    STILL rocking the 2500k in February 2019. It's a beast.

      thescinema I have a stock 2500 and thinking of buying a K to overclock. My computer is still running find, but I’d like M2 SSD capability. The price of a new CPU/Mobo when they’re not that far ahead is hard to swallow

    • @richr161
      @richr161 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevebean1234 They're not far ahead? In this test the top end is nearly 50% faster. That's excellent for cpu performance and that's only in 2017.
      Now you can get a 6/12 thread 3600 cpu and get 50-60%+ for $200-400 and be good for another 8-9 years.

    • @stevebean1234
      @stevebean1234 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      richr161 not for the games I play. Multi threading is nearly useless for them, so stacking cores won’t do me much good. I think I may benefit from modern RAM and M2 SSD speeds, but having to buy those along with a $150 CPU and $150 MoBo is borderline more than I want to spend. Haven’t decided yet.

    • @richr161
      @richr161 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@stevebean1234What games are those? Mostly everything uses more than 4/4 threads.
      Also min framerates matter. I had a 2500k excellent chip good framerate, but the min framerate was suffering. The biggest difference i noticed from upgrading was games were smoother not just higher frame rates.
      Also its a moot point if you have a 60hz monitor as basically any cpu can push most games to that frame rate. no reason to buy a cpu.

      Tech Wiz Master well I can tell you that the 290x is holding well. My MSI 290x is getting locked 60fps ultra at 1440p on pretty much most modern games. An exception for me is GTA V where I run it on high settings and it stays at 60fps most the time. Apart from in the city but I think my i5 3570k is bottlenecking there. But would love to see a more extensive look at it.

      Grant Hogan mine stays pretty cool if it's not running an overclock. But once I bump the core to 1150mhz it hits around 87 degrees and if I play for long enough it'll slowly go up to 94 degrees especially in summer.

      In terms of reducing temperature google for better performing thermal paste and stuff like "delid CPU", "CPU heatsink/die lapping", "all-in-one watercoolers". All this stuff is pretty cheap to achieve but it needs a little bravery to treat a fragile cpu like that.
      Coming from a guy who just beheaded his i5-3570k and runs 4.8ghz on air O;O
      Ofcourse you'll find a lot of youtube videos on this also.

      And people are questioning why PC sales are declining. Calling it "PC is dead"
      It's just that people already have a machine that is good enough. Except for the extreme enthusiasts, gamers are fine with the performance of a 4 year old chip. And the PC gaming market is growing.

    With Vulcan and DX12 there are even less reasons to upgrade.

    • @GamersNexus
      @GamersNexus  7 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      That's not really true. Most of the games we've been working with are not that reliable with either new API just yet. DOOM is an exception, most the time. BF1 has issues with frametimes at the low-end, so it doesn't much matter what CPU or GPU you have as the implementation is so poor.

    • @Simon74
      @Simon74 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Gamers Nexus You can't blame the CPU for Devs f*cking up their API implementation.
      Also using an AMD GPU will help a lot with DX12 and Vulcan.
      You should test CPU Bottlenecks in Low-Level-APIs with some GPUs actully! :)

      +Gamers Nexus not really in the topic, but have you tested GTX 1060/Rx 480 with current i3 processors?
      Usually, you isolate one component, like CPU in this video and maximize the other (GTX 1080 here) and it is hard to find mid-range + mid-range combo.

      Razor2048 As much as I like this processor family, I can understand why they wouldn't review it. Despite it being an unlocked 6 core CPU, the Phenom II X6 lacks support for all modern instruction sets. It is also outperformed or matched by the Piledriver FX series and Sandy Bridge Core series. Given how aged those processors are, it makes sense to leave the Phenoms in the dust.

Because these newer processors have far faster memory, and older reviews that I've seen pointed out that a DDR3 memory overclock to 2133mhz or higher had a bigger impact on FPS in most games than the overclocking the CPU clock for a 2500k.

But what I really like to point out, is the effort you're putting into each and every video and article you're releasing. This is insane!

