To any new Persona fans, I'll say this. Until you've beaten the games you're interested in, IGNORE THE FANBASE! Not everyone is like this but, like any other fanbase, you always run the risk of finding someone who either loves to trash on the game you love or spoil the crap out of it. Now as for my order, I would agree Persona 4 is the best start followed by Persona 2, either of them. The order doesn't matter. In my experience, those who don't play an original Persona game early on, tend to find it harder to get into which is a shame because they are good games. So I would suggest either of the Persona 2s just for a taste to see if they like it. After that, the order is up to them
For anyone looking in the comments to this video in 2024 and onward. I would suggest playing Persona 3 Reload first. It stays faithful to the original P3 while using a lot of what made P5 amazing. The UI and new battle mechanics have been changed to look and feel like what we love from P5. It is VERY beginner friendly and really fun.
@@Sebastian-ov9mz Yeah now that Reload's out, definitely has my vote. P3 is already great from a story perspective and now it has great gameplay and graphics to match
Here's the order I played them in: 3 > 4 > 5 > 1 > 2. Overall, I agree that 4 is probably the best place to start for _just Persona_ . But if you think you might become interested in Megami Tensei as a whole down the line, I think Persona 3 (vanilla or FES) is a better starting place. It's around the difficulty of most Megaten games in my opinion. You'll learn a lot of good habits to have for most SMT games without becoming dependent on the handicaps 4 and 5 give you. If you can beat Persona 3, then you can definitely handle most Megaten games.
Persona 3 at normal and hard is more difficult than any SMT game actually. The difficulty was dumbed down, by Persona standards at least, in P4 and when Catherine came out fans were demanding for a "P3 level of challenge" despite the fact the game wasn't a JRPG. But when Catherine came out in Japan, the highest difficulty mode in the game was way too brutal and they had to patch it to make it less frustrating. Still immensely difficult, though. Most of the SMT games in Hard Mode are easier than P3 in normal mode. I'm not counting the useless P3 Portable which is an embarrassing version of the game.
@@FuzzyDlop I wasn't insinuating that Persona 3 was hard though. On normal mode, I think it's moderately challenging (which is how I view most of the Megaten games I've played personally).
I personally believe they fit into two trilogies, and you'll wanna start with 3, 4, and 5 in any order you want before trying the other trilogy, being 1, 2:IS, and 2:EP. The 3/4/5 trilogy are not just the most accessible ones to play, but also have fantastic stories that just about anyone can enjoy. Plus, there's a whole plethora of spin-offs to keep your attention after just these three. The trilogy of 1/2:IS/2:EP is one that you'd wanna take interest in on your own accord, and 1 is especially not for everyone; if you don't wanna play them, you most likely won't.
Agree that the first 3 games aren't for the current generations, since the format in terms of storytelling and gameplay is way too different. Atlus might not have remakes for the first games due to legal reasons, since the old creators left Atlus years ago, narrative reasons, and main objective is to move the story forward through spin off continuation stories and mainlines. For now Persona 4 Golden is the most accessible due to the addition of Steam port, which will be the best starting point of the neo generation series. Likely down the road, the future mainlines and continuation stories might have simultaneous worldwide release like SMT5, with multiplatforms, since they recently have recruit requirements of operating Unreal Engine. For the P5 gen games, playing Royal version will help in understanding Strikers and potentially, more continuation stories. So far some players noticed the pattern of both games; redhair girls assigned Arcana are the theological virutes within the visconti tarot, adult males under non-standard Arcana, both scenarios are caused by mass cognition researchers. Some of the story concepts in Strikers uses the unused concepts within Royal; viewing the targets past, the reason of the distortion. Assuming you’ve never played any of the games. Because the style of gameplay is very different. And Q is a little similar to P1 and 2. So it might make the transition a little easier

I believe that persona 5’s tutorial is better than 4s because yes, 5’s tutorials on how to fight can take long but you’re immediately put into the story and fighting. In 4 you have to sit through 3 hours of dialogue before heading into just the main story and not even the gameplay yet. Though it does take a little bit for players in 5 to be able to do their own thing and what they want to do besides fighting palaces so it’s your preference really.
