I've met and played with (same stage, same night, different band) Henrik, he's one of the most humble people I've ever hung out with. So glad to see and hear what they've done. Henrik’s got the name ARON ‘tattooed’ onto one of his fake hands, and yeah I guess it’s not a phase, since Aron not only plays killer drums, edits all of their videos, writes a lot of their tunes, including the lyrics, but ALSO a lot of Henrik’s bass lines… This song is such a goof. Everything comes in twos: two keyboard sets, two bass drums, two bass guitar necks (the double bass ;), two pairs of hands for Henrik, two choruses, two bass solos…. Can´t get enough of your reactions to Dirty Loops, knowing you have so much more to discover, about as amazing as this, on as many levels - enjoy! PS saw a live recording of this the other day - and Henrik pulls it off live as well ; )
They are forever being silly...not taking themselves too serious. Humility that flies in the face of the fact that they have few rivals - in skill, song writing, production value, et al.
I just LOVE the look of bewilderment on all the reaction videos of this song. A couple have no idea who Dirty Loops are before this song and just don't know what to make of them. Your amazement is shared by all of us the first time we saw this. Henrik is hysterical with the 4 hands and the fake splits. A FUN reaction!
Definitely go to see them if you can. I saw them in Prague last summer. Great concert. Also, it was a small venue so there weren´t any VIP packages to buy, they just came out to see us after the show, we could chat, and get some signs and photos... They were really nice.
Nitt, henrik basically play Bass, but with many effects as described in comments below, his hands technik is Slap combined with pull and hammer-on but in an insane way, Henrik is my favorite bassist in the universe, the whole band is always showing they are in another level, and another and another... Please keep reacting to more dirty loops.
finally you reacted ❤ so good to see your different facial expressions every time more suprised then seconds befor! Glad that you are a real fan now! loved your reactions.. i just saw there is a live version of them playing this song. keep up the good work
Most bands (actually, all bands playing larger venues) will play to a click. You can actually sync this to control backing tracks, lights, and more importantly, effects via MIDI or a DAW. May not be as common in the classical/jazz world but to my knowledge it is super common in pop/rock/metal and anything technical.
Thanks, I enjoyed this the most out of the Dirty Loops songs I've heard. Obviously they're amazing musicians and the self-conscious cheesiness in this one was fun.
There's a quite recent vid up on yt where Henrik explains his board - Henrik has all of his board midi controlled (pre programmed). He even has a synth in his board, which explains quite a lot of the soundbytes. Only thing he has to do live is controlling his whammy bar by foot (besides playing like a possessed maniac :D ) As a bunch of goofy friends they are hilarious!!! :) btw, it's not a "real" key change, they just switch from e-major to e-minor after the second verse (the verses being Henrik's solos).
In Boston on Sunday his MIDI system malfunctioned and we lost the half of his first solo! He was really funny about it afterwards though and apologized, saying "we've got this amazing system that changes all of our sounds for us when we need them, and now you know what it sounds like when it doesn't work."
Yeah i mean think about how many of the worst pop songs they could possibly find to cover they did (Adele, Justin B., etc). This isn't new. Injecting a shit sound/genre with enough talent until it's unironically good
Great reaction! I remember when I had to lift my jaw off the floor when this came out. I'm not sure if they are playing homage to Van Halen with the riffs and Taylor Swift with the vocals or just poking fun at the whole bunch of them. I love it just the way it is...left to the imagination.
So nice to see and hear your reaction and analysis. I suggest you listen to: Next to you -Jonah’s vocals, the composition with various influences Work shit out - Jonah’s piano skills, Aron’s drum skills, the composition
Among other sounds, Henrik is using an extreme pitch shifting effect controlled by a hinged pedal. To understand it, think of a simple pitch bend wheel on a keyboard; it typically slides the pitch up/down by a semitone or two. Now imagine the pitch able to slide up three octaves, controlled by a pedal instead of a wheel.
So this is a parody of the whole 80’s era. You can see that everything is almost comically exaggerated, the costums, the lights, the whole song. Also, Henrik can play everything 😂
We saw them live in concert in Charlotte, NC, on March 30th. Incredible does not even come close to seeing them perform live!!!! We were in the front row of the audience and YES!!!!! Henrick plays all of those notes!!! And Jonah’s voice is every bit as amazing live as it is in a recording. What a privilege!!!
