  • Here's how to do a valve adjustment on a Royal Enfield Bullet 500 Motorcycle. It's a neat design. You can do it in under 10 minutes and don't even need to remove the valve covers. See more about my motorcycle on my website at www.hoohoohoblin.com

    Thanks,
    Have broken my inlet valve push rod yesterday and replaced it in 40' minutes using your video. I noticed that the new push rod sometimes twists like I have seen on your video. The reason in my case is the cup on the rocker end or on the tappets end which is not equal. Here in India however this is normal.The price for 1 push rod here is 60 Roupies or 1.25 Us dollar, but cannot guarantee it will last or long, so I bought 5 at the same time.
    Regards
    Mar

    Removing the center nut that retains the tappet cover gives more freedom for movement while using spanners to adjust the tappets. Also noticed a slight wobble in the exhaust push rod.

    There is another school of thought. Of adjusting the push-rod clearance when the engine is hot, because thats how your engine is going to run. The only difference when adjusting it hot is that instead of the push-rod rotating freely without any play, you need to tighten it as much that you can just move it with your thumb (without spin and with burnt fingers of course). I prefer to adjust the push-rods with engine at operating temperature.

    @volucerparagliders Valve clearences should ALWAYS be done when the engine is cold, that's Stone Cold, ideally left overnight or several hours until theres not a hint of warmth from any part of the block.

    Yep, you should do it when the engine is cold. You know that this type of metal expands when it's warming up so you could burn one or more valves. I know several cases of that sort. But i hope your bike keeps running great and the valves aren't going to float. :)

  • @AkashKalgude

    Thats true, you might loose a bit of compression on a cold start. But that doesn't last for more than a minute or two after which the engine starts getting sufficiently hot.

    thank you for your response.I brought mechanic and he loosened the valves,and regained compression,but there came back the old sound (tick tick) with it...he says that the head section needs a full repair to remove the sound,adjusting tappat valves won't work,and it's also expensive.he also showed a single small "tick" when the kicker goes down(during start,which I normally(I think it needs very much attention to notice it) didn't notice till date.that too will cost me a lot!what's your advice?

  • @HAMZADKHAN
    @HAMZADKHAN 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    hi there...thanks for the video...should the valves keep on rotating all time?because when I adjusted mine,and after a start,when I rechecked,the left valve is easily rotating but right one is not having neither up-down nor rotating motion,also I am suffering from low compression now(HORRIBLE!!!)...kicker is giving very low compression load...anyways it's getting started...pls give advice...

    I have a 2000 RE Bullet 500. I always adjust the valves with the engine hot. Mechanics gloves are required. But I've been told that it's more accurate that way. Have you heard anything similar?

    • @hoohoohoblin

      Not sure if it helps or not. I'd guess that the metal would expand when it's hot, making things a bit tighter.

    Great Video! I've had a nasty clatter coming from my 2008 classic since I got it second hand last summer, didn't have clue how to adjust the valves, tried to noodle my way through Snidal's book without much success. Followed your video and I've got the beauty clatter, chatter free, thanks! Question, the bike sat for 4 to 5 years before I bought it (retirement gift never rode) so after I ended up changing out solenoid's plugs, rotten gas etc it finally ran, thankfully I've gotten good at kick starting it, lol.. I now think I have a rotted head gasket as it's leaking a little oil, any suggestions on a video for that? Thanks again.

      +PeeCee Metal expands when it gets hot and contracts when I gets cold, so I'm sure there is a difference, but I can't remember if you're supposed to check this hot or cold. I think I said it in the video, but I don't remember.

      It might get a little louder when it is out of adjustment. Ideally you'd want to check it before it gets out of adjustment. It is so easy to do it, that it makes sense to do it at every oil change.

    i have same Cast iron Bike with 500cc mill, i hear lot of clatter at speeds above 70 so i thought the valves need adjustment , brought piston on TDC and there was no up and down play in valves , so i am confused what can be causing the clattering sound resembling that of Sewing machine

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure, but it is definitely something on the top of the engine. You should remove the valve covers and see if anything looks broken or loose. Maybe a spring is broken.

    • @getsetgarden
      @getsetgarden 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's easier to confirm the play when the piston is at TDC during the compression stroke. Which is the successive TDC after the ammeter flicks to the center. Pay close attention to the movement of the push rods. It's right after the exhaust pushrod (one to the right) moves down. At that point, both the pushrods are relaxed and rotate freely, making it easy to check the play.

    • @getsetgarden
      @getsetgarden 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You also need to inspect whether there's backlash between the intake and exhaust cam wheels. Open up the timing case, bring the piston to TDC (the pushrods should rotate freely). Hold the exhaust / intake timing gear and try to rapidly rotate it left and right to check for play/noise. Maybe that's the cause.

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ALL valves in ALL engines that do not have hydraulic lifters should be paper thin loose, absolutely. (.05mm to .1mm) no wonder Royal Enfield has bad durability name, nobody knows what they are doing! :)

    • @46ace
      @46ace 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joes right.... if they are too tight the valve may not be closing completely.: If it never seats you lose compression. More importantly If it never seats completely, the valve never transfers the heat of combustion to the head (cooling the valve) and it can burn and melt.

      That maybe true, but I am not sure which way the metal expands when it gets hot. It’s possible that when it gets hot the valves closed tighter because the metal expanded. If you have it adjusted the way the factory recommended, it should run normally.
