Why did you compare this to the 1700? I saw another channel did that. I assume Intel told you guys to do it?
The 8700k is $380 and the motherboards are all $150-200. The 1800X is $390-400, with motherboards ranging from $90 (B350) to $200 (x370). The 1700 is down to about $250 and it just makes absolute no sense to compare these two. At least use a 1700X which is running right at $300, but I'd argue that's still not really apples to apples and is closer to the 8700(non-k).
This is a consumer product and price drives comparisons.

Charles Anderson the reason for the comparison to the 1700 is that it is by far the most logical choice for enthusiasts. You save $$ and you get nearly identical performance as the OC headroom is not much different.
Also, was the comparison late made with the cpu modded? Why didn't you provide results for both cases in all tests? Not everyone will delid their cpus.

Ryzen is about to get a 12nm/14nm+ refresh as well... so we are going to see bumped up clocks in around Christmas time to early Feburary or shortly there after for Ryzen.

technically intel has been selling 6 core 12 threads since 2010 with i7-970 for HEDT consumers first generation of core-i series. First Intel HEDT consumer 8 core 16 thread came out on 2014 via i7 5960x...

Big props for measuring turn time instead of fps in civ!!! You can tell most reviewers never played the game, any old shite CPU and GPu can ran it in 80fps.

Frankly, it's absurd that there is any kind of binning or overclocking lottery at all. They should have taken Ryzen's example and sold a 8700/8700k/8700x just like Ryzen has their 1700/1700x/1800x. With Ryzen, you at least know that if you spend more money you will get better overclocking.

Alot of people misunderstand this chip.
It's not supposed to be 15% faster than the 7700k in gaming; It's supposed to be slightly faster WHILE having so much more headroom to do other stuff too.
Though ironically, core hopping means sometimes it ends up slower, as shown in ROTR results.

I'd say i5 for enthusiast gaming, i7 for production and enthusiast gaming, and Ryzen for price/performance and so probably most people.
Except that makes no sense since locked i5 is cheaper than comparable Ryzen CPU, AND a good bit better in games. Intel is the clear winner for gamers. 8700k is the clear choice for gaming and productivity, since it beats even the 1700x in many multithreaded workloads.
Have you seen that power consumption? Not good at all compared to ryzen and the 7700k.

What the fuck are you talking about Carson? Power consumption is a complete non issue. It's barely higher than a 7700k, which is expected considering the 2 extra cores.
Sanctorum The 8400 boosts to 4Ghz which means a handful of FPS better than a 1600 at 4Ghz at 1080p, but up to 40% worse in production. You're better off buying into the longer life span of the B350 platform instead of locking yourself down with a non-overclocking motherboard that costs the same, or paying more for one that does overclock. Even aside from the platform, as games use more threads, the 1600 will end up outperforming the 8400.
The 8700K isn't better than an R7 in productivity either, it matches it, whilst costing more as far as the 1700 and 1700X are concerned. It's true that it's better in gaming, but that depends on the situation; if you've got up to a GTX 1070 or are playing at 1440p or 4K, if there's any extra FPS from the i7, ir probably won't justify the extra cost of it for most people. Even to add to that, the savings in buying say a 1700 over an 8700K could be the difference between a GTX 1080 and a GTX 1080 Ti which will ultimately yield more FPS.
Coffee Lake's for those who want to squeeze the maximum amount of FPS from their systems, and so for the majority Ryzen's the better buy overall.

Damien its because they are rushing. They take a skylake chip, add two more cores, cover in thermal paste and churn out. On top of this they introduce a new socket for 8-12months life span.
Then the intel fan boy army jump on you cause it has higher fps at 1080p (regardless of cost, power and heat).

I used my i5 2500K for 8½ years before i upgraded to a i7 8700K, the i5 2500K served me well, hopefully this i7 will serve me just as good.
Well, bought mine at launch and by now those 6 cores are getting absolutely pegged.
I might get a few more months out of this but it gave me over 2 years of great performance.
Now I just need this exact video but with the Ryzen chips all clocked at 3.9/4.0 and the Intel chips all clocked at 4.8-5.0. Especially the streaming tests where I presume the Ryzen 1700 would be clocking at only 3.0 on most cores and the 8700k would be clocking at only 3.7 all cores (not too sure).
The 8700K seems like it is a beast, but I am still going with the Ryzen 1700. I don't imagine putting anything more powerful than the GTX 1070 in my PC within the next 2-3 years, so the gaming performance gap won't be as big as shown here. Also, the 1700 comes with a cooler and has cheaper motherboards. I would be paying at least $100+ if I went with the 8700K.