I went to see them live in Paris when they toured in Europe. I prefer their jazz/fusion stuff more than their pop/fusion songs but everything was still impressive nonetheless. On stage, they had a second keyboardist/backing vocalist to do all what all three do not play.
He has a synth and other effects running through the bass but the interesting part is (as I understand it) that it is programmable to go through a string of effects or fade in and out while letting the musician just worry about playing. I believe Polyphia uses something similar.
I just saw Dirty Loops live last night in NYC and they were awesome. They did Runaway and Henrik was amazing. There is a video out there where Henrik explains his pedals and effects. He has two full rigs with at least 6 effect boxes and a pedal on each rig.
The particular foot pedal that Henrik is using does two things: 1. It's a synth that tracks the pitch he's playing on the bass and: 2. The pedal itself is a continuously variable transposer with an overall range of up to 3 octaves (or possibly more). The pedal also contains a footswitch that turns the effect on and off, allowing him to change between the synth/pitch bender effect and his "natural" bass sound (plus whatever other signal processing -- EQ, compression, etc. --- he's using the pedal board for) pretty much at will.
First off: I know the catalogue of these 3 crazy Swedes and I love them to bits! Then came THIS and it caught me off guard the first because it sounds like extreme Pop loopified to the MAX! But what intrigued me next was the combination of the lyrics and the glorious character of the song... sounds crazy, right? It´s like tainted love on drugs or sth 🥴 next is what they are wearing, all the glitter and pink all around, it´s if Dirty Loops is assaulting Barbie Land - so crazy weird and GOOD!!! Great reaction btw and I totally understand the interruptions because - overload lol
Just getting into Dirty Loops and I like exploring artists through reactors and you might be my favorite for Dirty Loops. It's like a double, I get a new band and a new reactor. Of course, I subscribed and will check out the videos you already did.
bass pedals, octavizer and a wah and distortion...bed tracks and they are multi tracking to liveso theeres multiple keys and SFX gong on. im sure jonah doubles things that the bass is doing, and they are using sequenced loops in the background. massive production
As a long time bass player and former audio engineer I can only guess myself how they'd do that glitchy "cutting out" or kill switch effect live, but maybe I can share a few ideas. In an interview on Rick Beato's 2nd channel Henrik said that it was actually just 2 effects pedals he used for some wild sounds, recorded a few 8 bar segments and gave those to Aron to use as samples, rearrange and just generally screw around with. Aron mumbled: "Stupid idea..." while shaking his head when Henrik was talking about it. :D So the following ideas for a live effect are just for the fun of it: 1) You could have a laptop running Ableton live on stage (or any other DAW but Ableton is the most widely used, purpose built and stable in a live setting), program the glitch rhythm in there and remotely toggle mute on compatible hardware digitally, or feed that rhythm into the side chain trigger of either a kill switch effect or a very harsh and quick noise gate as an audio signal. I've seen Aron use Ableton on stage before, so I find this the most likely, as most of their songs are composed all the way through with little to no improvisation. Otherwise this setup wouldn't work (well). 2) You could program the glitch rhythm into a drum computer, sequencer or make a dedicated trigger sample for use with a launchpad and have that signal trigger a kill switch effect. This would be a so-called one-shot effect. Press the button once and the glitch effect will happen start to finish, cutting your signal when applicable. Splitting it up into multiple sections is also an option. You should really link this setup to a click track to make sure it's synchronized with the rest of the band, if available. Otherwise you could also use a tap tempo feature with a pedal to feed the tempo in manually if required. 3) You could use the side chain trigger input of a kill switch pedal fed by an 8th or 16th note version of the click track. If you hold the pedal down it would cut the output for a set time every time the click comes in. For example a 32nd note to result in staccato 16th, given a 16th note click track and a continuous signal input. Then you could layer a slower rhythm by "playing" the pedal with your foot to make it humanly playable while playing the bass solo at the same time. Difficult but possible. 4) You could have somebody else play the glitch rhythm on a launchpad, preferably a drummer or percussionist. No click track required, though this would bring along other challenges because they'd either have to play whenever there's supposed to be silence or use a toggle to flip signal and silence, which can be problematic in multiple ways though.
