Pragmatism wins in the end. The peace loving Avatar is willing to just kill his bastard brother, instead of risking a drawn out wizard duel.

This ending still fucks me up sometimes. It's goddamn genius. On the surface, it looks like a 180 of the movie's fairly consistent tone, but there's nothing about the gun, technology, or even propaganda that's necessarily evil: it's their use that colors them that way. The same could be said for Avatar's trickery and deception- which, by the way, is another reason why this scene is great: Blackwolf gets killed here because it never occurred to him that Avatar would resort to underhanded methods or technology made for killing. Avatar's too smart for that idealistic bullshit, though. Avatar isn't about lofty ideals or a sense of honor, he's about getting the fucking job done and putting an end to the madness. And then he tosses the gun without a second thought becuase, as with any principles he carries, he isn't married to it and it doesn't define who he is or what he does. The gun was a tool for defeating evil, and now that evil is defeated he no longer needs it.

    I fucking LOVE this ending.

I also liked how it's a total subversion of expectations. The movie is called Wizards but there's no magic. Just tech people think is magic. Just trickery. This build up to a final confrontation, and then Avatar just blasts the fucker. It's great.

But him pulling a gun on his evil brother to save Montegar is not only a surprising (and effective) trick, but it's ironic in that he uses a piece of technology to stop one who uses technology for evil. People seems to forget that this movie was done in the 70`s, reflecting not only on it`s aesthetics and themes, but on it`s moral too.
See, Avatar is basically a hippie dude who wants only peace and whatnot. Black Wolf, of course is the one who wants warfare and domination.
Now, the movie plays on those two ideals, showing not only that endless war is a terrible thing, but how extreme pacifism is impractical at the best. So, even if Avatar is not a big fan of violence, does not that mean he can`t be violent to protect himself, or else he is doomed from the start. That`s literally the moral of the movie.
A nice poke at the hippie generation and their impractical utopia, while showing a better way than just warmongering.

Sans Nom The way I took it was that Avatar pretty much forsook his beliefs on technology and stooped to his brothers level to kill him. It felt melancholic that a peace loving wizard would just whip out a gun and murder his brother ( Which was completely justified) instead of trying to find some alternate solution, or even just use magic to stop him. I don’t know. That was just my reaction to it.

Saruman was small change that could be left in low quality house arrest guarded by trees, then murdered by his own abused underling in front of an audience of hobbits. He wasn't ever treated as being much more important than the single danger of his charismatic voice. He was basically left to solve his own equation to zero after the Ents broke his physical power.

Ready to fight a magic duel to the worse than death. Ready to gleefully show Avatar just how weak and feeble his magic was in comparison to the great Black Wolf.
What Black Wolf was not ready for was a bullet. Because he wasn't expecting that.
Because why would any wizard use some lesser mundane weapon when they can use MAGIC, a greater weapon than every single mundane weapon combined?! It was an idea that Black Wolf had never even concieved, let alone considered. Totally unthinkable. So laughably impossible Black Wolf dismissed it before it ever became a conscious thought.
This is exactly why Avatar did exactly that.
He couldn't win a magic duel with Black Wolf and knew that. But he ALSO knew he never once said it was gonna be a magical duel at all. He knew Black Wolf would just assume that because they were both wizards. Black Wolf would go all in on preparing to fight magic with magic just because Avatar was a wizard.
He couldn't out-magic Black Wolf so he out-brained him instead. He did the one thing Black Wolf would never have been ready for even with a billion years to prepare: a wizard opponent NOT using magic at all and just using a mundane weapon.
This is the difference between a Wizard and a Sorcerer.
A Sorcerer casts spells... but he thinks ONLY in spells and magic. A Wizard CAN cast spells... but always considers all other options available equally.
Which is why a Wizard always beats a Sorcerer... every time.

Did anyone noticed Black Wolf's skeletal anatomy of both his arms were backwards? 🤨

I did appreciate the way this ending subverted expectations. You expect some kind of actual magical spell fight. But he just pulls a gun, something you never expect him to use. And just shoots his brother.
