You have forgotten to mention one very very very important historical fact. The FIRST HIGH RAISED BUILDING of MODERN INDIA IS LIC BUILDING MOUNT ROAD MADRAS. Of course the very next year the record was broken when construction of USHA TOWERS BOMBAY was completed. Please remember here that we are talking about modern India and Modern high raised building and should not get confused with Kudup Minar Delhi or Tanjore Temple tower etc. LIC Building Madras was the first modern tallest building in the modern India. Ref Wikipedia - LIC building Madras.

Yes, LIC Bldg. was India's first skyscraper, even Singapore had none in those times! Its "Usha Kiran" Building (25 floors I think) the first Sky Scraper built in 1971 (whose 1st tenents were India's ex Cricket Capt.LateTiger Pataudi & his Mrs.Sharmila Tagore) Then came the Air India Bldg, followed by Oberoi Shraton Hotel in 72 at Nariman Pt, where land was artificialy reclaimed from the sea as Bombay had scarce avlbl.land).

We cannot sit and rest on our laurels of a 11 story building been FORMER tall building- Chennai was ambitious and expansive with new ideas during the British - now we have settled for mediocrity and just happy with what laurels we have achieved decades ago!

The old Map you showed is from 1909 and it is NOT 426 sq km. It was barely 100 sq km. The current 426 sq km is the area of the Greater Chennai corporation which includes areas like Ambattur, Madhavaram and Solinganallur. The 1089 sq km is the area of Chennai metropolitan area which includes distant suburbs like Tambaram, Avadi, Vandalur, etc. Anna Nagar came up in the 1960s and not after 1975.

I am not a chennai guy. But i love chennai more than any other cities. But nowadays lots of people hating Chennai. Because of flood. And 19% of the city is going to be under water in 2050. Let the government develop the Chennai city. But Tamil Nadu government also develop the city like coimbatore Madurai. And should make them as one of the top most metro cities in india. Should make that city to compete with Bangalore Hyderabad. Because of the weather and flood chennai is hatted by lots of people

Also, one more thing I need to highlight is out of all the other Metros in India Chennai has drinking water issues. Though I agree other cities do have that due to increase in population but Chennai has water issues even from the 90's. When I use live in Bangalore in the late 90's our home doesn't had borewell. We use to get Cauvery water all day. Same in Mumbai especially during monsoon season you will water more frequently even in summer its still better than Chennai.
TN politicians still destroying our natural resources and giving it to neighboring states. We need to concentrate on developing more water bodies. In future, no state will give us water until and unless if there is flooding.
Skyscrapers will worse the situation because they have to depend upon tanker lorries like the same way OMR residential people are doing now,.

Whether people stay in a skyscraper or a suburban township development, the water demand is going to be the same.
TN gov has done a very bad job in water management.
Its high time we develop skyscrapers and use that tax money in developing desalination plants for drinking water.
If DESERT countries in the gulf can do it..why can't we do it.

I was a downtown Mannady man, it should have developed vertically atleast the George town area. The water and infrastructure are till too good here developed by British. Unfortunately the baboos of secretariet and other office staff purchased a small piece of land at Nanganallur, Velachery etc built their independent houses as un organised colonies. If the urban Development had any imagination atleast the Georgetown would have been like Coloba of Bombay. The baboos spent more time in travel and not seen anything other than office, train and home. A wasted generation and seeded the un organised urban Development.

In almost every developed ir developing country's are several skyscrapers.
In some cities, the skyscrapers are all in a designated area(see Paris-LaDefance, London-CanaryWarf NewYork-Manhattan, etc.,),etc
And on other country cities thay may be spreading over one or more areas.
And they may also be called as Business or Financial or Commercial District or area, but they do exists in most cities and its part if the city's modern must haves in the 2023 21st century.
TAMILNADU and Chennai though are having good literacy and educated and good in all industries and IT, yet you folk's don't develop
    1) Skyscrapers district
    2) River beautification, Riverside public parks, walking paths/themed walkways, river cruises(day and evening) all over the rivers flowing thru Chennai, Madurai, Tiruchi, etc ,. And create a big tourism industry
    3) in the marina beach create a high rise city and bay watch tower with modern glassed dome gondola/tubular cabs/glassed lifts going up tge tower to say 200meters and giving people and tourists a great breathtaking view of chennai and Sea.
    4) Where tge river meets tge sea(mouth) have intetnational standards water theme parks and SEALIFE/SEAWORLD style attractions
    5) the Chennai people and your fxckxn councils and councillors and municipalities ckean all roads, streets, all digged roads, streets nicely cleared and patched. Have bug and clean and nice padestrian pavements(i see most of you walking on street/roads and nit on pavements), stop pedestruan pavements encroachments by people/vehicles and corporates. NO HANDICAP/BLIND/OLD/ILL people can walk in pedestrian pavements bcos its fxckxn not proper.
    6) Run city tour OPEN BUS(RED BUS) in a posh manner as it us being done in most countries and thier cities
    6) create a long stretch of walking paths along all of the stretches where tge rivers(coovam, Adyar etc. ) flows incside the city with lights and if required create as many small shops for lower income people's so that they run stalls for making a living.
    7) redecorate and make every bridge, public building, including new ones with a monumental outlook as a public/ tourist attractions instead of corruption and scams in the public bridges, building's, etc ,
Again, I'm not sure Y I'm telling this to you TAMILS, bcos yiu are a ancient race and you know everything, but you still live in the past😢

    Skyscrapers doesn't mean it's developed.
Look at European cities, top cities like London, Paris, Zurich, Berlin has no skyscrapers and they are more developed than the skyscraper capital China, UAE, USA.

Wrong info , first map u showed isn’t 426 sqkm it’s 190’ ish only …426 was the scnd map I.e latest Chennai district boundary and also Chennai corp boundary from 2018 , Chennai metropolitan area ( city + and it’s suburban ) was only 1196 sqkm till 2023 …from 2023 it’s 5,900 ish sqkm includes entire Kanchi , chengai , Thiruvalluvar and a tiny bit of Ranipet district ….it was planed to be 8,800 ish sqkm by last govt before can be increased to it in near future

  • @venkateshs9689

This video has missed the Most Important No. ONE point - Air Pollution. The 20th century Devpt of skyscrapers in Western countries led to huge concentration of population & explosion of pollution from countless vehicles & enormous consumption of electricity generated from coal/oil fired thermal plants. Late 20th century Urban Planners realized the dangerous health hazards of Skyscrapers creating vast closely-packed urban populations in ‘concrete jungles’. This is the status in Delhi with Air Quality Index, AQI, over 400 - one of the most polluted cities in the world. Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata & even Pune have high AQI affecting the health of their populations. But City Planners in Chennai have actively prevented ‘concrete jungles’ in Chennai by strictly limiting skyscrapers in City Business Centre around Anna Salai & ensuring horizon expansion of urban population. Chennai City Planners & Administration has ensured AQI of 90 which is the Best & Unmatched by any other Metropolitan city in India.
