About Bondrewd: his character is easy to misread because most of the information about him and his motives is given here and there, so it's easy to miss. In summary, due to the Zoaholic he lost his ability to feel bad about his actions, everything he says should bd taken at face value (he's not trying to ba manipulative or trick them at all, beyond the scope of what's needed for his SCIENCE), and he was trying to recreate what happened to Nanachi on himself so that he could safely explore the sixth layer and bring his findings back to the surface. More specifically: -Bondrewed is the sole reason people know anything about how the Abyss works; what the affects of the curse are, how it's triggered, the fact that it gets weaker further from the center of the shaft, how to make white whistles, etc. He was made a White Whistle because of his accomplishments in helping humanity more safely explore and understand this place. -The creation of a white whistle requires a WILLING human sacrifice. If the person doesn't want to become a white whistle to help the intended user, the process WILL NOT WORK. -Because of that, Bondrewed used the Zoaholic to copy himself, the sacrificed his original body to become his own white whistle. -One of the affects of the Zoaholic is that it destroys your humanity and literally MAKES you go insane. However, Bondrewed was SO dedicated to studying the abyss that when he lost his humanity, rather than becoming a mass murderer or serial rapist or something, he just became a scientist that didn't have the ability to understand what "too far" means. (Granted, that's actually scarier for someone who's genuinely nice to LITERALLY NOT UNDERSTAND why it's a bad thing to hurt someone, even if it's helping further science...) -To help make exploring the abyss even safer, Bondrewed wanted to find a way around the curse of the sixth layer (which will either kill you or turn you into a hollow like Mitty). -Since the curse only affects humans, he needed (what he viewed as) willing sacrifices who would let him study it, leading to the experiment that Mitty and Nanachi went through. -The way the kids were transported from the surface wasn't a shortcut or a hidden path, it was literally just an armored box that the Umbral Hands would carry while they descended on the normal path (protecting the box from the monsters themselves). -In that experiment, he had already discovered that "forcing the curse to one container" wouldn't work with animals or two people who didn't care about each other. His next attempt was on two good friends, in the hopes that the desire to protect a friend would override the desire to die while being hit with the curse (which is why Nanachi was "just in time"). -This gave him two ideas: one was the cartridges (which would use the same technology as the elevator to pump the curse away from him and into the person in the cartridge), and the other was to get the same "blessing" that Nanachi had (a body that, while not IMMUNE, was still RESISTANT to the curse). -He tried doing the same thing on himself (using two of "him", like when he made his white whistle), but unfortunately, while he could still be hit with the curse, the abyss no longer saw him as human enough for the same process to work. He couldn't become his own cartridge, nor would the abyss give him its blessing. -He started getting the volunteer kids to like him (using Nanachi as bait to lure them in) and became genuine friends with them. In his mind, he did genuinely care for them and appreciated what he saw as their willing sacrifices. Once the feeling was strong enough, he would turn them into cartridges. -While this worked for avoiding the curse, he still couldn't get the blessing. Friendship wasn't strong enough. It needed to be LOVE. -Prushka was the daughter of an Umbral Hand who was being transported in the box (like other children), but there was some sort of accident and the box was damaged, nearly killing her. -Bondrewed decided to become her father to develop a bond of familial love with her (after all, a child wouldn't develop romantic love for him (that would be weird!), and an adult would be too big for a cartridge, so he needed the strongest kind of love that exists between an adult and a child: parental love). -Bondrewed GENUINELY loved Prushka like a daughter. Like with the white whistles, it wouldn't work if he was faking it; it had to be mutual, not one-sided. It's just that, since Bondrewed lost his humanity, he doesn't feel bad about sacrificing the things he loves for the greater good (and doesnt understand why that's a bad thing when the "thing" in question is a person). -The other requirement was that she had to want to PROTECT him (like Mitty was protecting Nanachi), but he was having trouble getting her to feel that. That's why he let one of "him" get killed in front of her, then revealed himself right afterwards; to maximize the feelings of "I don't want papa to die; I must protect him". -Now that Prushka's emotional requirements had been met, he turned her into a cartridge. Then, when she was "used", the emotions between them were the same as the emotions between Nanachi and Mitty in the elevator, and the same transformation took place in Bonedrewed. *The rumble of scientific triumph.* -Because Prushka was _also_ wanting to sacrifice herself for Riko, she became her white whistle as well. -In the end, Bondrewed was genuinely impressed that they found a way to beat him and was happy that they would get to go learn more about the abyss. In his mind, while it was disappointing that he lost the body he had just gotten, he had still finally reproduced the experimental results he was wanting to, and they had proven that their will was stronger than his, so he had no problem yielding to them. TL;DR Bondrewed is a fascinating and complex character. He's not evil, just a friendly scientist who's tragically and _TERRIFYINGLY_ incapable of empathy.