Ay let’s go you got sponsored 👍👍👍👍so as a persona veteran I would say if you got a Ps3 or psvita they are pretty much set to play most of the persona games existing, I also started at persona 5 and I dropped it after the first 5 hours😂but I picked it back up and trust me once you unlock the 4th party member the game gets really good, persona 3 is my favorite but I played the P3P version and really loved but it for sure the hardest in my opinion out of all the ones I’ve played

Thanks for this video! I never finished Persona 5 Vanilla and at 4:20 what you said was very relatable... I also made the mistake of trying to follow a guide to help me pick the "best" decision and that took the fun factor out for me. I really want to get into this series because I love the music so much. Thinking about picking up Persona 4 Golden since it's $13 on the PS5 right now. And if that game can get me hooked, hopefully I can finish that and then play Persona 5 again.
I think it depends on the player: I started with P1 knowing before hand it wasn't as the latest entries and enjoyed quite a bit, but that's because I've been playing videogames for years and RPG are some of the titles I enjoy the most too. If you're new to videogames, or if RPG aren't your genre of choice, then P5 or P4 are easily the way to go
I played P1 a looong time ago, dropped it, and much later picked up P5R. That led me on an SMT III (x3)-P3-SMT IV-SMT-P4G-SMT IVA rampage. So hey, I guess it worked!
Thanks David, I have P5R on switch/ps4 enjoying it more on switch due to portability and now own P4 Golden. Very excited to play 4G. I love JRPGs such as FE but Atlus has this special charm to it IMO. Love your content and subscribed to your channel.
To be honest my first reaction after the tutorial is that how the hell did i miss this great game i used to play jrpgs on gba emulator and playing got me hooked im on my way on 3rd playthrough for royal
I started with Persona 3 FES cause my dumbass thought the neo persona games were connected until my brother told me that I was wrong. Didn't regret it cause P3 was amazing! I then went to play Persona 1 and I thought it was ok... Hoping to start the Persona 2 duology after I beat Nocturne and SMT V. Edit: I also just remembered I tried Persona 5 Royal but later dropped it because I got bored with it after the first dungeon. Need to come back to that game too.
The first dungeon in persona 5 was really tedious and annoying. What realllly was enjoyable was futaba and madarames palaces. I really think that after you finish persona 2 duology that you should give P5R a try again.
1:09 Exactly what I was hoping and expecting to see Persona 4 Golden is definitely the best entry-point to the series. I wish that was how I got into Persona and not from Vanilla P5 cause man, P5 is awesome then playing the amazing P4G before playing P3 heavily spoils the player with all the gameplay mechanic upgrades and even how the game itself operates in the newer Persona entries compared to P3, making P3 a more tedious game by comparison since it's gameplay style is essentially neutered by comparison to P4 & P5, while (to me) it allows games like P1 and the P2 duology to stand out and maybe even be more accessible to a newcomer of the Persona series compared to anyone starting with P3. Great video once again bro!!! 💯
There's nothing neutered in P3 compared to P4 and 5 other than the dungeon design in P5 and obviously the graphics and visuals. The game is way more difficult and tactical and has tough choices to make not present in 4 and 5. 5 also lacks the after school activities of 3 and 4. I can play P3 today even after playing 5 because P3 is still the best. No problems whatsoever as long as it's not the terrible PSP version.
I played the games backwards, starting with vanilla p5, p4g, p3 fes, then p2 is. Since for p2 I had to use emu, I kinda stopped in hopes they port it to modern consoles and PC. but that was my play order and in retrospect, my recommended play order. While I get starting with P4, a lot of people will look at it and go ew (it's a shame but that's how people judge games these days). If you start with p5, you will have more incentive to go back to the older games, at least that's how it was for me.
Yeah I think the p5 games are the best in the series (bc of designed dungeons), but being stuck on PlayStation systems means less people get to play them. So I guess p4 is more accessible because it’s on pc now, but I’m still hoping they port p5 to pc soon.
