Bruh, I still can't believe the Oscars gave Best Picture to Green Book and not Blackkklansman.

I cannot tell you how sick and tired I am of "white savior" movies.

What drives (pun intended) me mad about Green Book is that on top of making racism look like "Oh, it's a matter of stop being jerks to black people" (if it was *that* simple we wouldn't still have racism now), they decided to tell the story from Viggo Mortensen's character who's a white guy who decides to stop being racist because he made a cool black friend, instead of focusing on the black homosexual pianist.
I really doubt that Tony Lip's family will find me a recording where Don Shirley said: "Hey man, when they make a movie about us, I ABSOLUTELY want it to be all about you, while I'm just kind of a supporting character who gets less insight and POV!"

I saw this movie with some of my oldest friends when it came out, and the feeling we got during that final montage was indescribable.
    Great video, dude.

As an American Jewish girl, your section an antisemitism is spot on. Even if I'm an antheist, I am still s proud Jew ethnically and culturally. But for us reform Jews without visible Judaism our white priviledge is stark. I even have family members who lean into their whiteness despite that white supremecy is antisemitic.

Excellent video dude. I really appreciate using your platform on here to discuss something more serious in the real world and in your personal life. And tying it back to the film to get a point across. Especially with a film that demands that kind discussion which a lot of "critics" on here seem to either ignore entirely or be bothered by the film "preaching" about it (with its ending especially). So good on you for doing so.

Lol according to some, if the film features characters dealing with racial inequality when for those particular characters, that would be the world outside their doors, your film is considered 'preachy'. Thanks for watching.

Wow this was liek, a really amazing analysis on the film and you focused on an underappreciated aspect that gave it a lot more meaning, especially considering there's a lot of blatant storytelling and theming of the story. You definitely earned a sub from me and I'm shocked you aren't more popular.
I would recommend though that you may want to add a trigger warning to the beginning of the video showing the George Floyd footage? I realize that is kind of ironic considering how BlacKKKlansman ends though it is a very visceral, upsetting thing that might hurt others. You don't have to edit around it or remove it; though I think a warning for more casual audiences may help.

My girlfriend brought this up too which is why I added a disclaimer at the beginning with the Spoiler card. I felt there was something important in letting it be seen for what it was, even if briefly, but I understand the feeling it may leave viewers and apologise if it left you uncomfortable. Thanks for the kind words, really means a lot. If you want to help the channel gain more exposure, please feel free to share this around! :)

    Great work here, Sam!
Spike Lee is a filmmaker I greatly admire, he makes highly entertaining movies that are equally thought provoking, and just straight-up provocative. You were inspired to talk about BlacKkKlansman, and I recently went back to Do the Right Thing. The man has an unmistakable voice, and we remember his words!
Growing up, I was relatively unaware of my bi-racial makeup, my mother is 1/3 native, but she was adopted, so I (like my mother) got to enjoy a white privilege unaware that I had genetic difference. It wasn’t until college, and working at a movie theater, when I started getting the question “so... what are you? Mexican? Just tan?” I got that a lot, and it honestly baffled me. I began to think that if people are this weird about race when they can’t peg me down, how frustrating and insufferable must these kinds of interactions be for those who can be successfully profiled? Adam Driver’s monologue you played was a cathartic experience for me when I first saw BlacKkKlansman.
What I thought was most fascinating about BlacKkKlansman as an expression of Spike Lee was how it was about a black man who choses to become involved in an institution that is systemically racist, and will take the hate he knows is coming, because it has always been his dream to be a police officer. I can’t help but compare that to Lee’s own journey as a filmmaker. His radical politics, but his clear love of classic Hollywood films and the cinematic art form seem to be contradictory, but it makes him one hell of an important, unique, and special artist.

I hadn't considered that perspective; very astute! Yes, it's not unlike how Spike had the ambition to make a name for himself in the film industry despite the uphill battle he'd had anticipated and endured going in. Thanks for sharing your story.

Very good analysis, Sam! Did you see Lee's newest film DA 5 BLOODS?

    • @SamsChannelOfficial
      @SamsChannelOfficial  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Unlike any other film I'll probably see all year (keep in mind, I've only seen about 9 movies so far in 2020). Lee's opera of jungle madness and PTSD over fighting for a country that doesn't love you even remotely the way you love it, is a perfect commentary for right now. Delroy Lindo's performance is incredible.