About the bass there, yes the E string has a 2 fret extension to D so the glue vise acts like a capo. The tuner for that string actually sits at the back of the body behind the bridge, and that is actually a Hipshot D-tuner, so the E- string can actually drop down to C
Notice the guitars change in the middle just before the second face-melting. Then it changes back to the double-necked one like the beginning. Fun reactions.
This song is obviously intended to be more comical than others, although they do love to have fun together. The song is intended to be a parody on the old 80s and 90s rock bands. That’s why you see the double bass drum kit, the double neck guitar, and the keyboard rack with four different keyboards. All the synthesizer sounds and the style of the melody complete the parody sound of those bands from the 80s and 90s. So fun!
Could be delay effects or MIDI bass, where the bass is triggering other notes or sounds via MIDI signal, and of course, could just be multitracked as you said for the other instruments playing back in the final mix... the muting between the instruments could simply be a Gate, where sound from one instrument is used to mute the sound from another. Lots of songs in the mix mute the bass drum via "sidechaining" when the bass guitar plays a note, so they don't get summed as signals and make it muddy from too much low frequency content in the mix.
I got ya... Violinist who discovered pedals last year and has discovered Dirty Loops in the last week and fallen in love (feels inevitable for a life long Bela Fleck & The Flecktones fan) So, the primary aspects of what you are hearing are a combination of a synth pedal and octaver. The pedal is an expression pedal controlling transitioning between the more effect heavy with the added distortion and back to his absolutely gorgeous base bass tone. And as for his bass playing, we're talking double thumb slapping, pops galore, and obviously all the tapping. The best way I can put it. As someone who understands what the pedals are doing and an extremely low level bassist knowing what techniques he's using.... Understanding it only makes it more impressive.
Henrik is using a lot of effects, including a pitch shifter controlled by the expression pedal. But those "bass solos" were created in edit: Henrik recorded a bunch of bits and bobs that Aron edited together for maxmimum jarring effect. They do play the song live, but the bass parts do not have the exact same chopped up effect that they do here.
Particularly as a bassist, I don't want to disparage Henrik's technique-, genre- and sonic-blowing solos. But in terms of composition, structure, and Jonah's keyboard playing, this is one of DL's most simplistic songs, albeit very powerful and bombastically funny. As previously mentioned, check out their earlier originals such as "The Way She Walks" -- the interjections are amazing as are their collective chops and songwriting -- you'll LOVE it, their first-ever original song which became a #1 hit in Japan, "Hit Me"; "I'm Lost in You"; Then there are some of their amazing, out-of-the-box covers such as "Ta Fete" (Stromae), "Undo" (Sanna Neilsen) and "Over the Horizon" (contracted by Samsung) and even Justin Bieber's "Roller Coaster." (Hint: It's always fun to check out a snippet of the original version of the covers to appreciate how much DL "loopified" it.)
Henrik always makes me think of John Entwistle of The Who who wouls say when asked about his style that he played it like a guitar, because thats ehat it is. A bass guitar. That, and the fact he would play bass with the treble turned all the way up.
you can modify any digital signal input , ie bass note in , anything out , of course it helps if you are one of the best contemporary bass players around.
It´s a great fun video. But they are still on tour and they have started to include this song in their setlist. It´s just an audience recording, but Henrik can really do these sounds live on his bass. th-cam.com/video/TJIjETLrxDg/w-d-xo.html
Welcome to the wonderful world of Dirty Loops...get your reaction round the latest music , 'When the time is Right' and a cover of a Stevie Wonder track 'In the city.'. also listen to Jonah's sole track ' Diamond ring' featuring a guest appearance from Steve Vai and also a version of MJ's 'Bad' ,so will be looking forward to your reaction on them as your reactions are epic and a joy to watch.