My very first persona game was p5 vanilla, then I played p3 fes, p5r came out on my birthday so I had to buy it and play it, I then finally played p4 golden, and lastly I’m going through p2 innocent sin. I have yet to play eternal punishment or p1
it's worth pointing out, if you want to play the best version of Persona 3, the up to date Persona 3 reload is the best version so far, and the best part is. it's more similar to Persona 3 Fez, rather than P3P Portable. they released that one to, but avoid the Portable version as it doesn't include the cutscenes at all. some content is also missing, other than that Persona 5, 4, and Persona 3 Reload are the best to play.
So P3F is actually a different gameplay then P3P as P3P Is literally based persona 4 Which is pretty obvious when you can make stuff dizzy As well as balancing physical. Unlike p3f Where you lose the turn For just been down. My play order: 5R (if you can't 4G) 4G or 3F (3f never play that first) or Depending on options 5S 1 2
Honestly 5 is a good start as any for a modern player to get into the persona series. If they like it then they can go for 3 and 4. I would avoid person 1 and 2 as it's heavily outdated and the combat system is a bit...shit. I started on 5 and got instantly hooked and wanted more so I played in the order of 3 and 4 and even went to the 1st and 2nd games just to get more persona. If you really enjoy the franchise that much and can bare with the heavily outdated systems of the first two games then you could play those two as the story is still pretty darn good
i played ike 10 min of persona 5 and i got overwhelmed that i searched the order i should play persona on it literaly got directly into action that i got confused
I started getting into the the persona game when Joker was added to super smash bros ultimate. I got P5 only to learn that P5R was coming out really soon. So I held off on P5 until royal came out and I really enjoyed P5R. I’m currently going through it again on my Nintendo switch.
I got into persona my senior year of hs in 2020 I played the games in complete reverse lol so 5,4,3,2,1 and personally I don’t consider that way it wasn’t bad but it def would have been cooler to play from beginning, but for those who aren’t so attached to older ps1 games wouldn’t maybe click with persona 1-2 as much since there very different from 3-5 I agree 4 would be a perfect starting game for the perfect murder mystery theme as well! I think 3 would make a really good introduction to the series as well as fes is my fav game in the series
Persona 5, 4, or 3 if you want to play one of tbhose Optimal Version for each is Persona 5 Tactica (The only good one) Persona 4 Golden (Get a fog restoration mod if you want) Persona 3 Reload OR Persona 3 Portable if you want to play the female route (Just don't date the 10 year old)
I remembered as a newcomer two years ago, my list were:P3FES(The Journey), P4G, P5, P3FES(The Answer: I gave up at last boss stage),P2 Eternal Punishment(it was hard as hell in my opinion so I gave up after 10 hours play). Still hope to play P5R so much but I don't have PS4. But is it true, there's a leak about P5R coming to PC? I hope It'll be true :)

@@DavidCastJRPGs How much are they usually if you buy them at the e-shop or physical copy? Sorry for asking silly questions but I just need a new game series to try beside Fire Emblem
my play order was 3-1-2-5-4 (played 4 after 5 for reasons) and my recommendation is starting with 4 then go to 3 then play 5 because of the gameplay mechanics 3 fes has better combat than 4 with having an extra phsical element and with fusion spells so playing 4 after 3 can bore you and i put 5 for the last because it has more mechanics and detailed velvet room systems such as gallows and electric chair. Btw you can play persona 1 and 2 any order you want just think of them as a smt game with a great story not a persona game and you'll be ok
I’d give the nod to P5, but in terms of accessibility P4 is the best starting point Btw huge Nostalgia from Dragon City, I used to play it a while ago on Facebook
persona 2 was a pain to finish.. it's basically the same game with differents characters. Persona 1 I liked the gameplay and the mood until I got the bad ending and gave up.. ç-ç
I hope im not to late, but the 3,4, and 5 stories are not connected in any way. Atlus likes to put in some funny easter eggs that mention characters from other games, but that wont spoil a single thing for you. If you start with persona 4, you can see a bunch of persona 4 references in persona 5 :p its pretty nice to look at
I've been a fan of the Persona series from when I first played Persona 3 FES in 2016 on my PS3. Was blown away by the story, characters and gameplay as this was also my first time playing a SMT type game. After I beat the journey and the answer; I saw P4G on the vita and played that, and I was even more so impressed at the massive quality of life improvements that were fixed! When I beat the main story and extra campaign, I tried my had at 1 & 2...1 I beat but it ook me a while, but 2 on the other hand was too slow for me and I gradually lost interest. Then 5 came along and blew a breath of fresh style into my PS3 and I loved it...I definitely agree with your choices!