The tone of Prushka's story changes when you realize that Lyza asked Bondrewd to help create the material for her daughters white whistle before she took her last dive. Unlike all the other children he isolated Prushka and created a situation where she would be immediately drawn to the daughter of another white whistle and would instantly bond deeply with Riko. This was the trial that he references Prushka was missing. It is why she she was able to so quickly bond, and then give her desire not to her father, but to the one other child she had met who had an endless desire to keep adventuring no matter the cost. It is still tragic, it is still dark, but it was by design.
Regarding the Papa Pole: it isn't what you're immediately assuming. The absolute worst part is that even IF Bondrewd really was abusing her, it would still be the least offensive thing he's done all day, and holy shit, I'm terrified that I can say that.

Bondrewd is that villain who you despise at first; but realize that, if you were placed in his boots, you would not even be within lightyears of what's he's accomplished. His depraved actions derived from cold logic, his acknowledgement of how f*cked up his actions are, and the effort he makes to try to pay back for said actions make him appear insane and disturbing. Not only that, but he has been known to subject himself to the same experiments his patients have gone through: making him not a hypocrite and a sadist. I feel his insanity is justified compared to other "insane" anime characters due to this, and serves as a breath of fresh air from the cut and paste serial killer/delusional stalker/mad scientist trope. Basically I love best dad: he's sanely insane, he isn't a hypocrite, and overworks himself in satan's murderhole to make the lives of future cave dwellers not as bad a living hell as he once experienced it.
Bondrewd is not a villian who is evil for sake of being evil. He is someone who is falled deep down in madness, stripped of his morals and ethics because of the relic he uses.He literally sacrificed his own humanity for his white whistle because his most important thing in his life was himself. Yeah, he is very much fucked up and his methods are beyond comprehension for any normal people but the thing his Bondrewd was actually revealing the secrets of abyss and he actually find a way of reversing the curse itself and still having their own humanity after ascending from six layer, which is an amazing feat. Bondrewd was always so kind even after he defeated by our characters. He was always in utter control of the situation. When he was dying he also realized Nanachi and others determination towards reaching their goals surpassed his own. He roots for our main characters and wishes the best for them. In the last scene when we see Bondrewd we can see an actual face beneath the mask and finally we can humanize the character. Prushka wanted to go an adventure with our trio so much she actually became a white whistle and she actually kinda got what she wanted.
Very much like all the symbolic themes through the movie, shame I missed so many :( But yeah, we will never forget Prushka as long as Riko has her whistle, RIP ;(
- Reg did, briefly, use his 'zoom' feature in Episode 4 when Habolg was pursuing them. - Using Zoaholic does cause insanity - specifically spreading your mind into multiple bodies causes a erosion of your sense of self. - It is canon that Nanachi smells amazing and has luxuriously soft fur. - Ouzen mentioned - or rather was described as mentioning how the timbre of a white whistle unlocks the true purpose of certain relics. - Normal cartridges are sufficient to allow Bondrewd to transfer the effects of the Curse to the child inside, but yes Prushka was specifically raised to be Bondrewd's Mitty so that he could obtain 'The Blessing'. That being said, their relationship may not be 'fake' for Bondrewd either he is quite insane at this point... - Nanachi noted, in the Manga at least, that Reg had killed all of Bondrewd's bodies that were capable of combat. He did urge them to continue on with their adventures though. - Yes, recharging incinerator was the point of Reg venturing down into the power plant. Riko mentioned in Episode 2 that Reg can operate on either electricity or food. Unfortunately, we don't know whether it's possible to recharge his weapon just by eating or not. The conversation in the processing room was pretty complicated, but basically Riko was answering her own question to Nanachi about how the different Bondrewds were able to use the same whistle when they are said to be limited to the original owner - the answer being that the whistle itself *is* the original human Bondrewd who sacrificed himself after transplanting his consciousness using Zoaholic. He also notes with disappointment that, being an effective hivemind, he cannot use his own bodies to craft more cartridges as they're all considered one being. As for the Blessing, we're not really sure. It allows Nanachi to perceive the Curse, but it's not fully clear what other abilities are conferred.
