If you call someone an “addict”, you’re basically wishing them the end. Maybe, when it turns out to be one of YOUR friends or family, your judgment will change. Addiction is a disease, and it’s hurt people trying to medicate pain. Have a heart! We don't have a well-tested, affordable healthcare system with the proper testing of providers, especially as it pertains to staying up to date on research and rare illnesses. Indeed many so called "rare dieases" are not as much rare as they are not caught by doctors who don't want to be bothered to learn about them. I once had a doctor brag about a procedure that his friend often did that bought him his, "first sports car" as in that was why he enjoyed during it so much. This doctor also gave me amphetamines for what turned out to be Autoimmune Encephalitis. I almost died and suffered for eleven months before getting the right treatment. I can't count how many times I've been mocked or simply ignored by doctors/medical staff when I was in a medical crisis both in offices and hospitals. We need to make sure the people caring for us in out most vunerable state are capable and compassionate. RIP Matthew, regardless your demons, you spread light and love to so many. ♥
