She's being misleading. It's the deforestation that has caused this. When they deforested most of the Island the weather patterns completely changed and the place turned into mostly desert. No trees=no rain Just 50% of Australia’s forests and bushlands remain intact compared with pre-European arrival. The other 50% has been either permanently destroyed and replaced with another land use or is classed as degraded forests and bushlands-most of which was previously cleared but now regrowing vegetation of different ages. Australia has lost 27% of our rainforest, 19% of open forest, 11% of woodland forest and 28% of mallee forest since 1750. Australia is the worst offending country in the world for mammal extinctions. Fifty-five wildlife species plus 37 plant species have gone extinct in Australia. The greatest threat to koalas in Queensland and New South Wales is habitat loss. Our 2019 analysis found that 73% of all deforestation and land clearing in Queensland is linked to beef production. Between 2018 and 2019, over 92,718 hectares of koala habitat was cleared in Queensland in just one year. And around 73,285ha of that-or a whopping 80%-was destroyed for beef production. Carbon emissions released by land clearing across Australia are equivalent to about a third of the total emissions released by all of the coal-fired power stations in the country. Once native forest logging emissions are included, this is equivalent to at least half the carbon pollution of all Australian coal-fired power stations. Globally, new international agreements and corporate commitments to deforestation-free commodity supply chains will place increasing demand on Australia’s soft commodity sectors to transition to sustainable practices.
So she mentions climate change and you think she’s being misleading? Everything you described is in the context of it. Deforestation doesn’t cause a net flux of CO2 into the atmosphere like fossil fuel emissions do.
As an interesting side point, aboriginals burnt forest away to open it up as savannah grassland which was better suited to the animals they hunted, the first environmental vandalism in Australia.
Australia has amazing environmental engineers and yet the government does nothing. We need water capturing and permaculture techniques to re- green ALL areas, including deserts as they are doing to much success in Asia & Africa. This will help in creating microclimates, rebuild the water table, and decreasing the coming food & water scarcity crisis. 90% live only on the coast because the rest is too hot. Seaweed farms, solar power, re-greening desert land, using Purdue University reflective white paint in concrete areas, etc will drastically change temperatures. Small steps for big change

Because our government is captured by the fossil fuel industry plus the major fossil fuel companies feed money directly into politicians hands as well as the fact they have infiltrated the majority of Australian media as well as our very own science foundation CSIRO which resulted in hundreds of professional climate scientists being fired as well as them being silenced on the matter and the heads of the scientific board were replaced by fossil fuel lobbyists so dodgy reports like the one about fracking being good to try and create scepticism against scientists so they can still continue to pump out emissions without any penalties. These fossil fuel companies also pay fuck all taxes while the rest of us continue to get rises in taxes and worst part is our government subsidises the fossil fuel company at a rate of 11 million dollars a minute which could be better spent on renewables as well as making electric cars affordable but they won't because they love the enormous wealth they get but we end up not getting a single penny of that money which leaves us worse off than if we were to move towards green energy. @F. Friedrich Kling Hauss Yeah I know about that and its horrible, was just pointing out that the population here in my area of SA at least seems to be doing well
Its great that people care but talking about it 10 years after the effects started happening is not such a good plan. If we had done something about it BEFORE it was too late that might have been a better option. Humans wait for tragedy before lifting a finger. Its so typical. We were warned time and time again to reduce consumption. I feel so sorry for the next generation.
@DV8 *** that might be a projected figure that fails to take account of the effects of global warming. Famine pestilence and war will significantly reduce the number who survive. Large areas of the mid latitudes will become uninhabitable for humans, or any life, in the next few years. The collapse of society in the traditional temperate latitudes, will likely reduce medicine and healthcare back to the state of the dark ages. Life expectancy will drop significantly as infant mortality rises. The collapse in the size of the human population is the inevitable consequence of excessive use of resources on a planet where they are finite. Scientists have been modeling such dramatic population decline in other species for years. Our fate is little different to bottled yeast cells that drowned in their own excrement, or starve when their sugar supply is exhausted.
There is no profit to be made from a dead planet. Governments should be using their powers to ensure no one can profit from a dying planet. Ultimately, such measures will result from the breakdown of society and it's laws. Better if such measures happen earlier, when the elimination of the profit motive might save the planet. Certainly the reversal of the concentration of wealth in the hands of fewer and fewer people should be the objective.
What's more disgusting is the fact that the Ex Environment Minister had this in her drawer for months and it only took a change of government for them to put this out there.