So I started with p5 royal and it was fantastic. Then I continued with strikers because I couldn’t find the other mainline games. Afterwards I discovered smt and beat the nocturne hd remaster. After, I found out there were many megaten games digitally available on ps3 for cheap so now I am playing p3fes and will do digital devil saga next.
The big plot twist in 5 will lose alot of its punch if you haven't got a good familiarity with Igor going into the game. I'd say, at least start with 4 before playing 5, Preferably 4 and 3 before 5. 5 is still a really good game and it stands on its own. But coming into 5 with 3 and 4 under your belt is like reading Hobbit before Lord of the Rings. It gives more flavor
The only games that are connected are Persona 1, Persona 2 IS and Persona 2 EP. But you don't have to play P1 to get P2 it's just got 1 recurring character called Yukino.
@@njcholasng P5 Royal is the game you're looking for. P5 Strikers is a spinoff that takes place after P5R and is a crossover with the Dynasty Warriors series

another reason to play persona 4 first is because if you want to play persona 3 later, you wont be dissapointed by the graphics. No shade to p4,p3,p2,and p1 but we all know that persona 5s graphics are better.
Yeah, I started with 5, and was really disappointed with the dungeon crawling, and lack of qoL in 4. But still, 4 is still a phenomenal game. Can't really get into 3 though.
@@ofilosofoouumfumante5655 Not back then when I played P3 FES for the first time. That was emulated on PC. Back then, a jailbreak hadn't yet been released for the software version i had on my vita and pstv. These days, of course.
@@memesfact1552 I I've tried to play the 3 OGs. I started with P2 Innocent Sin PSP version, and played the first couple of hours, but it didn't grab me like P3, P4, P5 did. @@mark_delight yeah the PC is the best way to play these games when I played persona 4 on pcsx2 after playing it on PS3 i was completely stunned by the improved graphics
That is because until June of last year the only places you could buy it was the PS2 and the vita most everyone has a computer that is capable of playing this game now so that changes things a bit
My recommended starting point would be P5 Royal or P5 cause many newcomers might be turned off by the graphics in P4 and P3. Meanwhile graphics aren’t really an issue in P5
While I don't like Persona 3, I think it's best played after Persona 4. I think you should go P4G, P3F/P, then P5R, then either P1 PS1 or P2IS PS1. PSP Makes it too easy for P2, and P1 is too hard on PSP (especially those encounters....)

Started on Persona on Persona 3: FES and loved it.
So, Persona 3 and 4 are available for PS5 now
1:09 Exactly what I was hoping and expecting to see
Persona 4 Golden is definitely the best entry-point to the series.
@@FuzzyDlop The fact that anyone can defend the trash combat in P3 when compared to how amazing the combat is in P4 and P5 is beyond me.
Persona 5 royal is what made me aware of the persona series and I've started playing it I'm about 35 hours in and already love persona
I wish he covered Persona 3 Reload. 🙁 (I know he posted this before it was announced)
Reload is a fantastic entry point! 😁
I have yet to play eternal punishment or p1
gonna grab 4 golden and 3 portable on steam, then wait for christmas sales for other parts :D
looks like i will enjoy these
Thx for the video :)
it's worth pointing out, if you want to play the best version of Persona 3, the up to date Persona 3 reload is the best version so far, and the best part is. it's more similar to Persona 3 Fez, rather than P3P Portable. they released that one to, but avoid the Portable version as it doesn't include the cutscenes at all. some content is also missing, other than that Persona 5, 4, and Persona 3 Reload are the best to play.
Its prolly the closest games with will get to a new Suikoden Series really good integration with all characters
Welllll I guess Atlus sure did deliver with these announcements ;)
So P3F is actually a different gameplay then P3P as P3P Is literally based persona 4 Which is pretty obvious when you can make stuff dizzy As well as balancing physical. Unlike p3f Where you lose the turn For just been down.
