I absolutely love your idea about HRC testing. KA-BAR Dozier-AUS 8 steel is something that I hope you will want to test. And also, if possible, a Mora fixed blade with 12C27 stainless steel.
Cool vid. Could you add a video about how this hardness tester works in your playlist ? I think it would be interesting to know a little bit more precisely what these numbers means and how they're obtainded.
This is a great idea, nice investment Alex. Apart from what you have seemingly already started, consistence; a comparison of same blade steel from same manufacturer, I'd like to see: - Same steel, different manufacturers and price ranges. How's Benchmades S30V compared to Spydercos and Civivi? - Super Steels - "A to Z": From a scam knife like Huusk to budgets like Mora stainless, and Carbon to expensive Super steel and Ceramic. Keep up the good work! Great to have you "back"!
I would love to see some kind of dollar store or even worse (if it even exists) knife in that kind of test to see if it is a real mild, unhardened steel. The worse knife the better in that case. Keep up the good work!
The Dollar Tree does sell a $1.25 SAK style knife. It's so bad, the best thing I could do is watch it get ran over in the street. The test may just press a hole through the blade.
@@tikofthetoka5650 This is precisely what I would like to see, what would really happen, but very good point:) It would be interesting if the HRC tester would bend the blade or something like that!
I once tested an opinel, and the listed hardness on the website was dead on. Opinel could probably improve their knives if they were left slightly harder, but they are really good at getting a consistent result.
Great idea for a video series! I would like to see the Bahco 2444 knife tested. They are ultra cheap, are actually comfortable and light weight come nasty sharp out of the factory hold a decent edge. The official information is they are 50-55 HRC,I have read that they are a re-branded Mora Companion. Thank you!
hi, really nice to see you are back! i believe these chinese steels aren´t that bad ( spyderco shows it) , i think the problem is a bad heat treatment protocol used by most of these chinese manufacturers. there are some chinese steels that resemble the sandvik series of knife steels, so it should be possible to heat treat them to same performance. 6cr13 is almost same composition like aebl, 7cr13 is like 13c27, 9cr13 is like 19c27 and the 8cr13 is in between them, or like a 440b with reduced chromium. so with the right heat treatment they should perform mostly equal to sandvik steels. i am really exited to see your next vid, if the heat treatment is consatnt or not. a test between jaktkit knife in 99cr18mov and cheap ganzo 9cr18 knife would also be nice i could imagine.
Id like to see some crkt knives tested, specifically id like to see the pilar. I used to carry one for edc but it always seemed to wear quickly. Thanks for the awesome content!
Hello. Maybe somehone else has already said that, but I would likes to suggest you a tip. Try to use a smaller base of the instrument: the smaller the better (like a cylinder of diametro = 7 mm). This will decrease the error caused by the curvature of the blade (you may get maybe 1-2 more HRC points). Of course It is more difficult to do (and more Dangerous for the durometer itself) because the blade (the sample) may slip out. Infact, where I work (big machanical industry in Italy, Quality Department) we have an accessory that you mount over the point, that Will go in contact with the sample and stabilize It during the measurament. Nice video.
The Mora Garberg in Stainless vs Carbon. A lot of discussion about the toughness of 14C28N vs 1095 floats around and one of the key components is what HRC they're hardened to. I've seen people claim 14C28N is 5 times tougher than 1095, a claim I find ridiculous
Great series, can't wait to see them all. ALL THE KNIVES IN THE LAND! Kidding, whatever you've got is fine with me, I'm curious about treatments from one manufacturer to another.
This is an awesome idea because some factory knives have good steel but don't perform as expected and others with fairly budget steels perform really well. My picks are the Civivi Elementum in S35VN, Kizer Mini Domin in N690, and the Boker Mini Strike auto in D2.
Its a grizzly branded tester. Made in china, but unfortunately I am not aware of anyone else who makes them. Unless you buy an old one but after looking for years I finally had to just buy new.
