I saw Lara on a chat program. She has a kind of reverence for each song. Each performance feels new. Elvis is the only other singer I can think of who pulls us in with an almost silent “cry." We feel an urgency to attend to that warm sound. (Albeit, Elvis had lousy material, but his live performances,…!) You just can’t look away. They both take us, magically transform us indelibly. I have the response to your question! The music of Broken Vow was co-composed by Walter Afanassiev and Lara Fabian, inspired by a classic piece of Rachmaninoff (Piano Concerto N°2 in C Minor). Walter Afanassiev, an american/brazilian from russian descent, is a legendary composer and producer (he composed some of the greatest initial hits of Mariah Carey such as All I Want for Christmas is You and was the producer of the Titanic soundtrack that brought Celine Dion to WW fame). He is also now the producer of Dimash for his US career. When this song was composed, Walter and Lara were engaged, but apparently he cheated and she decided to break up. When she took this decision, that she knew would dramatically change both her personal and professional destiny, she wrote these incredible lyrics. Lara has said this is her preferred english song from all the songs she wrote in this language (there are many, and some are pure jewels).
