There is a lot of engineering and innovation in the Sun Princess' massive theater, whose configuration can change drastically day-to-day, depending on the performance. But one
"weird" fact that that struck Adam Savage, as a theater guy, is how everything -- from costumes to sets to gear -- comes in one little door. What a coincidence. I'm currently working on a Sun Princess show. For the last 5 years I've been making Costume Props for their Stage Shows . It's so cool to see the behind the scenes of what I've been working on.
If I went on a cruise, the most enjoyable thing for me would be a multi-day tour of the inner workings of the ship. I'm not a big gambler and I can't dance, but the engineering behind how a floating city works, THAT's interesting.
Do they have such tours? If not, why not?
Agreed. A tour of the engineering sections would be all I'd care for on a cruise.
A cruise dedicated to the engineering of the ship would likely be the only thing that would convince me to sign up for a cruise

I've been on a couple Princess cruises and they had behind-the-scenes tours for the kitchens which are massive and kind of interesting, but no engine room stuff. I don't think they would take folks there for the liability and security, they're super tight spaces and you need hearing protection, etc.
This whole series has been amazing! It's a very unique look into things we don't usually get to see. This has also definitely been better than most sponsored content - it feels very much tailored to showcase things the channel viewers (and Adam) would enjoy seeing.
Fun facts! The theater on a cruise ship is more advanced that any theater on Broadway. The same Broadway show goes on for years, on a cruise ship we change the show up to 7 times per cruise.
As someone who likes knowing how things are made, Likes big machines, works with steel, works tech at a local theatre, and has watched Adam forever... This video is the best.

Many people underestimate the incredible engineering that goes into the creation of these gigantic, floating dysentery wards.
I so hope we get another video of the theater when it's complete and everything's installed. I get some many inspirational ideas for shows I work on by seeing how the pros do it.
The engineering of this boat is ridiculous. Never been on a cruise, never will. But do like this content, a lot!

This is so cool! I work with the company that builds most of the scenery for Princess, and I've done quite a few installs on new and old ships! The previous theatres were already advanced and at the top of their class so I'm excited to see the opportunities and problem-solving of this new design and leap forward!
These streams are such fun. I most likely will never cruise. Viewing the design and engineering that goes into this ( or any) floating building fascinates me. I look forward to your future posts about the Sun Princess.🌻

As a performer who also trained in tech *and* stage management (two theatre degrees), I definitely appreciate the geeking out going on here!! I doubt I'll get a chance to even get on the ship, let alone the theatre, but I can still dream! (And as a part-time wheelchair user, I *definitely* appreciate getting the best seats in the house!! 😊)
Loved this! What a superb space to work with and what a great collaboration between all disciplines to create it. The creation of theatre is just as magical as the experience

Man, I was expecting the door to open into a cantilevered stage so you could have indoor performances still backdropped against the sunset or port of call.

I worked at a shipyard in the ‘80s. Remember the smell of burnt steel and grinding discs.

It's ok if this never gets read, but thanks for making Mythbusters so educational. I had to help my sister with some physics homework recently, and it all just felt really natural and easy. Even though I've never actually worked with air pressure or mechanical advantage. Looking back, a lot of that probably just comes from the you and Jamie explaining so many mechanical principles.

As someone who had the good fortune to be on the Majestic Princess just a few months ago. Seeing the Sun Princess go from a concept video to this has been amazing. I will probably never go on another cruise but these videos are really making me dream.

Thank you for taking us with you on this grand adventure!! Amazing vision, story and work by Princess, and watching Adam share his love of the engineering, art and technique is just wonderful. Being an old ship snipe, wish I could be there with him to share it. Adam is so very respectful to the project team and craftsmen and trades .... very important for them to get the credit and appreciation he shows. Hope he gets to see and take us into the actual engineering spaces ... usually not available due to security, but they got some howler gensets down there I'd love to see!! Well done as always Team T !!