Hi Nitt, If you want tosee some real guitar awesomeness you should check this video out, it is by the Canadian band Rush and performed as part of their "Time Machine " tour in 2011 filmed in Cleveland, this video is of 2 songs back to back the songs are "la Villa Strangiato" and "Working Man" these guys had been together as a group for over 30 years when they filmed this. The video is a 4k remaster of the show done by stickhits and is just over 14 minutes long but well worth a watch, Loved yor reaction to Wagakki Band it is good to see someone so enthusiastic about traditional instruments you should do more from this great band as they are very underrated here in the west.
:D So the following ideas for a live effect are just for the fun of it:
1) You could have a laptop running Ableton live on stage (or any other DAW but Ableton is the most widely used, purpose built and stable in a live setting), program the glitch rhythm in there and remotely toggle mute on compatible hardware digitally, or feed that rhythm into the side chain trigger of either a kill switch effect or a very harsh and quick noise gate as an audio signal.
Henrik is NOT A.I. "Is that every single note he's playing?" exactly explains the 4 hands 2 necks joke. Love it.

So fun!
This is Henrik, there is nothing in the world that he cannot do on bass guitar
Also, just for the note. This was Dirty Loops' first video with an amazing full light show.
The powerchords in the choruspart is actually a guitar added in the recording. However not in the soloparts as far as I know.
I got ya...
Violinist who discovered pedals last year and has discovered Dirty Loops in the last week and fallen in love (feels inevitable for a life long Bela Fleck & The Flecktones fan)
So, the primary aspects of what you are hearing are a combination of a synth pedal and octaver.
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Henrik is using a lot of effects, including a pitch shifter controlled by the expression pedal. But those "bass solos" were created in edit: Henrik recorded a bunch of bits and bobs that Aron edited together for maxmimum jarring effect. They do play the song live, but the bass parts do not have the exact same chopped up effect that they do here.
Suggest Rock you for your next Dirty Loops reaction. It will blow your mind 🤯
Best reaction kinda ever on DL, go girl
I don't think he sold his soul, he plays with so much of it.
No, the statement is he plays the bass as if he has four hands!
I had no idea this was a common thing said about him. I’m still really new to the Dirty Loops family. 😅
@@NittPiccthing is, I find, Henrik not only shreds like he’s got 4 hands, he’s also a divine funk, slap and jazz bass player ✨✨✨
…and here is another side of Arons musicianship: th-cam.com/video/QW1wmf51vsg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=IsrRnNoEHvvBC7-J
Henrik always makes me think of John Entwistle of The Who who wouls say when asked about his style that he played it like a guitar, because thats ehat it is. A bass guitar. That, and the fact he would play bass with the treble turned all the way up.
The Warning = Alejandra (Ale) 🎸🎤+ Paulina (Pau) 🥁🎤+ Daniela (Dany) 🎤🎸 Villarreal. Three talented Mexican sisters. !!!🎵ole ole ole oleeee Warning Warning🎵¡¡¡. Greetings from Argentina.
you can modify any digital signal input , ie bass note in , anything out , of course it helps if you are one of the best contemporary bass players around.
Also, could you please check out Breakdown from them? Completely different stuff..
I'm a HUGE Dirty Loops fan... but you've GOTTA check out Lawrence- Don't Lose Sight (Acousticish)... talk about melting your face off!!! 😃
It sounds like he's doing a mix of super legato and slap with an octave pedal and a kill switch.
He didn't sell his soul, he practiced before incarnating :) ( starseed :) like little kids who can play like crazy at 3 years old)
😉 …and another amazing thing: Henrik started learning the piano at age 4, before taking up the bass when he was around 13….
🤯
It´s a great fun video. But they are still on tour and they have started to include this song in their setlist. It´s just an audience recording, but Henrik can really do these sounds live on his bass. th-cam.com/video/TJIjETLrxDg/w-d-xo.html

Hes using a whammy pedal and an octave pedal
You totally missed Arons pink leggings, fantastic.
Listen to Breakdown….
Oh he play those notes. Just visit one of the concerts and you'll be silenced
Did you notice, by chance that Henrik has 3 hands! One of them is obviously fake.
Here is the link to the Rush Video enjoy... th-cam.com/video/fEZDFPsL50M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=57LC8kFsTHsQTvIz
