  • Resurgam by Eric Ball - New York Staff Band, Bandmaster Derek Lance. From Tom Scheibner Tribute Concert December 5, 2020.
    Program Note:
    The opening theme is a setting of a passage from the Apocrypha: 'The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, And no torment shall touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have die; Their departure was accounted to be their hurt, and their journeying away from us to be their ruin: But they are in peace'.
    This 'faith' motif recurs a number of times during the work and in contrast there occurs music charged with high emotion, sometimes harsh and discordant, in moods despairing, sorrowful, fearful.
    Finally the music achieves serenity and closes with a very/quiet statement of the opening tune.
    The tone poem is not based upon any specific program. 'Resurgam' - 'I shall rise again' - will evoke differing moods and images in the mind of each individual performer and listener, some personal, some universal.

    I played this under my hero, D. Johnson in St Kevern Band. Derek conducted from the soul, and this piece was written from the soul for the soul and played by the Salvation Army it couldn't be more perfect. God bless Derek and the Army

    This was an outstanding performance. Everyone who has played this piece, know how difficult it is to make it sound effortless to play it. New York Staff Band has a lovely sound here, and the soloists plays beautiful. Credit to the conductor, who has done a really great job with the band 🎼🎵🎶🎺😊

    Although written for brass band competitions this beautiful piece belongs to Salvation Army bands. As I believe Eric Ball once said when the ISB played it. “It had come home”. A beautiful performance. This piece of music brought me to the foot of the cross allowing the Holy Spirit to do his work of redemption. Thank you for recording this work.

      Peter, I realize you posted your comment at least a year ago, but I just read it. I was privileged to be in the Regent Hall when the ISB first played this, after SA publication. I was also seated in the same row as Eric Ball, who was several seats to my left. It was a moment never to be forgotten, to see the tears streaming down his cheeks and the immense impact of the music on everyone there. That was the scene you recalled above. God Bless.

    i've been involved in brass bands for over forty years SA & contesting bands. This work is my favourite it always brings me to tears. I think it is because it is touched by the hand of the divine as Mr Ball said '' it's the best of me''. Blessings many thanks

    This is just such a beautiful piece of spiritual music. It was my late fathers favourite piece of band music and whilst I have listened to it many times, both live and via other media, I have never heard it played so precisely as this rendition. The conductor was in full control and the band responded accordingly. Timing was spot on and at no point did I think it was running away. All sections played their part and it would be unfair to pick any out. Simply the best that I have ever heard and I seriously doubt that it could be bettered. Thank you so much and God Bless you all!

    Thank you SO much for this post. I had often wondered how the NYSB would interpret it. So clear... The recording is good, the feeling, and dynamics, and gaps, and pauses. Just great. Kudos to the dedication of all of you to produce this piece so well. Cheers

    Was the decision to play the bass drum part on timpani, a musical one or based on reduced players? What pitch was used for the timpani ? Thanks in advance.

    This is a superb performance !!!! Great interpretation and fantastic musicianship !!! Perfect intonation !!! I have always enjoyed this composition :-) but the first six notes have driven me crazy for many years - it reminds me of a very old tune that I haven't heard in ~50 years, but I cannot place the name of it (any suggestions?)

    • @Choppythebrassking
      @Choppythebrassking 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To me it sounds like the first 6 notes of the setting of "The Lord is my Shepherd" by Brian Boniwell

    • @markelvinstudio
      @markelvinstudio 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Choppythebrassking Perhaps Brian was influenced or inspired by Eric Ball's 1950's composition. Either way, two great pieces
