    One of my favorite aspects of football is watching the linemen and receivers running downfield to make play-extending blocks. It's such a stat-less component of the game--but so fun to watch.

      What they do is such a huge part of the game. They need to make up a statistic for it so that casual fans can appreciate it more and so they have more coverage in analysis. Could maybe increase their pay too someday.

    • @Prsethsun
      @Prsethsun 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Think of it this way. When you’re punting, you’re switching to defense, yeah? Ans you want to make a tackle as far back as possible, or secure the ball, with blockers on the field you have to watch out for. Would it be smarter to run slower, looking in the sky for a ball you can’t see well because it’s sky high, and then get blasted by a blocker, or run full speed towards where the kick returner is, where you know that ball is going 99% of the time

    • @joeroscoe3708
      @joeroscoe3708 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Prsethsun Yeah, I get you dont wanna be looking up in the sky while your running downfield.
      And that without some other instructions, you're most likely gonna react to what's happening in front of you.
      So if the receiving team starts drifting left, you would go left too (or vice-versa).
      That's exactly why I would huddle up briefly and tell my guys, "I'm kicking it to the right", so matter which way the blockers set up, my guys are going to go right.
      That way we dont fall for that stupid shit.
      And if they do try it, they'll be screwed.
      It wouldnt be that hard to do a quick huddle first.

    • @joeroscoe3708
      @joeroscoe3708 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Prsethsun Well, obviously you can't _plan_ on a punter fucking up, right?
      You have to _plan_ on him doing his job.
      So, when this play happens (and it works out for the rec'v team)...
      Do you think it's due to human error by the punter? Or...
      Do you think the receiving team _plans_ to do it?
      Since it can't be both.
      Which is it?
      Obviously the answer is...the recieving team plans to do it.
      But it wouldn't work if everyone on the kicking team _knew_ exactly where the ball was going.
      Would it?
      No, it would not.
      So why not take 10 seconds to make sure everyone knows where youre gonna kick it?
      And if you don't think nfl punters can kick the ball exactly where they want to, you should check out some nfl punting practices.
      Those guys can drop it in a garbage can from 65 yards away.
      And if they do happen to shank it, the whole rec'v team isn't gonna know to automatically sprint into the fake play.
      They wouldn't really know he shanked it til after anyway.

    • @Prsethsun
      @Prsethsun 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joeroscoe3708 Trust me, I have crazy respect for punters, those dudes are nuts with what they can do with a football, and you’re absolutely right, receiving teams purposefully plan this fake.
      The reason this fake works, is of course the punting team knows “Okay, it’s punt right so the ball is supposed to go right” and in practice, they’re going to practice blindly sprinting to where the returner is or where the ball is supposed to go. They PRACTICE watching where the returner goes, regardless of the play call because they know thats where the ball has to be going 99% of the time, that way even if the punter manages to somehow fuck up, they still have an idea of where the ball is going. They practice following where the returner goes. So when the returner goes the wrong way on purpose, the punt team is gonna figure thats where the ball is going regardless of what they originally play called

    • @Prsethsun
      @Prsethsun 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joeroscoe3708 And if you still think thats wrong, the proof is in the pudding of these fakes that these return teams ran, they all flow to where the returner is regardless of the playcall, which is why they worked. I don't understand how one guy can pretend to catch the ball on one side of the field when it's actually going to completely the other side of the field. Don't they know where the ball is going?

    • @Prsethsun
      @Prsethsun 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They’re not super common, but sometimes (especially in games youre winning” forgoing the 3rd down on 3rd and long and doing whats called a “quick punt” is an effective way of pinning your opponent back, because there won’t be a punt returner.

    • @Prsethsun
      @Prsethsun 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really, you could punt on first down if you wanted to, there’s no rules saying you have to punt on 4th down specifically

      Same as in 1:06 play.
      Punt returner goes to opposite sideline as the punt, draws opponents attention to him, while his teammate runs below the ball, catches it and makes a return.

    I live in a country where we don't play American Football, as it is known outside of the USA, but I enjoy watching highlights from time to time. However, I can't wrap my head around the fake out under a punt, where the defending team makes the chasing team think the ball has gone to one side of the field, while the ball is actually going the other way, leaving the receiver with an open run back downfield. It means the kicking side's players are all bloody idiots, because they just blindly run upfield. None of them actually looks at the flight of the ball to see where they're supposed to go. No wonder receiving teams have cottoned on to the fact that it's easy to trick them into going the wrong way! I'm sure football fans could go into detailed explanations as to why this is clever, but to an outsider, it just makes football players look stupid. Or gullible.

    • @Prsethsun
      @Prsethsun 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats okay, this is a misconception a lot of people who don’t know football have, and as someone who does play American Football Ill explain. When you punt the ball to the other team, your goal is to tackle the punt returner (the guy who catches the ball and runs) as far back as you can, or secure the football. The other team is going to have blockers trying to block for said returner. So if you’re running, trying to keep track of a ball thats like 200 feet in the air, you’re running slower probably for one, and you’re likely to get absolutely blasted by someone on the opposing team. Whereas its much easier to sprint full speed ahead at where the returner is, because you know thats where the ball is going 99% of the time. It’s the same as say, walking across a road, at a non-crosswalk, looking into the sky with oncoming teaffic

    wtf is up with the texans faking a 44 yd field goal and instead punting it, is 44 yds to much to ask from an NFL kicker, they were down 3-0 in the second quarter, what i dont get even more is why the announcers see that as a good move????? its not like the game was on the line if they miss the kick, like there is literally absolutely no logic in that play call

      Not seeing the exact angle it comes off the foot, especially if youre engaged with another beefy 300 pound lineman, isnt too unreasonable. Add on that wind could make a kick move in the air too and its reasonable most players wouldnt be able to directly tell where the ball is overhead

    • @farrisduwayri8640
      @farrisduwayri8640 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The kicking team won’t be looking at the sky to see where the punt is, It would be hard to just look up in a split second, i’d they look up to look for the ball, they’d lose speed or focus on the game. The only one who really knows is the kicker and the returner. The rest are just following the people they think know.
