks like that.
Those old trucks reminded me of all these lessons.
      Thanks Again......