It's not in the manga, but Akihito said at a screening that the white coat bodies are combat-focused. So there was definitely more, like the one in the layer 4 flower fields, just not any that were immediately accessible. He also noted that the white coat in the flower fields is actually equipped with more powerful relics than the body that had Third Works (the biomechanical tail for anyone that doesn't know), and that Riko and her friends would have been in more trouble if he was around.
Concerning Lyza's white whistle, she already had hers when she introduced Torka (Riko's dad) to Ozen, during Ozen's flashback. Torka died during the expedition to retrieve the Unheard Bell from the fourth layer, during a run-in with competing foreign cave raiders. The same expedition during which Riko was born. It's a pretty common mistake to make during this part of the story, though. As for the blessing, it's an effect that you get when you ascend in the sixth layer, but usually the curse outweighs its effects so severely that you wouldn't even notice it. It was when Bondrewd observed the effects on Nanachi, when the curse was entirely redirected to Mitty, that he noticed it.
Riko hit each and every Curse Layers possible. (1 to 5) A true White Whistle needs it in a way. Blessings and Curses. Love is everything. The 6th level is VERY special as you can see, it's "The Last Dive" for a reason. It _curses_ most people, but _blesses_ some if you want to come back to the 5th Layer. Nanachi was _blessed_ by the Love from Mitty (and the aid of the machine they were in). Bondrewd was _blessed_ in the last battle because he used Prushka (in the last Cartridge) because she Loved him. White Whistles are made of people, "Your Worth", most likely ritually executed on an altar back before by people who wanted to be, you *need* to, it's about Love, or it doesn't work. Then you gain access to the true nature of relics, but it doesn't grant you special powers or anything against the Curse, nothing really does. You have no idea what's coming in the 6th Layer, it's very original.
white whistles can activate relics, which is why the curse-repelling vessel reacted that way when ozen blew her whistle. riko blowing her whistle seemed to resonate with reg, which makes sense since he's a relic himself. he said his stomach got hot, so maybe she quicked the healing process unwittingly or something.
The soundtracks in the series are composed by Kevin Penkin, whom was also responsible for the soundtrack in Rising of the shield hero, and Tower of God. Additionally he composed the song used in Star Wars Visions: The village Bride.
One of the things I love about Bondrewd is that the man isn't evil despite the fact that he's done awful things. He's shown genuine kindness and love to all the characters he's talked to. Even after he's defeated, he still shows kindness and respect to Reg and Nanachi. It's just that some of his morals are warped, because being the netherworld for so long caused a lot of mental strain
Bondrewd is literally the definition of "By any means necessary" Except without any real humanity to hold him back. When he says he loves them he truly does, he loves what they are sacrificing for the gain of the greater world. When he said we will go on adventures together he meant it, either as a piece of equipment or as a stepping stone you will be apart of his adventures. He is truly the representation of loss of ones humanity.
Bondrewd is a fantastic villain. He saved Prushka and gave her a few good years to gain her love and then rip her apart for his research. What a monster.