In some cases CPU limits 1070, in other video card limits my 2500K, but all the time I'm getting dead on 60hz with V-Sync option. • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Zen is a peaceful meditative philosophy, something that hardly conjures images of high performance, you want your CPU to punch through your tasks, not meditate on them taking its time. Ryzen sounds like Phoenix rising from the ashes, something curiously apt for what this processor *has* to do for AMD CPU division in its current state. I think Ryzen is a uniquely good marketing name.
      But still, if i get a Ryzen (super likely, i really want affordable and fast 8 cores), i'll keep calling it Zen. The name just warms my heart and will give me patience for inevitable delays, bugs, excuses, and performance munching microcode hotpatches, if AMD's history if anything to go by. And for occasional waiting for CPU to wake up and do its thing - i expect sleepy power management from AMD, but perhaps it'll actually be good this time.
      Don't have a strong opinion on NX vs Switch, Switch may be a bit mundane, but i guess it's descriptive. If i were to get one (unlikely), i'll just call it The Thing. Or the Nintendo Gameplet. I don't have a TV, but good games on the go would be useful.

    Z77 boards offered a lot of the features that were cited here as missing from Z68. Obviously Z77 came out in 2012, alongside the 3rd Gen i5/i7. Z77 boards support M.2, PCI-E 3.0, (sometimes) faster RAM, etc... Being able to run DDR3 2133/2400 with an overclocked 3rd gen i5/i7 still gives pretty competitive performance.

      sth. to remember here is that the i5 2500k was the clever choice well into the next generation the i5 35..k had overheating issues due to intel's first implementation of shit thermalpaste.
      thus a lot of clever people bought z77 motherboards with sandybridge like myself still running this setup.

    • @cataria3903
      @cataria3903 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      *****
      there are a lot of forum posts about overheating i5 3570s solved by changing thermal paste between chip and heatspreading the issue gets huge once u exceed a certain level of thermal output, where the thermal paste just can't deliver more to the headspreader so shit starts to overheat real quick.
      i would assume the 4,2 ghz at stock cooler and what i assume is stock voltage will be below that.
      i'm running my i5 2500k at 4.4 ghz 1,356 v.
      69 degrees celsius absolute (48 delta) in blend test 10 minutes, nh-d14. readout with realtemp/cpu-z
      what do u mean 68-70 did u run prime 95 blend test (i was told to run blend test, because it taxes the memory controller way more), but it is also intel burn test stable.

    who is okay with 30- 60 fps. will be happy with a 2500k/2600k/3570k for the next 3-4 maybe 5 years. considering 4k 60 fps gameplay the gap between will be waaaaaaaay smaller because achieving 60 fps is for the actual graphicscards quite a problem. and as we can see those older cpus have no problem with 60 fps...

    in other words: zen, we need you...

    • @GamersNexus
      @GamersNexus  7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      We visit each unit individually. If we OC'd the 2600K, everyone would ask for an overclocked 4690K, 6600K, 4790K, etc. That doubles the workload to a point of taking multiple days per CPU. The 2600K will be overclocked individually, just like the 7700K and 2500K were. We add one new test each time to iterate on the foundation.

    • @Flaimbot
      @Flaimbot 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the way the test is executed makes it useless in the first place. the only thing it shows is that at stock (seriously, which enthusiast cares about stock performance...) there are performance "improvements", which is obvious as the clocks went up to the former oc-values.
      tinfoil hat time: you're sponsored by intel and don't want to lose their monniez, so you present their products in a way that doesn't make it seem like they haven't done anything - which they did.

    • @GamersNexus
      @GamersNexus  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We overclocked the 2500K. We are not sponsored by Intel in any way. I bought (with GN's money) every CPU on that bench except the 7700K, which was loaned to us by a motherboard manufacturer.

      Flaimbot Sees data that makes a company's product look good -> immediately assumes the person presenting the data is being payed off by that company. JUST STOP IT ALREADY. FFS, it seems like literally every single PC hardware video I watch now has a comment below it accusing the youtuber of being payed off by the company to make their product look good, or make someone else's product look bad. If you want to spend an entire month running tests on a dozen different CPUs both stock and OC, across a dozen different benchmarks, go ahead and do it yourself.

  • @mrmariomantube

      Are you rendering on windows or linux?
      Because there is a huge difference in performance between linux and windows when it comes to blender. The ryzen render took around 35%-40% longer to render on windows than on linux. This might be worth checking out, especially if you render production stuff that takes multiple days to complete.