why is everyone comparing it to stock ryzen 1700? this part of intel's agreement? i watched almost every review and almost every review is pitting i7-8700K OC to a Ryzen 1700 stock in benchmarks and charts.. like everyone is doing 1700 stock vs 8700K, not 1700X not 1800X not 1700 OC.. also people arent running bleeding edge ram with ryzen 1700, only review i seen listed ram used 3000mhz ram on a stock R7 1700 but 3200mhz ram on a OC i7-8700K.. im calling BS... wel all know 1700 at 4.0Ghz and 3200Mhz ram has huuuuge gains over stock and 3000Mhz ram, specially fully load the cpu up with heavy tasks like encoding + gaming. im not saying R7-1700 at 4.0Ghz in gaming alone will demolish a 8700K, no way, but when you're pushing things like encoding + gaming on cpu or something more intense, R7 at 4.0Ghz would demolish or at very least match 8700K depending on what was being pushed through the pipe line..... reviewers need to stop bending over for companies, 8700K is a great CPU, but all it is is a 6 core 12 thread Skylake cpu with a few microcode unlocks for some stuff.
Yeah, for the price, it should be against the 1800x with 3200Mhz RAM. Also, no one is mentioning that the 8700K only has 16 PCIe lanes. Ryzen has 24 on all their CPUs.

Intel has been encouraging sites to describe CFL as having 40 lanes, because Z370 has 24 from the chipset, but the link to the CPU is still only a single DMI 3.0 so adding the lanes number together is very misleading, it would imply CFL is akin to IB-E 4820K in lane provision which is crazy, 4-core 4820K can handle 4-way CF/SLI no problem (for 4x GPU for compute), CFL can't do that.
Don't get sucked down the PR rabbit hole of adding lanes direct from the CPU to those from chipset. :)
No, I have a Ryzen. It has zero lanes from the chipset. All lanes originate from the CPU. And there are 24 of them (it can actually do 32, but AMD removed 8 of them for cost reasons). 4 of those PCIe 3.0 lanes do go to the chipset and are split up into PCIe 2 lanes. I currently have 2 video card at x8 and an nvme drive at x4, all PCIe 3.0. That's 20 lanes right there at PCIe 3.0. I also have an x16 slot with x4 PCIe 2.0 lanes and three x1 slots with one PCIe 2.0 lane each. These PCIe 2 lanes are split from the last 4 PCIe 3.0 lanes from the CPU for a grand total of 24 PCIe 3.0 lanes or 27 lanes if you count all the lanes available for expansion.

Upgrading my 2500K to a 6700K was the best decision I have ever made. Kaby lake and Coffee lake are essentially the same as my Skylake with about a 10% improvement more or less. I see absolutely no need for me to upgrade to Coffee Lake.

i5 8400 vs R5 1600 = AMD wins in 99% of all real life tests.
i7 8700K vs R7 1800x = AMD wins in 99% of all real life tests.
Thats even truer now. It is true that Coffe Lakes availability has normalized, but AMD just dropped the price of the 1800X below the 8700K (at least thats the case here in germany), so AMD still holds the value, not to mention that you still only can buy Z370 boards while you can oc your 1800X (not that you need it) with a cheaper B350

Yes definitely great CPU but for my usage I'm waiting for 8c/16t consumer chips with high clocks and Chipsets with Wifi onboard. Mostly because my 4670K is still doing fine else I would grad a 8700K or 1700X
WarmSoftKitty Haswell -> Skylake(Kaby/Coffee are the same architecture) is almost no IPC improvement... So I would want a big Clock and/or Thread/Core count advantage so that would make Sense but I Plan on Building an ITX Build next Time and I dont Plan on paying over 2500 for Full system

HimTortons I value IPC and clocks over Threads After a certain Point so a 7820X would be the Most interesting to me on X299. But then again the mainboard Prices fit better for the i9 CPUs
Are we ever going to see overclocked streaming benchmarks? I feel that would help out a lot. With regards to Civ6 (or any civ) the game is optimized for 2 threads, so more than 2 threads will not help, after that it becomes a term of frequency.
Great job as always, the thing that surprised me with this was the overclocked 8700k drew more power than the 1950x stock. Ryzen power efficiency, woot.

