    Excellent, comprehensive introduction to 2-column proofs. I like the integration of geometry and algebra in the 3rd example. I haven't seen much of this variety proof, but it's great practice!

    Thanks...I choose to offer full lessons since many channels are just examples. I did start breaking my new videos down into segments by time so if you are searching for something specific you can go directly there. This is one of my early videos and I have learned a lot since my inception and tried to make improvements as I learn:)

    Professor RobBob ,thank you for a basic Introduction to 2 Column Plane Geometry Proofs. Writing proofs in Geometry is challenging, however all students must understand that this is a different way of thinking and definitions, and theorems must be memorized for usage.

    On the example with the segments... my math teacher taught me to say, say on step four, substitution prop. of equality... is that wrong?

  • @ArmaKiri
    @ArmaKiri 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @E Lee "def. of" means definition of, which would be of equality or of congruence...Anything to add Profrobbob?

    • @ArmaKiri
      @ArmaKiri 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Filmscraft If something is equal to something else, then your next step would be to say that they are congruent. You would say def. of congruent (angles/ segments) If they're congruent, then you would put in statements that they're congruent, and you would put def. of (angles/ segments) Def. of equality is different. If it says XY = XY, then you would put reflexive prop. of equality.

    One thing that's making it a little hard for me to understand proofs is that the axioms, postulates and theorems have different names and definitions in different textbooks. I'm wondering if there is a standardized book/list for the fundamentals that mathematicians draw from to write these proofs.

    Why would I ever have to state that something is equal to itself (aka use the reflexive property) when doing these proofs? Like if there is a case when something isn't equal to itself.

    • @profrobbob
      @profrobbob  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sebastian I agreed with your sentiment when I was in school, and in a way I still do. But, proofs must be structured in an exact, logical sequence, and no fact can be taken for granted. It is like writing a computer program where you must tell the computer everything it must do or prove in the correct sequence.

    • @Majskolvenz
      @Majskolvenz 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ProfRobBob As I programmer I can say that the analogy doesn't work, or at least it doesn't work to explain why the reflexive property is necessary. You never assign a variable to itself in computer programming, it's redundant and your IDE (a type of text editor often used by programmers) would likely notify you about it. You would only have to make sure that you actually created the variable in the first place and assigned the desired value to it before working with it. Just wanted to inform you.
      Thank you for the videos by the way. I have plowed through a bunch of them and I'm learning a lot. Geometry and trigonometry is very applicable in game programming which is one of my hobbies.

    • @profrobbob
      @profrobbob  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sebastian :D, I love it! I need to come up with a different argument now!!! How about this... If you are proving two triangles are congruent and they share a side, saying something like AD is congruent to AD will not only state that the segment is congruent to itself, but the two parts of two different triangles are congruent which you may later use in the proof. Like, these two triangles are congruent due to SAS. I dabbled in programing in high school (stone age) but that has been long forgotten. I am glad you are enjoying my lessons:)

    • @Majskolvenz
      @Majskolvenz 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ProfRobBob I can see how it would add to the proof in the scenario you described. Thanks for the information, not that I will ever have to write two column proofs, but I was curious nonetheless.
