So I take it everyone who reads 1984 goes here to see exactly how the rhyme goes. It was driving me nuts only having the lyrics with no melody.
You didn’t sing it in school?
Now I wanna find the melody for "Under the chestnut tree, I sold you, you sold me"
You knew the next line!
Im reading 1984 now too lel.
Haha, yes!
1984 anyone?
Yeah currently reading it, so far very interesting
I cry so far for Winston. Just don't read the end, is so sad.

Ring ye Bells Aldgate,
Maids in White Aprons,
Ring ye Bells a St. Catherines,
Oranges and Lemons,
Ring ye bells at St. Clements,
When will you pay me,
Ring ye Bells at ye Old Bailey,
When I am Rich,
Ring ye Bells at Fleetditch,
When will that be,
Ring ye Bells at Stepney,
When I am Old,
Ring ye Bells at Pauls.
Thank you for that Fernando! There were some words there I didn't quite catch.
It's a little different from the scarier version we sang when we played the O&L game at children's parties in the 1950s. It was a scary game!
I’ve seen this song twice now- from Private Peaceful & the 1984! Both of which are classics
me too
Me from 1984 and dr who
Private Peaceful is why I am here as well!
Fun fact: the song oranges and lemons was first written in 1744 and sung by Tommy Thumb as a nursery rhyme was a way of remembering the topography of London by a widely illiterate population. People would have associated the bells and the churches with what happened in that part of town. Eventually it became a rhyme and there is evidence of it being a dance in 1655.
Another fun fact: many of the bells mentioned were cast at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry (near the Aldgate East tube station), which also cast the famous American Liberty Bell.
Am I the only one brought here by the book Private Peaceful

Me!
Beautiful voice.
Huh, so in this earlier version there were less bells included and no mention of the candle or chopper - perhaps it was written before the other belltowers were put up and had become associated with executions?
All of the churches mentioned existed at the time of the song's earliest printing, which was 1744. I believe the idea that the song has anything to do with executions comes from the addition of the last candle and chopper lines, but the earliest known version that includes that comes from 1840. The added lines to the song do form part of a children's singing game, that was popular in places like England and Australia even up until the modern day in some areas. It is possible that the lines were made up by children themselves as part of the game, and that they then ended up becoming synonymous with the song - although that is mere conjecture. It does say something to the enduring appeal of the song and the game associated with it, that over a hundred years after it began to be played it still remained one of the most popular children's singing games in the playground of my primary school (in the 1970s).
I totally forgotten that we sang that at school playtime in the 70s .
Ring every church bell in the land for a full day, the following day that land would be a better place. Not because they've stopped but because they rang.

I'm Indian and as I child I remember singing what I suppose is the Indian version of this rhyme.. I find it quite interesting, I suppose the it came to India when it was colonised by Britain, perhaps vice versa
For anyone that's Indian and is wondering what rhyme I'm talking about, remember the "lal kile mein kya hua kya hua" rhyme?
Id love to hear it and see a translation.
Anyone here because it’s actually one of the most famous and loviest English nursery rhymes from childhood?

The mark of a true Londoner: born within the sound of the Bow bells.

Clash City Rockers and William Castle's version of The Old Dark House brought me here. Thank you so much Catherine King! Long live England!

Ik this song from IT
I've not even heard of Private Peaceful, but I can't remember not knowing this nursery rhyme. I must have absorbed it before I could even talk, I guess. Don't children learn nursery rhymes any more?
Oh no nursery rhymes are not politically correct at least here in the USA. I taught mother goose nursery rhymes to my middle school students as part of our poetry unit.
I’m here because of pennywise the dancing clown. Pennywise Is heavily associated with the song oranges and lemons. Which is a song about old London where Mary popping resides. Both return every 20 years. 😊
hhhhh all respect or the guy who held his cough till she finished lol
i finally know what those creepy pennywise kids are singing lol. You’ll Float too🎈
I'm hear because of 1984 :3
I'm old, the version I knew was this: You owe me three farthings said the bells of St Martens, when will you pay me, said the bells of old Bailey. When I grow rich, said the bells at Shorditch, when will that be, said the bells of Stepney, I do not know said the great bell at Bow.
"WHERE ARE YOU ALICE?!"
Grew up on this nursery rhyme...but watching 1984 🤯🤯🥺