My play order:
5R (if you can't 4G)
4G or 3F (3f never play that first) or Depending on options 5S
1
2
Honestly 5 is a good start as any for a modern player to get into the persona series. If they like it then they can go for 3 and 4. I would avoid person 1 and 2 as it's heavily outdated and the combat system is a bit...shit. I started on 5 and got instantly hooked and wanted more so I played in the order of 3 and 4 and even went to the 1st and 2nd games just to get more persona. If you really enjoy the franchise that much and can bare with the heavily outdated systems of the first two games then you could play those two as the story is still pretty darn good
Persona 2 Duology favourite forever!
i played ike 10 min of persona 5 and i got overwhelmed that i searched the order i should play persona on
it literaly got directly into action that i got confused
Persona 5, 4, or 3 if you want to play one of tbhose
Optimal Version for each is
Persona 5 Tactica (The only good one)
Persona 4 Golden (Get a fog restoration mod if you want)
Persona 3 Reload OR Persona 3 Portable if you want to play the female route (Just don't date the 10 year old)
There’s only persona 5 tactica there’s no royal
@@Namori_30 real
I've played 3 ,4 and 5 in that order
I remembered as a newcomer two years ago, my list were:P3FES(The Journey), P4G, P5, P3FES(The Answer: I gave up at last boss stage),P2 Eternal Punishment(it was hard as hell in my opinion so I gave up after 10 hours play). Still hope to play P5R so much but I don't have PS4. But is it true, there's a leak about P5R coming to PC? I hope It'll be true :)
TLDR. play persona 1 before 2 and IS before EP. the rest is up to you but P5R is probably the easiest start
Sorry silly question what is Persona game about I know it’s an anime for sure and also if I were to start playing could I start playing the game on my switch or PS4?
Absolutely! persona 3 portable, persona 4 golden & persona 5 royal are available on Nintendo Switch & PS4! Its a single player rpg series! :)
@@DavidCastJRPGs How much are they usually if you buy them at the e-shop or physical copy? Sorry for asking silly questions but I just need a new game series to try beside Fire Emblem
@@SpenceyJay not sure about the price in your region but they all go on sale very frequently for fairly cheap!
@@DavidCastJRPGs That’s good to know fairly cheep sounds like a good deal and I am Canadian just like you are lol 😂
my play order was 3-1-2-5-4 (played 4 after 5 for reasons) and my recommendation is starting with 4 then go to 3 then play 5 because of the gameplay mechanics 3 fes has better combat than 4 with having an extra phsical element and with fusion spells so playing 4 after 3 can bore you and i put 5 for the last because it has more mechanics and detailed velvet room systems such as gallows and electric chair. Btw you can play persona 1 and 2 any order you want just think of them as a smt game with a great story not a persona game and you'll be ok
I’d give the nod to P5, but in terms of accessibility P4 is the best starting point
Btw huge Nostalgia from Dragon City, I used to play it a while ago on Facebook
How do you play Dragon City on Facebook? Is it like playing Persona 5 on TH-cam?
@@eitanr Long time ago, I used to play it on Facebook.
@@sergiosalazar8702 Did you play Dragon City with Facebook controls and graphic settings? Does Facebook have DC keybinds like TH-cam has P5 keybinds?
Thank you
persona 2 was a pain to finish.. it's basically the same game with differents characters. Persona 1 I liked the gameplay and the mood until I got the bad ending and gave up.. ç-ç
Funky student approves this video 👍
Nice hair bro eheh
I'm curious, are the stories interconnected? I'm afraid to jump into p4 cuz I might miss something that happened on the previous games.
I hope im not to late, but the 3,4, and 5 stories are not connected in any way. Atlus likes to put in some funny easter eggs that mention characters from other games, but that wont spoil a single thing for you. If you start with persona 4, you can see a bunch of persona 4 references in persona 5 :p its pretty nice to look at
@@aanya-tl9pl Thank you! And no, you're just in time as I'm just about to finish zero escape lmao
So basically for a new player i should do p4g then p3 reload then p5 royal it seems.
I played them 5>3>2>1>4.
