    This is literally what I've been doing all along. It works great for the first few chapters, but when you move on and things get more complicated, everything falls apart. The problem I have is that I can think of several reasons why one thing or another should happen in a mechanism. Does the nucleophile attack the carbonyl carbon first? Does the carbonyl oxygen protonate first? Why doesn't the C=O pi bond grab a hydrogen and bind it to the C? I can think of reasons why all of these things might happen, but I've yet to come across a good explanation of why one happens and the others don't. The understanding is helpful, but it still comes down to memorization.

    • @Leah4sci
      @Leah4sci  5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      This is why the method includes 'cheating' for the first few attempts. By following along you're not stuck trying to figure it out. Instead you learn from a resource that you copy over and over till you get it. (this is for the memorization aspect. for the question of why you should look up or ask to ensure you understand every step of the mechanism)

    • @Kishoreragi
      @Kishoreragi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You should know inductive effect, conjugation, and other effects to know if any electron density changing on the atom you are trying to connect/disconnect, and also bond strengths and angles, electron affinity, electro negativity of the participating atoms in the molecule. I suggest you to memorize 3 standard values of any property mentioned and try to stock other things while earning into the gaps, so that you can know the approximate values. I say that you don't need to remember exact values but you should know which must have lower/higher than the other. You should develop the ability to compare.

    My way of doing it is by writing the mechanisms a few times for different compounds. after all there are about 6 mechanisms that will take you to second year in university if you know them and their slight alterations.

    • @Leah4sci
      @Leah4sci  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      6 conceptual but most of my students have to learn dozens of different reaction mechanisms

    • @antonmarkov2893
      @antonmarkov2893 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Leah4sci In my opinion with enough understanding you can derive most organic mechanism, from the main ones. I don't know if I approach the problem in such a way because I am awful at remembering or because my professor is lazy.

    • @Leah4sci

      The advanced student can eventually get here, however most of my students are studying at the undergraduate level and so are not at this point. You are too funny about suggesting that you're learning them well due to being lazy.

That is my go to thing ....and then i get overwhelmed at this massive document i feel like i have to review, that takes forever to review. Theres so many topics I feel like I need to write everything down. But I end up just compiling so many notes and dont spend enough time in 'active study' mode. Thanks so much for all your help!! Leah4sci Yup, just memorization. He tells us to look at the pattern as if the reagents aren’t important. He also taught the course in the order of the textbook chapters rather than in a way that introducing the different reactions, their mechanisms and reagents would make sense logically.