Great reaction! I didn't see anybody mention it, but the composer originally wanted to have the choir of children go quite one by one as they were used up in the fight against Reg, but that never happened, sadly, it would have been so much darker and so much more impactful!
in order for the blessing to occure, both need to have strong love for each other just like nanachi and mitty love each other, bondrewd and prushka also have strong love for each other, otherwise the blessing didn't came to be
37:32 no this is still in the 5th layer but near the 6th so you get affected by the 6th curse, the 6th is called the golden city, the capitial of unreturned and it was revealed in episode 3 when they were inspecting the map, and this doesn't look anything like it
you know what.. since he got the bless he now can predict the future by seing the flow of the abyss.. thats why every reg attack cannot even touch bondrewd
Not realy. The monsters of the Abyss can read the changes in the forcefield instinctively. Nanachi can see it but doesn't know how to predict the movents of others from it. Same for Bondrewd.
@Someone101 Just one point... Bondrewd, actualy still "Feels" when it comes to some emotions. Not as a "Normal" person should, but he does actualy truly love every "Specimens" he "worked with." [Especialy Pruska and Nanachi.] He is not "out" of all empathy. [This "Empathy" just take another form, twisted, indeed, but still there.] [One more thing, he's experiment with Pruska and the others was a *Complete* success, he was "Blessed", just as plan, but when he said to Prushka that they're adventure would go on, he wasnt lying at all.... He knew that she would "Produce" a White Whistle trought this final experience, usable for him and due to they're encounter, Pruska's was counting on Riko to be used too. Even if on that point, you can count it like a "plus".] Which is one more thing absolutly wonderful about this Character. [And there are soooo much more to say about Bondrewd....]
.....I think Reg lost his memory EXACTLY for firing the last shot on ep1...........not due to electricity....., or this one would do the same to worse.....
Ok if you have anything i can aws i will but this is a fact that this movie didnt tell 1-Bondrew(i will call him Bw from now) had modifly his body too the eye is a giveaway 2-Bw him self have alot of bouty on his head oversea becoz takeing kid for oversea is bad 3-alot of umbra hand is a bouty hunter who come for his head 4-zoraholic is can spard you mind form touch that mean if he want to he can touch Rico and it all over 5-he use Zoaholic only to ppl who let him use his body as host 6-Rico and team didnt destroy Zoaholic Bw ask them not to do it and they didnt want to risk that. Yes nobody in umbra hand can win Reg but if 20 of them aim at Rico at the same time Reg cant help with that . 7-Wakuna and Surajo are go down from 5 layer to 6 layer befor Rico met Bw
This movie is so dang messed up. But Bondrewd genuinely believed he was doing good. And he was genuinely hopeful to have Nanachi and their friends join him in his mission to become a hallow. I think he really did care for Prushka in a way. He had horrible, twisted intentions. But he gave her the greatest care he possibly could. Its so sad what happened to her because Bondrewd was all she had....
he cut pluska.. her leg arm.. remove her bones and skull and skin of her body and all organ that is not necessary.. until she only left with enough organ to stay conscious.. yes pluska was alive and conscious while she is in that cartridge and fell all that pain when bondrewd climbing up to the fifth layer just like mitty.. and then they sewed her so she is small enough to put into the cartridge., damn huh..
Question regarding mostly to what the "your worth" is and what the "blessing" actually means in detail. Am I right to assume that the cartridges were to protect Bondrewd from the curse?