We should have done something in the 70s when scientists started to realize that we are seriously mucking things up. How can we in America help...? Imagine a global initiative that didn't see the fossil fuel companies as enemies but helped them make this rapid change across the planet. We have the technology and know-how already to improve upon all of it. Foster the right way to live in accord with nature AND keep it protected so that it protects us. We CAN make this change. There IS still time. There are even ways were we can ALL profit from this massive change. Including the big oil companies. It just makes sense.
America needs to get it's own house in order first and it has still got quite a way to go on that. Realistically, while tackling these issues together is important, it is on every nation to sort out their own affairs as enviromental impact and climate change doesn't respect international borders. No matter what any one nation does, it won't help much if not enough other nations are pulling their weight. It also requires accepting things change. There were probably quite a few industries such as horse breeding that were impacted by the advent of the automobile but accepting that older industries and technologies lose value as we develop is important. Big Oil simply isn't going to remain as profitable as it has been if we make the changes we need to. That requires those companies to either shrink or change into not being Oil companies anymore.

Australia digs up about 500 million tons of coal per and puts it on boats for export. That is Aussie 'emissions'. I visit Kangaroo Island in 2006 and loved it.

As an Australian your completely full of poo. Total rubbish. The bushfires in 2019 did the damage.
Very simplistic answer written to confirm one viewpoint not including all the facts.
Beef is one of their chief exports. Australia is the 2nd largest beef exporter in the world after Brazil!
@@janb3625 Bullshit. Never happened. ridiculous. The desert is not an emptiness, it is an eco-system with it's own unique animals and plants which are magical and would die out if we tried to turn it into something else. Build a lake, and another set of animals go extinct.
Australia is having a bad government and in general Australians don’t care. Such a precious country. Peoples greediness is higher then protecting, preserving species and environment

In the election before last (2019) the then-opposition Labor party ran on a pretty strong climate change mitigation platform and got destroyed in the election after the Murdoch press waged a propaganda campaign saying it would destroy the economy etc.
Then later that year came the fires, and I think maybe it woke people up a bit. But Labor took the message from the loss that campaigning strongly on climate change action was politically risky, so it was not as emphasised at the last election. Still, getting the LNP out of office this year (finally) is a start, at least.

Climate change is also having a big impact, although food system is a hugely emitting sector.
Cattle raised on pasture is good for the earth. Mono crops, chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and gmos are bad for the earth.
There is a lot of factors at play but your right that agriculture is a major one. Our energy and transport sectors are probably the other two biggest, with so much gas and coal being mined here and Australia being so vast and most shipping done by truck.

@My Beautiful life and I didnt think Australians understood irony or sarcasm.
@DV8 *** well you will be pleased to know that the planet is doing something about the over population problem. It's killing off the humans.
Hell is on Earth and we have all of it to be blamed for.

If animals die because of natural causes, then we should not be worried about it too much. It is the cycle of the nature. Those bush fires have a purpose in the nature. We should be worried more about man-made causes like deforestation for human habitation and cultivation.
Yeh I was thinking the same but more than likely and what if a group or organisation started the 'bush fires' with a purpose to go hand in hand with the deforestation because they are sick and tired of too many kangaroos and koala bears and they want to expand their territory and these animals are getting in the way... 'terrorists'.

No one talks about reducing the number of cars on our roads and relying on public transport more. In many Australian cities, towns the public transport is very poorly developed or almost non existent. Too much land is cleared and used for development as well. Mining is another huge problem.

Gas-guzzling America needs to sort itself out.
We don’t need American’s help because we have got Taliban with us. Allahu Akbar!!!! 🔫🔫🔫🔫🔫🔫🔫