This is just a fancy implementation of a combination of the black box theater and a repertory theatre.
Like, I wouldn't do a vacation on a ship like that, I mean, why even go to sea if all you do is pretty much stuff you would do at land... I certainly can appreciate the engineering of those thing tho, its incredible how these things are built.
When Adam shows the model and where the door is at he points at the WRONG end of the ship, LOL. Granted some ships have the theater at the aft but it has been way over 20 years since this.
the only thing they are missing is a telescoping boom crane to load in from ... then they won care if there is a crane or not ... all they need is to get the supplies under the doorway
I find the ship interesting, but a cruise on a cruise ship is really the absolute last thing I'd ever want to do.
Idk why so many people hate on cruises it's not that bad. It's just a floating luxury hotel.

@@xXSinForLifeXx I think a lot of people assume it's wall to wall people all the time in a very confined space. I really don't think they understand just how HUGE these ships are. They are floating cities. Multiple venues, tons of eateries, pools, theaters, etc etc. It's entirely possible to never see many of the passengers more than once.
@Patryn71 Yeah if you avoid the buffet and the pool you will not find much of a crowd. No more than any other hotel or city venue atleast.
@@xXSinForLifeXx A floating monument to excessive consumerism. Ugly, massive eye-sore. Environmental catastrophy. Ruins coastal communities. They're awful. I can't think of a less imaginative way to waste quite a lot of money for a holiday. At least they're good pieces of engineering.

The one thing I'm wondering is why didn't they just build those doors into both sides of the ship so it wouldn't matter which side was docking and they could still load easily?
How fast they forget that these floating plague ships and environmental disasters are.

So much extra thought has to go into how to make this work for a vessel at sea.
And as an engineer, this is fascinating...
However, as a consumer... why go through all that effort, when during the entire event, i won't even notice i'm at sea... and really complex systems are actively trying to ensure that.
Which begs the question: just why at sea, when you can do the exact same on land, for a fraction of the price, and a fraction of the environmental impact?
I am positive this is the only cruise I would consider. Wandering the completed ship with Adam, Super Cool.

Another amazing upload. Having never been on a cruise, but have seen videos of performances given on them and it never dawned on me that you have to get all that equipment in there. Especially when most of these theaters are deep in the ship. Thanks for the insight and exposure to something I've never even thought of! 👍🏻

After reading these comments, a video from Adam is not the problem lol. Most people watching these likely won't even go on a cruise to begin with. If there's an issue it's with the much more wealthy, which would probably go on a cruise whether they saw this video or not
I recently got the opportunity to talk to some of the team making the props for Beetlejuice and a bunch of other shows, and they mentioned that the cruise version if Beetlejuice is really in depth and even has some crazier props than the Broadway show

I recently installed that set on the Norwegian V!va! It's naturally a physically scaled down version from the touring version we built right before that (and the Broadway version they're both based on), but it's got a few extra things too! I sadly don't get to see the performance itself, but with all the crazy technology onboard that ship I'm sure it's quite fun!
I wonder if they have a time lapse set up of the total construction. It would be cool to see that
The coolest think about the Sun Princess is it's literally too big to fail and absolutely unsinkable.

Yeah, I'm getting kind of annoyeed. The envornmental and socioeconomical destruction that cruises and cruises participate in is actually gross.
Fundamentally the content is pretty similar to his MET armor content. Adam talking with professionals about impressive feats. In this case it's modern ships and in the MET videos it's historical smithing.
Cruise ships aren't great environmentally, but there's no denying that they are impressive feats of engineering.
@@Lavaman_E89 Absolutely, they are impressive, the content is actually interesting. We could use those amazing engineers and resources towards so many more meaningful and not harmful causes.
@@Lavaman_E89 I think the MET armor content fits the channel perfectly since it appeals to the makers that inhabit this channel. The content gives a ton of ideas to anyone who wants to create their own armor. It also fits in well with the series Adam did where he worked on an armor he had created.
This cruise ship content is just crass commercialism. IMO.

How much of this design was tested in real working conditions before put on a cruise ship? With this much investment I doubt the function was all theoretical.