@@LaDixCommentaries "your worth" is the name for the material that used to create white whistles. When white whistle (cave raider) wants to go below the fifth level on their "last dive", they use the white whistle to activate the orb that you saw at the end of the movie that lower them to the "Capital of the unreturned", so our heroes couldn't continue their journey without one, because it's the only way down. Like Bondrewd said white whistles are created from person that are willing to sacrifice their life for intended user. So the reason why Riko cant use her mom's whistle is because no one other than her mom can use that whistle. Just as no one other than Riko can use Riko's whistle. "Blessing" is effect that's inflicted on the person that ascends sixth layer and manifests itself in a change in physical form just like the "Curse". Nanachi and her situation with Mitty is exeptional. When two people with strong emotional connection ascend together, one can bear the curse of another. So if Mitty and Nanachi ascended separately it would be: Mitty(blessing+curse), Nanachi(blessing+curse). In that situation, just like Bondrewd said: people are unable to see the effect of "blessing" because of the great strains of the curse. But because they ascended together and Mitty took on Nanachi's curse upon herself, the result were: Mitty(blessing+curse+curse), Nanachi(blessing). After Bondrewd saw the results of the experiment with Nanachi and Mitty he understood that he can make what he calls "cartridges". To make one cartridge he needs to make a kid love him, then he removes everithing "unnecessary" from them and stuff what's left in the container. When he ascends, the same method is used, his curse hits the kid in the cartridge and he's left with the blessing. You will understand what blessing actually is in the second season. I will not spoil anything from there. I will say this: "your worth" that you see is not a complete white whistle and even though it works, it's still needs to be polished, just like the ore needs to be worked on to become metal... And the last thing. At the end of the movie Riko asked "Prushka is that you?" not without reason. Prushka is now the white whistle, but she's not dead (that, and how it works will be explored in season 2 as well). Sorry for horrible english, it's not even my second language.
The material used to create white whistles is also called a "life reverberating stone". It's not really explained exactly what that means (yet? I haven't read the source) but it seems like it's at least partly because it's made from a life (and perhaps is still somewhat alive) and it reverberates both with the owner of the whistle and with the high-class artifacts. Several seem to require a white whistle to operate, including the elevator here and the cube Riko was resuscitated in -- and Reg seemed to have a reaction to it as well. Another interesting thing to note about them is that they seem to be triggered by thought, or at least don't require the user to actually blow in it. Ozen did blow in her whistle, but neither Bondrewd nor Riko did in theirs. And yes, I suspect that Riko's dad became Lyza's whistle. So in a way, Riko has been traveling with one parent the whole time, to rejoin the other.
@@Mirality No, Torka (Riko's dad) is not Lyza's whistle. When Ozen has Lyza flashbacks you can see Lyza standing next to Torka and she already has her whistle, so it can't be him. Manga chapter 16 page 10, or anime episode 8 at 8:03.

Very much like all the symbolic themes through the movie, shame I missed so many :( But yeah, we will never forget Prushka as long as Riko has her whistle, RIP ;(
I hope bondrewd comes back, he’s a fascinating character
@@AlejandroAztec oh yeah I remember reading somewhere that the flamethrower guy was one of his strongest bodies.
You have no idea what's coming in the 6th Layer, it's very original.
i'm really amazed how good they wrote Bondrewd, you can literally tell he felt no malice and he meant everything he said
white whistles can activate relics, which is why the curse-repelling vessel reacted that way when ozen blew her whistle. riko blowing her whistle seemed to resonate with reg, which makes sense since he's a relic himself. he said his stomach got hot, so maybe she quicked the healing process unwittingly or something.
Remember: Ozen said that there was no body there, so her mom wasn't buried. Unless the manga confirms otherwise later on, Lyza could still be alive
The soundtracks in the series are composed by Kevin Penkin, whom was also responsible for the soundtrack in Rising of the shield hero, and Tower of God. Additionally he composed the song used in Star Wars Visions: The village Bride.
Kevin Penkin is amazing, been listening to his OST for MiA lately and it's beyond amazing
"This is some good weed. Where can I find it?" Out of the whole entire reaction, these words touches me the most.
It actually scares me that manga readers say season 2 will be darker and more fucked up😭
Yea ikr? As if human child experimentation, emotional trauma on said kids and just general unpleasantness wasn't already bad enough
@@LaDixCommentaries in the 2nd season you will see the best Chef-cook in the Abyss))) It will be "surreal hell" as for me.
Ha I can’t wait
Manga reader here. Haha yeah.
@@LaDixCommentaries it is another level of fucked up. Wait for it.
Lyzas whistle is not torka, because she already had a white whistle when she met him.
Damn, there goes my theory lol
In the wiki, Lyza's whistle comes from some unknown person called Doni.
We don't know who Doni was and how it was related to Lyza.