Andrés Rázuri Linus did a price to performance chart for productivity. Check that one out. I'd say the r7 is good for the high end value though.

so then go ryzen bc you will be able to reuse the board and other components you use and upgrade the cpu. the only thing you may need to replace is the MB if, and IF, the ryzen+/2 moves to quad channel
re, Optimising for Streaming
What you want to do, especially with lots of cores available, is set the Core Affinity to make sure the Game isn't using the same cores as the streaming software.
A simple enough tweak in task manager, or you could make a bat file to start an application with a certain core affinity. (for example steam, which in turn will make any games steam launches, inherit the core affinities.)
I really think Core Affinity tweaks should be part of the comparisons, as it makes much more sense to do it that way, compared to Prioritization.
shouldve also tested with Vega LC for the gaming benchmarks as the Nvidia Cards dont show ryzen in its best light

Is an i7-8700k @ $360 a better deal in price to performance when MicroCenter sells the R5-1600x for $199.99 and the R7-1800x for $349.99.
I chose the 1600x, but it seems they are all good. AMD's resurgence is the best thing to happen to consumers and Intel fans in years.

what paper launch? Except for the i3 8350k, everything is now abundantly available here in the Philippines of all places (we always are the last priority most of the time in getting the latest tech). i3 8100, i5 8400, i5 8600k, i7 8700, i7 8700k can be easily bought in pc stores.

Meh...going for ryzen 7 1700.
1. Lower cost
2. Comes with the cooler wich can oc to 3.7 without problems.
3. It has 8 cores and is gr8 for multitask
4. It will do just fine for games
5. No need for fancy motherboard.
Many ignore the obvious point that at 1080p the frame rates are so high, most people will not care anyway. Indeed, unless one is a high frequency gaming fanatic (which sensitises one's vision to that kind of monitor anyway), just lock the screen at 60Hz vsync and it'll be smooth no matter what the CPU, with reduced power consumption, noise, etc.

Thank you Gamers Nexus for including turn times with games like Civilization VI that actually show the benefits of a faster CPU for these types of games. Too many reviewers review CPUs on games that simply don't tax the CPU, but instead tax the GPU... which isn't the hardware being reviewed.
Cores/thread counts not being supported... this is where the Intel bullshit has completely fracked us. Devs had absolutely no reason to bother with learning multithreading when duel/quad cores were mainstream. Now where 8c/16ct processors are reasonable, they will have to catch up. I still think Im going to go with 1700 OC'd for my next build, its still a compelling buy and I really don't want to reward Intel for their obvious foot dragging.

You can't really go by that survey.. the gamers market up until this year was mostly 4 core parts and devs knew this.
The reason for the number of 2 or 4 core machines can be attributed directly to Intel's laziness with advancing in this area, their pricing when they finally did, and the people who look at AMD with trepidation. This Ryzen line, either directly or indirectly, will go a long way in remedying this. People will either buy these excellent, cheap AMD cpus, or take advantage of the price beatdown they laid on Intel, causing a massive (although temporary and conditional) price cut. I expect Intel to creep their prices back up slowly, and when they do, maybe the devs will see the writing on the wall. Faster or not, AMD is making it possible for more and more people to get into gaming and modern PCs in general than ever before. And that's a good thing
Now, if we can get the price of a 1080ti down from $750, Id be even happier.

I forgot to mention this as I got myself sidetracked.. If you do go with a 1700 (or any ryzen), the cost savings of having a future upgrade path with AM4 is also compelling. There are at least 2 more Zen generations, likely more on AM4. With Intel, you're guaranteed to need a new (usually more expensive) MOBO with every upgrade. Just get the x370 chipset so you can OC and handle the new stuff yet to come. I bought a Crosshair VI Hero and couldn't be happier with it.
While great in theory and I'm sure it matter for some people I can't really care too much about AM4 as upgrade platform. I still have a 2500k (considering 8600/8700k now) and by the time I'll upgrade again AM5 will be there. :P
But who knows what I'll do then ofc. Could be a whole different world then. :)

Run 8700K overclocked against a stock clocked Ryzen. Seems fair. Core enhancement is on.

I love how so many media outlets ignore the i7-3970X sandybridge era extreme edition CPU. Probably afraid of it beating the 8700K in value and loosing sponsorships LUL. My 3970X clocks to 4.5Ghz on auto vcore and auto settings without any issues, I can push it to 4.8Ghz if I wanted to maybe even 5.0Ghz.
The 3970X has 6 core and 12 threads, and is based on the E5-1600 series of Xeons so it's actually fairly well optimized design and binning quality compared to the consumer grade i7's. The 3970X was a couple that came out for the enthusiast market for almost no reason, not because Intel had to make something, but rather just because they could... $200 today, buy it now on eBay or $130ish if u bid... My own testing makes the 6700K completely pointless.. I don't have a 8700K to compare it to, but seeing 8700K is based on 6700K/7700K with 2 extra cores, it's probably very closely behind a 8700K
Since this year's shit show, I really don't think I will support Intel ever again. Once again these CPUs don't bring anything new to the table and just win in gaming and single-core performance. I'm interested in the U series counterparts tho, I think more core will really bring a new era for mobile computing and will make better and cheaper laptops, but the desktops is just more of the same.