Just finished 3 lawns to be greeted by this video, glad I got notifications on! Could you try testing a a kershaw blur tanto? ~$80 This has been my everyday carry for 5 years and my dad's everyday carry for like 12years. His knife is significantly shorter from losing the tip and sharpening lol. Thankyou in advance if you do.!
I would love to see the hrc on some of your knives especially the difference between some of the knives you used the oven and parks oil against the mini forge, bbq and canola oil I think it would be be really awsome to have an idea what sort of numbers the new knife makers can achieve if you still have those knives that is
Nice video man ! Even with a very good heat treat, I don't fancy 8CR13Mov much. However, I love this steel with a serrated blade like on the Tenacious. For how hard it is (for this given steel), the teeth hold a very good edge for a good time, and do not break easy. I've only seen deformation at the moment, no chips.
This has been something I've been thinking has been needed for a very long time! The most critical part of any knife outside of design and materials is the heat treatment of the blade, which I think must be done well for the knife to perform well. Many manufacturers do a very poor job. I think we are seeing better HT over the past few years, but I would like to know which manufacturer is doing it right and doing it consistently. Of course, the latter will require some sort of statistical sampling which would be expensive, however, you might be able to test a dozen different steels from a manufacturer to see how they do across their line of products. I look forward to this new project. Maybe we could even do some edge testing after knowing the hardness of some blades. There seems to me that this is the next step in examining performance of blades by determining the quality of manufacturing of the blade itself. I will add that hardness is not the end in determining the quality since there are many recipes for heat treating, still this will be interesting.
Maybe I should disassemble some from my collection to send to you in order to boost your results. Are you open to a box of blades showing up in the mail to add to your testing? I would disassemble to reduce shipping and also reduce your time in doing so.
I might be up to knives being sent in in the future. Im kinda backed up with them at this point. Once i am through with what i have I might "open the books" so to speak. Thanks for the offer! Appreciate it!

Cool vid. Could you add a video about how this hardness tester works in your playlist ? I think it would be interesting to know a little bit more precisely what these numbers means and how they're obtainded.
This is a great idea, nice investment Alex.
Apart from what you have seemingly already started, consistence; a comparison of same blade steel from same manufacturer, I'd like to see:
- Same steel, different manufacturers and price ranges. How's Benchmades S30V compared to Spydercos and Civivi?
- Super Steels
- "A to Z": From a scam knife like Huusk to budgets like Mora stainless, and Carbon to expensive Super steel and Ceramic.
Nice video.
Absolutely👍👍 I am currently looking for one. As you know any deflection in a warped piece will give errors. Thanks for the comment 👍
Thank you for these tests
Not a Spyderco fan but good steel it appears.
Love your idea for this series of videos.
Test Civivi knives.
Lot of us own them.
Tease!!!!!!!! But glad to see you back on youtube guy!
Nice job!
It would be really cool to see Spyderco's S90V, S110V and ZDP-189. And a Bugout in S90V.
Any Hinderer!!!
Sorry, to soon??? 🤣😜
GREAT idea, this will be a cool series.
Id rather not buy one, but if I find someone who has one ill test it. I have a good lawyer🙂
Thanks Alex !!
I would love to see any victorinox basic knife, they’re literally everywhere, I can’t imagine anyone who likes knives not owning one
recommendation - product that tests hardness - TTC 6 Piece Hardness Tester File Set.
Good video , thanks for sharing.
Big league tester! All that's missing in the description is where you got it. Looking forward to your collection getting their tests. ✌
I'll be very interested to see the difference between manufacturers. Like S30V from Benchmade, Spyderco, maybe Buck. Can't wait'
YES! Love this video please do some Benchmade m390
I would love to see the hrc on some of your knives especially the difference between some of the knives you used the oven and parks oil against the mini forge, bbq and canola oil I think it would be be really awsome to have an idea what sort of numbers the new knife makers can achieve if you still have those knives that is
I'd love to see any N690 steel tested, particularly from Fox knives if you can. I love that steel and think it's under utilized