21:22 that devilish smile for my man Gueira's death 😭
Trully irredeemable
This show is so weird in how it makes you want to take a bath after watching it but fills your heart with a lot of warmth.
Bondrewd is a fantastic villain. He saved Prushka and gave her a few good years to gain her love and then rip her apart for his research. What a monster.
Great reaction! I didn't see anybody mention it, but the composer originally wanted to have the choir of children go quite one by one as they were used up in the fight against Reg, but that never happened, sadly, it would have been so much darker and so much more impactful!
in order for the blessing to occure, both need to have strong love for each other just like nanachi and mitty love each other, bondrewd and prushka also have strong love for each other, otherwise the blessing didn't came to be
37:32 no this is still in the 5th layer but near the 6th so you get affected by the 6th curse, the 6th is called the golden city, the capitial of unreturned and it was revealed in episode 3 when they were inspecting the map, and this doesn't look anything like it
MIA season 2 in a nutshell: which unrecognisable patch of blob will survive, stay tuned to find out
The second season is going to get a lot ickier, hope you're ready lol.
I don't think I will ever be lmao
I can’t wait
you know what.. since he got the bless he now can predict the future by seing the flow of the abyss.. thats why every reg attack cannot even touch bondrewd
Not realy. The monsters of the Abyss can read the changes in the forcefield instinctively. Nanachi can see it but doesn't know how to predict the movents of others from it. Same for Bondrewd.
Papa pole scene was not very well executed but makes more sense if you remember how she also helped with turning people into cartridges.
In theory it was intended to mean "the pole that means you can be a papa" and not... what it sounded like she meant.
R.I.P those kids down there. i loved that comment
@Someone101 Just one point... Bondrewd, actualy still "Feels" when it comes to some emotions. Not as a "Normal" person should, but he does actualy truly love every "Specimens" he "worked with." [Especialy Pruska and Nanachi.]
He is not "out" of all empathy. [This "Empathy" just take another form, twisted, indeed, but still there.]
[One more thing, he's experiment with Pruska and the others was a *Complete* success, he was "Blessed", just as plan, but when he said to Prushka that they're adventure would go on, he wasnt lying at all.... He knew that she would "Produce" a White Whistle trought this final experience, usable for him and due to they're encounter, Pruska's was counting on Riko to be used too. Even if on that point, you can count it like a "plus".]
Which is one more thing absolutly wonderful about this Character. [And there are soooo much more to say about Bondrewd....]
.....I think Reg lost his memory EXACTLY for firing the last shot on ep1...........not due to electricity....., or this one would do the same to worse.....
Ok if you have anything i can aws i will but this is a fact that this movie didnt tell
1-Bondrew(i will call him Bw from now) had modifly his body too the eye is a giveaway
2-Bw him self have alot of bouty on his head oversea becoz takeing kid for oversea is bad
3-alot of umbra hand is a bouty hunter who come for his head
4-zoraholic is can spard you mind form touch that mean if he want to he can touch Rico and it all over
5-he use Zoaholic only to ppl who let him use his body as host
6-Rico and team didnt destroy Zoaholic Bw ask them not to do it and they didnt want to risk that. Yes nobody in umbra hand can win Reg but if 20 of them aim at Rico at the same time Reg cant help with that .
7-Wakuna and Surajo are go down from 5 layer to 6 layer befor Rico met Bw
Sry for not that good in english tho
I had a hard time trying to read what you said
@@cleanclouds yep i know sry
Funfact: bondrewd’s VA is the same as final fantasy’s Sephiroth.
Пускай я ничего не понимаю, но мне нравится реакция этого молодого человека на происходящее на экране
awww.....you found about best dad!
Ok, so do you have any questions after rewatch? Also, there's less than a year left to wait for the second season and trailer is already out)
Question regarding mostly to what the "your worth" is and what the "blessing" actually means in detail. Am I right to assume that the cartridges were to protect Bondrewd from the curse?
@@LaDixCommentaries yep
26:34草
i like how you did it at 48:35
Ah so many people here just get Bondrewd. Good, good.
Bondrewd truly set a high mark for a masterpiece of a villain
