I've not heard this performance for years. It is so good - poised, understated in the very best 'classical' manner. The solos in the second movement are delicate and precise. Peter Parkes at his best in shaping the reading with authority and understanding. The further we are away form Eric Ball's time the greater his contribution seems, because his self-declared "old-fashioned' language falls into historical perspective.
Only ever rehearsed this fine piece, never performed it on-stage. But it deserves an airing on the contest stage again. Eric Ball was a jewel. His homage to Mozart is a test and well worth a listen.
Love this piece. Played it on stage a couple of times and is a great test. This is a great performance. Anything by Fairey with Derek Jackson on BBb does it for me.
As Peter Parkes is conducting this particular recording, and presuming that it was recorded during his longest stint with the band (1990-95) then Brian Taylor would have been the solo Bb cornet. It certainly sounds lke his masterful playing anyway. I can find records of Peter Parkes working with Fairey as early as 1985, which still would have been during Brian Taylors time as the bands principal cornet, so it's a fair assumption that he's your top man.

Super show by a legendary team in a simply superb masterpiece by 'our' Eric. Bravo!

The BB's on this were Tiny and Phil Fox. The pic is of slightly later band that won everything!
Terrific piece, terrific performance, terrific direction. No more to be said, except that it should be used more often.
Mr.Ransome, you have hit that spot again with this.
Thank you !
Yep, it's a beauty, but l if l remember back l think the GUS version was even better.,
Certainly a wonderful performance by Fairey's but I think my Father took Harry Mortimers's place on the rostrum at those RAH finals. 1956
Who are the band members? Who playing the solo lines? Anyone?