    I actually never got to see this 2500K Revisit from 20I7, when it first uploaded (in fact, the first program of Gamers Nexus that I watched during the latter half of the 20IX decade was "iBUYPOWER vs. Walmart System Build Review"), so to look at this episode truly shows how much the production quality and formula of Gamers Nexus evolved from its 2004/2005 Era G4tv template to its modern incarnation over the course of a matter of months, following the update to the GN Logo, Heads~up Display assets, Benchmark Table, and End Screen.
    To be truthful, if Gamers Nexus was around back when G4tv was existent (especially in its early years), this version of the show's production formula would've fit right in with what the network was offering at the time; it's not often that we see this design template and also the fonts of that era used in virtually any programming of the modern era, so it makes for a nice throwback, perhaps this could be revived for a future Anniversary program down the road to remind longtime viewers of what this series looked like in its earlier times? (:

    I went from the 2500k to the 6700k last month; huge (HUGE) improvements in games like World of Warcraft, MechWarrior: Online, and other MMO/online games - in order of dozens of FPS gain in every game. There's definitely some areas and titles that the upgrade made very little difference, but for the core applications and games that I run, it's a massive difference; people stating that the 2500k is not yet worth upgrading from were correct for a long time, but really, Skylake and up are substantial improvements.

This time I will be moving from my 2500k merely because I want to move up to higher resolutions and have access to newer mobo features like m.2. Steve Burke, when you test the Zen CPU's then please use coolers of a wide varying quality: midrange air coolers (ideally the Cryorig H7), highend air coolers (Noctua D15), highend AIO's and good custom water cooling loops. The entry level AIO's can be skipped, they perform less than even the midrange air coolers when the load (CPU) is high while being more noisy and much more expensive (not only the price, also the shorter lifespan and some added risks).
    We don't know yet how that automatic overclocking works, they might be more strict with regard to maximum temperatures and/or increasing voltages then what is usual amongst overclockers on the Intel platform, on the Intel platform you can easily sacrifice some of the lifespan of your CPU which is fine given that you don't use it much longer than 8 years anyway. People who buy a Zen CPU and motherboard need to know what cooler they should buy with regard to performance (and in my case also with regard to noise level). How much extra performance do you get? Is there a point after which you don't get extra performance because the scaling (frequency/voltage) is not good enough?
    We can pretty much find anything we want about the Intel platform but for AMD the database is empty, I hope that people like you will put more effort in testing the Zen CPU's then what they would do for the next iteration of Intel CPU's (basically a Skylake CPU with a higher base/boost, overclock and some new I/O - boring).

    There were a few CPUs and GPUs which have held on extremely well and I sort of regret buying the low-end Core i5 2400 back in the day, which started to show its age much sooner in games and when editing and transcoding video.
    One was the mentioned Core i5 2500K (open multiplyer for easy overclocking) and the Core i7 2600K (open multiplyer and hyperthreading). About ten years ago (god, do I feel old...) the Core 2 Quad Q6600 was providing an excellent "bang for your buck" ratio and could be overclocked for even more long-term performance.
    On the GPU side there was the Radeon HD 7970, which is still doing just fine in 1080p six years later. On the Nvidia side there was the GTX 970, which has given buyers little to no need for upgrading to today.
    So It's not always the best idea to save a few bucks buying the "good enough" mid-range hardware. Sure, it'll do its job just fine, but it'll age much faster and often lacks long-term support via more high-end features like DX 12 support. Like I said, my Core i5 2400 from 2011 aged much faster and my old R9 270X 2GB card really grew long in the tooth after about two years or so.

    I would be really interested to see how a 4.5 ghz 2600k would do in these tests.
    I also feel like 1440p results should be included in these tests, many people running high end hardware will have made the jump to it and CPU bottlenecking is much less of a worry factor there since the GPU is often the bottleneck.

    so, if you are running a sandy bridge cpu overclocked there is no need to upgrade, unless you are planing to play bf1 or any other games with 144fps (depending on settings). csgo and other esport titles will still run with more than 300fps, depending on the frequency of the ram, gpu and clock speed.
