It could be. On the other hand....Well, I've always hated and despised this type of "music.". Even so, I once read a review of this recording, or maybe it was one with "Blue" in the title, that was so enthusiastic, that it made me think that I had to give the guy another chance, so I bought the CD. When I got it home, it sat on a shelf, and sat, and sat, and....I just couldn't force myself to listen to it. Finally, remembering the pain and anger that previous listenings had caused me, I THREW IT INTO THE TRASH CAN.. Yes, without listening to it, I threw a brand new CD into the trash to save myself from the ordeal that listening to it would cause. Too bad I didn't know any insane or incarcerated people that would have loved it.

I’ve always appreciated Coltrane… but have noticed many people saying how ‘Love Supreme’ is probably his greatest work and possibly the greatest Jazz album of all time. On more than one occasion people have spoken about this album with Holy regard… In Devine terms, as if it literally helps them understand God. Is there a suggested listening path I should take to properly understand that album? The playing seems extraordinary and sounds great and I definitely appreciate it… but is there here something/s in particular that make that album stand out among his and other great works and possibly the greatest album ever? Is it because of his point in life at that time or his notes to the listener or something sonically that people are really appreciating specific to LS?

    • @landongorton2686

I think for many people, myself included, A Love Supreme is the perfect mix between Coltrane's early bop styled stuff, and his late free jazz experimentation. The songs are still very grounded and the structures and melodies are still present, but the performances and soloing are off the charts in terms of experimentation and technicality. If you want some insight into John Coltrane's spiritual connection in relation to the recording of this album, I encourage you to read the liner notes (which can be found online). Its almost a concept album of sorts, about John Coltrane's spiritual journey towards finding god in 1957, which was the year before he released Blue Train.

John Coltrane talks about Charlie Parker "The first time I heard Bird play," he told DownBeat magazine, "it hit me right between the eyes." 😉 www.cbc.ca/radio/q/blog/on-the-50th-anniversary-of-his-death-12-fascinating-facts-about-john-coltrane-1.4209266

Who here knows that he intoned the words of his written poem/prayer from the album's back cover into his Psalm Suite's saxophone notes, blowing one note per word into his instrument? If you listen while reading the prayer he wrote alongside it as he plays it, I imagine you might get enlightened. :) Click like if you were aware of that already. I'm doing an informal poll. Thanks. :)

Don't know why, but of all the Coltrane albums, I just don't get into this one. I know it's on many people's top 10 list (many at number 1). Just don't like it. The "Love Supreme" mantra on it just turns me off. I love his other albums, just not this one.

It is nowhere near Trane's best work. Any of his Prestige albums with Red Garland are better than this.

@@tefroqr3994 What is the connection between critical opinion about this album and ''kind of negative'' ? I love John Coltrane but for a lot of poeple (and me also) love supreme is very very overrated ! This album poses many problems, both aesthetic and philosophical.

@@rinahall I played this album to death back in the day, without chemical enhancers or whatsoever, or religious or spiritual transfiguration of any kind, I just found the music soothing, entrancing and at the same complex enough to set it far apart from any new age nonsense which I detest to the day. This half-hour may have become so popular because it doesn't require the listening and staying power to dissect and process like a dozen Charlie Parker solos or an evening with Lennie Tristano and his disciples would. Many people just get with Trane's flow, like they do with "Kind of Blue", to name another album that could be deemed _overrated,_ not so much because it would lack the greatness to deserve its acclaim, but because its peers, contemporary albums with at least the same amount of distinctively unique musical content are, in comparison, criminally neglected and disregarded at the same time. Having said that, as long as those artists whom I love and who've been integral parts of the soundtrack of my life, like Trane and Miles, and don't forget McCoy Tyner and Jimmy Cobb, who are still among us, tend to be overrated at times, I'm happy to live with that. One thing is for sure, even the most overrated jazz albums ought to be more popular than they are.

@@henridelagardere264 I find the theme (tribute to God) of this terribly naive and backward-looking album, even for 1965. Coltrane has gone astray in a narcissistic "spiritual" regression of bigotry totally mind-blowing for a man of his intelligence. He made African-American music return to the church, even though it had taken 60 years to get out! In the years that followed, his playing became less and less interesting and finally ended in an inaudible cry. I find the sound of the group terribly aggressive (certainly due to the minor and modal tones without variations), I find the sound of Coltrane on this horrible and stressful album, I find the improvisations of Coltrane horribly oppressive. I find the melodies without interest, none has the evocative force of some of its little-known melodies like '' Welcome ''. And finally I find the recording awful: the saxophone on the left over-mixed the rest of the group on the right in a glass bell.

@@rinahall Your candid and unambiguous delineation is very much appreciated, I think any artist wishes that even more than half a century after his death people will be having strong feelings and fiery debates over his legacy. Being an atheist, the ecclesiastic angle you expressed so vividly never occurred to me, the whole "Love Supreme"/divinity never appealed to me either, if I ever lost thoughts on extra-musical aspects, these would have been more on the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Or maybe I just played it to death, because I was only 17 and my collection consisted of only two dozen albums and not 20,000 like today. Fortunately, no two tastes are the same, and people do change with time. Let's both give a big hand to our mutual friend, the jiving jazzman from Frankfurt, the highly eclectic Jarvis X, whose programs range from dipsy doodling Larry Clinton to space explorer Sun Ra and beyond, raising memories of various kinds. Cheers!
