Maybe authentic Tamil city. But there is no authentic South Indian. There are other cities too in southern part of India like, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kochi, Trivandrum, etc with their own culture.
Chennai is one of the four big metro cities in India, and one of the authentic cities in Tamilnadu, along with other cities like, Thanjavur, Madurai, Coimbatore, Kanyakumari, etc.
      Vanakkam all 🙏

Bombay used to be such a beautiful place in the 70s and 80s, fresh and open air ❤ yes among South Indian cities Chennai is absolutely great, when I think about how the Quam River stank of feces and chemicals in the 80s from afar. Tamils (and Andhra descendants) are definitely trying their best to make this a liveable and loveable city ❤❤❤ my favourite big city of the south

Funny how he keeps mentioning Chennai isn’t touristy when it is the capital of the most visited state (Tamil Nadu) in India by both domestic (Indian) and international tourists for many consecutive years.

Also tourists can be of different kinds. You have got to specify which category of tourists you are talking about.
Foreign tourists visit Karnataka the most followed by Gujarat,Delhi, and Maharashtra
Indian tourists visit Kerala a lot more frequently.
Again stats are based on hotel bookings , reservations etc. Tourism officials provide different stats based on tickets sold at museums, art galleries , railway bookings etc.

Also north of chennai, there is a pulicat bird santuary which has Fort Geldria Dutch cemetry and there is a Dutch cemetry in Tharangambadi. For a population of 1.4 billion people and with so many cities and tourist spots, 18 million is a miserable figure. Compare that with Malaysia, with only 30+ million people and fewer cities and tourist spots the country used to get about 25million visitors per year during pre-covid era. At one time Malaysia used to get almost as many tourists as its own population. Even Vietnam is catching up and was already doing 18 million during the pre-covid era.