That was just how life took me, I very clearly didn’t plan any of that.
Life delivery us to the same end equally
I did not plan that too
The big plot twist in 5 will lose alot of its punch if you haven't got a good familiarity with Igor going into the game.
I'd say, at least start with 4 before playing 5, Preferably 4 and 3 before 5.
5 is still a really good game and it stands on its own. But coming into 5 with 3 and 4 under your belt is like reading Hobbit before Lord of the Rings. It gives more flavor
I’ve played and beat every persona game except p1 and P2 IS EP and p4 Arena . if atlus could remake or remaster these I could love the series
Are the story and characters unique in each game, or do latter games build off previous ones?
The only games that are connected are Persona 1, Persona 2 IS and Persona 2 EP. But you don't have to play P1 to get P2 it's just got 1 recurring character called Yukino.
So for a new player with persona franchise, can i start with persona 5?
Certainly!
@@DavidCastJRPGs but what is the different between P5 royal and P5 strikers?
@@njcholasng P5 Royal is the game you're looking for. P5 Strikers is a spinoff that takes place after P5R and is a crossover with the Dynasty Warriors series
@@cleverman383 thank mate, i bought it and worth every penny
are they still enjoyable if you watch oeople play??? bc I have a trash pc, no other consoles and stuff. and i cant buy anything either
Persona 4 Golden needs to come to the PS4 and Switch so I can played it
i saw somewhere that theyre planning to make a switch version for p4g!!! Maybe this year or next year
I've just finished my playthroughs of the SNES Megami Tensei games
Is it still a bad idea if I play Persona 1 before 2, 3, 4, 5?
What I do for the Loonaverse 😩
Can play 3 portable, 4 gold, 5 Royal on xbox one. I thought you would have said 3 wouls be good start. Only played little of begining of 3 and 4 and 3 seemed like better story starting I thought. Don't know what is going on ib any of the yet.
another reason to play persona 4 first is because if you want to play persona 3 later, you wont be dissapointed by the graphics.
You should also watch Persona Trinity soul

I started with P3 FES emulated, then I bought a vita and PSTV to play P4G, then played P5.
Did you cracked your vita to play P3 fes?
Then P1 and P2
@@ofilosofoouumfumante5655 Not back then when I played P3 FES for the first time. That was emulated on PC. Back then, a jailbreak hadn't yet been released for the software version i had on my vita and pstv. These days, of course.
@@memesfact1552 I
I've tried to play the 3 OGs. I started with P2 Innocent Sin PSP version, and played the first couple of hours, but it didn't grab me like P3, P4, P5 did. After that, I decided that I would play the first 3 as soon as the fan translation for P2 Eternal Punishment PSP version is completed. So, one day.
@@mark_delight yeah the PC is the best way to play these games when I played persona 4 on pcsx2 after playing it on PS3 i was completely stunned by the improved graphics
I must say that the majority of persona fan start with p5 so i think you're wrong piking p4 over p5
That is because until June of last year the only places you could buy it was the PS2 and the vita most everyone has a computer that is capable of playing this game now so that changes things a bit
@@mrcat4508 actually no
My recommended starting point would be P5 Royal or P5 cause many newcomers might be turned off by the graphics in P4 and P3. Meanwhile graphics aren’t really an issue in P5
I’m starting with p3 because I could get it on Xbox game pass
my only advise is to NOT start persona 2 ep before doing both persona 2 is and persona 1
Persona 5 Royal is my favorite game of all time and persona 4 Golden is in my top 5 and persona 3 would probably be in like my top 15
Persona 4 Golden is the best game.
Person Q?
While I don't like Persona 3, I think it's best played after Persona 4.
I think you should go P4G, P3F/P, then P5R, then either P1 PS1 or P2IS PS1. PSP Makes it too easy for P2, and P1 is too hard on PSP (especially those encounters....)
I have a suggestion 😎 be based😎 and play smt or doom eternal😎 dating is for wooshie gamers😎 persona uwu😡
@@goroakechi2216 umm i guess the emojis crearly translates that this is a joke
P4G is just way too easy. Play the original
All i gotta say now is, THANK YOU XBOX
