I understand that gaining hands-on experience is important, but who leaves an inexperienced intern unsupervised?? I thought it's procedure for interns to have constant supervision from the doctors looking over them.

Later Reynolds says that it was his fault because he should't have sent Luke alone, also (this is not a justification, only explaining the situation) he was busy doing an intervention to a patient and there was no one else to take care of that patient

Sad part is that this happens very often. Mistakes that could cost an intern's med career and the doctor in charge prefers to keep it as a secret, although I know here Reynolds did it because he wanted to protect Luke and the patient luckily didn't die.
But here we see Luke realized his mistake and admited it, there are others who refuse to accept their mistakes in that career

Also in any field of profession, you bite the bullet and take responsibility. Lying can get people killed.

@@foolslayer9416 but at least Luke didn't do it intentional. He realized he forgot to check on his patient's ears and tried to fix it but it was late

In this case was also the fault of the doctor as he said for giving to much responsibility when the student wasn't ready

@delmicortave To be fair, an intern who seems and acts reliable *should* be tested in this way. Make it or break it.

Few important things that need to be hammered to all healthcare students should be "It is OK to admit you do not know. It is OK to miss something and trying to fix it ASAP. Distraction's happen. FOCUS on YOUR patient." Communication, Communication, Communication. Without toxic pressure, judgement, passive aggressive bullying. Mistakes, even deadly ones are part of that job whether we like it or not. There is always room for improvement.

Duke definitely deserves some blame in this circumstance, but he was basically sent from a knitting circle to a highway pileup, so getting distracted isn't too unreasonable. Can't expect absolute perfection from a new intern, but Reynolds probably has some predisposition towards pushing for it anyway.

Completely unrealistic that a cardio checkup of all things would be performed by an unsupervised intern. He would at least have a resident looking over his shoulder.

Ears are rarely checked in an ER or even at regular doctor offices. The only time ears are checked, usually, are if the patient is experiencing pain in the ear, a yearly physical, or if you ask. My mom had shingles. No ear was checked.

they were checking for a specific complication of shingles indicated by right-sided chest pain. ears are ALWAYS checked in an ER (barring immediately present trauma) and at just about every doctor's appointment. that's why every doctor's office has an otoscope, no matter what their specialty actually is

Here we see one of the deadly sins of patient care: Distraction. Sometimes it's not paying attention when a patient tells you something because you're focused on the previous patient, sometimes it's an old lady causing a scene, it's very easy to fall victim to.

Even though Lauren's reaction wasn't exactly the most professional she wasn't wrong, Luke forgot to check the ears of his patient and that provoked an infection wich nearly killed him

It is HIS fault he got MAJORLY distracted to the point where he LEFT his patients side to stand and watch and fold his arms at a scenario that had NOTHING to do with him

Doctor in charge of supervising him is at fault. Shouldn't have overwhelmed a beginner intern like that and then leave him unsupervised.

Of course he had no choice taking the interns side because it's a direct reflection on his own leadership skills and ability to ascertain whether an intern is ready to work on his own.

In a way yes, but it really was his fault. You gotta get over this stuff in the medical field, but again he is still an intern. Good learning experience, however serious.
