    I'm a proud West Virginian from Stong scots,irish, and welsh stock. My family came to North America in 1635. We've been here for 389 years . This song makes me think of all my family and friends and pastors waiting for me in heaven. I've been a christian for over 52 years. Yes, I want to go home and see my family and friends. Most of all, I can't wait to see my savior. That will truly be me reward.

    I grew up with this music. Second Creek Baptist Church in South central Tennessee. People from all around would gather round for dinner outside under the trees, no air conditioners, the Ladies all had their 'funeral home fans' and I remember all my folks getting up to lead a song or two. Mother started teaching me to sing the shaped notes. Oh how I miss my family in the circle singing praises to God and enjoying the sweet fellowship and the joy we shared.

    It's startling to see this sung by the Irish, this song came from the Scots-Irish immigrants of Appalachia, based on an old Scottish folk tune. The song came from people who experienced unimaginable hardship, who had traveled so far, and who knew the would never again see the loved ones they'd left behind this side of heaven. It's a song of longing and hope, of reunion and rest from suffering. You can't really appreciate it without thinking of where it came from, and of what those words truly meant to the people who first sang them.

      Now everyone just knows it from 1917. As an American, I do have to admit that it was pretty darn haunting and well done in that film. Maybe even better than Cold Mountain.

      Firstly, it’s Ulster Scots and not “Scots Irish” and secondly, this tradition is English.

      @@ToweyBowey In the first place she isn't commenting of the style of singing, she is talking about the song, 'Wayfaring Stranger' And secondly the Ulster-Scots immigrants in the US have been referred to as Scots-Irish for nearly 200 years.

    Years ago I wandered into a courthouse in Cullman, Alabama where a Sacred Harp Convention was taking place. The music has hunted me ever since and on rare occasions, I've been in a place where I could hear it.

    I am a poor, wayfaring stranger,
    While journ’ying through this world of woe,
    Yet, there’s no sickness, toil nor danger,
    In that bright land to which I go.
    I’m going there to see my Father,
    I’m going there no more to roam;
    Chorus:
    I’m only going over Jordan,
    I’m only going over home.
    I know dark clouds will gather o’er me,
    I know my way is rough and steep;
    Yet beaut’ous fields lie just before me,
    Where God’s redeemed their vigils keep.
    I’m going there to see my Mother,
    She said she’d meet me when I come.
    (Chorus)
    I want to wear a crown of glory,
    When I get home to that good land;
    I want to shout Salvation’s story,
    In concert with the blood-washed band.
    I’m going there to meet my Savior,
    To sing His praise forevermore;
    (Chorus)

    To hear this in our church during morning worship would be such a thrill! One of my grandmothers used to sing with a group of people that would get together. This was many years ago and I've seen her hymnal. I was always curious why it was in 'landscape' orientation rather than the 'normal' 'portrait' mode of today's hymnals. I've always loved this song. This is the first time I've heard it sung by sacred harp singers. I don't usually sing it as fast as this. This is a nice change of pace.

    As I was listening, captivated, I realized that a similar structure can be heard in African, Pacific island, and even native American singing. They may not have used the written shapes, but the haunting harmonies are there.

      Most Primitive Baptist churches in the southeastern United States have Sacred Harp signings once a month. They have regular church services 3 Sundays, then on the fourth Sunday, they hold an all day Sacred Harp singing. All the people bring a covered dish for lunch, and I’m telling you... those people can cook!!!

    • @GerhardVenter221
      @GerhardVenter221 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, it refers to the old (probably somewhat incorrect in the details) notion that each transformed soul (i.e. after death) will receive a little harp and a set of wings, white robe, etc. Note that I firmly believe in the hereafter - it's just the trope that's a tad hackneyed. Anyway, the closest we can come to everlasting praise here on earth is to use the one instrument God gave us -- our voices; His sacred harp, as it were. I've checked the available materials - "sacred harp" definitely refers to the human voice when it is used as intended: to praise God.