Also, I'm still rockin' an AMD FX8150 on liquid and always surprised how it can stream and capture without breaking a sweat. Those cores really make a difference when used right, even old and abused ones. Glad Intel finally has incentive to get competitive again.
Skylake=Kaby Lake (with higher clocks)=Coffee lake (with 2 extra cores): Same CPUs for 3 "generations"! Essentially Intel gave us what they should have given us a couple of years back with Skylake. But they didn't have to cause Ryzen wasn't there back then. If you are on anything Skylake or Kaby lake or Ryzen, don't even bother. The performance difference is not significant and you have no upgrade path. The Cannon Lake CPUs are gonna need a new mobo AGAIN in a few months. Seriously Intel just doesn't learn!

it's funny this is still being said by people too ignorant and lazy to look up why coffeelake/updated coffeelake-s is and will be on the Z370 and not the 170/270. That reason is they could literally burn on high-end Z270 models, because they got too high tensions over old gen pins. Great video!! although I loose out on Intel optane, netflix 4K, and some other potential goodies from current gen cpu's, my 4.7GHZ 6700K is mainly used for gaming and it NEVER lets me down. if there is a takeaway from this video, it is that my cpu is doing just fine for current and next gen titles. I'll wait for the 9900K to hit the $380 mark before making any purchasing decisions.

Michael Kreitzer We haven't even gotten close to saturating 8 PCI E 3.0 lanes on one consumer GPU. A Titan X Pascal running at PCI-E 1.0 speeds only slows down by about 5%.
If all you care about is gaming sure. Toss a couple of NVMe SSD's, some VR sensors, a SAS RAID card for a bulk storage solution, networking, sound, video capture, etc on there, and it becomes a problem. Or, heaven forbid, you might want to do some CUDA dev.
Even if the _raw_ throughput of the 16 lanes is sufficient, physical lane/slot layouts combined with lane configuration to onboard components will often limit you. Since everything is so severely oversubscribed you have to be very careful about how you connect things. That fancy new mobo may have two or more usb 3.1 ports, but it's probably sharing a couple of PCI lanes with everything else. Hope your motherboard vendor bothered to provide proper documentation..

According to another reviewer, the 370 chipset is just a 270 adjusted to work with coffee lake chips, so they could get them out earlier. Next year, the 390 boards will release with the originally planned 300 series chipset supporting additional pcie lanes, larger core counts, additional nvme support, etc.......

Some games like more cores, others don't like going past 4, so clock for clock and overall it's the same since single-threaded performance hasn't changed.

When in the HISTORY of computing did the needs for processing power not increased ? Answer, NEVER EVER so trying fool us and yourself into assuming you know what our budgets can and can Not afford is assuming WRONG. Coffee Lake is a absolute bargain and it's the most future proof CPU available. Coffee Lake IPC/GHz/FPS/OCing advantage will be gaming viable years longer than any IPC/GHz/FPS/OCing inferior AMD rysen. In the high end gaming world both watt wasting Vega and Rysen are DOA, pairing a powerful Pascal with a IPC/GHz/FPS/OCing inferior AMD rysen is burning GPU money.
So a 5 year old oc'ed 2600k has about the same perfomance with todays cpus..
But hey we get 2 extra cores after only 10 years with quad cores.

For content creation, productivity, and gaming, AMD offers up something special for the money. We can sit here and try to crunch made up numbers all day, but price matters.

It seems like a great competitor in the market to me. I don't think any generational improvements are enough to justify an upgrade of only 1-2 generations. Upgrades only make sense when a computer is no longer able to do what it was made to do or when it can boost productivity enough to provide tangible gains.

Not at all... you still have crappy IO on the Intel chips and ridiculous power usage for the i9s .... if you want the highest FPS then sure, but in general AMD's setups are still more well rounded at each tier of performance.

Thanks for a complete and in-depth review .. old & new . Half of Ryzen fame comes from being 'new' and not the same . I have a R5 1600X and it looks like to me this 8700k is a new sweet spot of performance and handily trounces even mega thread procs like Skylake X & TR in most all around benchies.
If there was no Ryzen they would have priced this at $500 ish or more like the original 2011 v3 extreme pricing .
I love my 1600X , but am shopping for a new video card..would be nice to use a IGP while shopping for the best deal . Then again the 8700k is double what I paid for the 1600X and the board will me closer to $200 than $150 for a decent ITX so that is $250 saved that can be utilized for video and nvme .
