Since First lost the Scotrail franchise the Caledonian Sleeper services have been operated by Serco. Serco have 4x class 92 loco's, 1 class 86 & this class 87, (87002). The class 86 & 87 were intended to be used just for the empty stock movements between London & Wembley yard. However due to the unreliability of the class 92's (which had been in storage for many years before Caledonian Sleeper bought them) they've recently been using 87002 and putting it back where it belongs, hauling the sleeper all the way down the WCML across the border to/from Scotland. So this was my first time being hauled by a class 87 for over 10 years since the days when Virgin used to operate now. Now this loco 87002 is the only fully functional class 87 left in the UK! So it's pretty rare and very lucky to have it for haulage again.
The sound of a classic AC locomotive really triggers some memories from the Intercity & Virgin days of loco hauled stock! Fantastic!!
    Thanks for watching!

Ahh the memories!! Nothing better than a front window thrash behind an 86/87. Some of the runs to Euston were just awesome!! Shame it's just a memory 🤘👍

They had this locomotive back in the 70s. Sure, it was a Siemens. But it was pretty good. But instead of electrification British Rail was dieselized to death. Seeing this loco on the East Coast Mainline time and again is a triumph. Now electrification of the Great Western Mainline is completed aswell. An elderly friend of mine fought for electrification from the 60s onwards all his life. Last week (at the age of 82) he took a train journey on a brandnew class 800 in electric mode from London to Bristol. There is still a lot of electrification work to be done but now that 3 mainlines are completed for the first time I have the feeling that we are winning!

Love the "Ghost Whirl coming from the Class 87 and 86" - reminds me of journeys in my childhood from Warrington BQ to Preston in 70;s - 80's travelling on these two iconic classes

Scottish NS Rail Fan How was the ride? Did you sleep in a berth? We are looking to book tickets for July and I was wondering how the ride/sleep was. Thanks!

87002 was for ECS / the emergency replacement for any shameful 92's. If 86101 had the better ETH equipment, that of 87002, that could also be an emergency replacement as it was a test bed for the 87 equipment converted at Crewe, (and still retains the conversion) alongside 86102 & 103 - from which all three of these /1's were originally numbered 86201-203. ;)

    Serco have 6 Class 92s (92010, 92014, 92018, 92023, 92033 and 92038), 2 Class 86s (86101 and 86401), 1 Class 87 (87002) and a few Class 73s.

Did you seek the permission of the train company and crew. I am travelling on this service to Fort William in june and wouldn't mind doing a bit of filming.

plenty of footage of trains leaving and entering Euston but not many showing a nice window bash on board right up to the buffer stops. hate units. give me coaches and a loco any day......nice footage rounding the Stafford curves too into the rising sun....

Many of your videos would be very welcome and would get excellent 'airing' on the "Caledonian Sleepers, Past-Present-Future' Facebook page. Do you have a problem with my linking some to that group, with proper accrediation?

You appear to have spent most of the journey hanging out of the window - well done. I hope you received a refund on your sleeper berth. A really enjoyable documentary of life at night on the railways from Scotland to London.

Forgive me for asking, but why should the author receive a refund? The journey was made after all, the choice to stand at the window could not be anticipated by the company. These sleepers make enough of an operating loss as it is.

I thought I made it clear:
Paid for an unused berth.I thought that unused goods could be repaid.
I accept that the journey was made hanging out of the window - Oh! fuck it - My comments
were made in gest - fuck-off.

+cluxseltoot Erm- no that would be like standing in the corridor on a daytime service and expecting your seat fare be refunded. It's not as if they'd resell the berth... (And get some manners when you post on a public site.)

While the video is great, and in a grand scale, you sure are trustworthy about your own applied shooting techniques. Holding your camera through a window opening on the coach's entry door does seem a little treacherous to me. Between a heavy gust of wind catching you off guard, or the rail side debris or the weedy shrubbery:which is ready to calamitize the possible loss of ones camera, and could cause you a rather expensive loss. Near the end of the video, when the locomotive is just clearing an underpass, a very woody, and weedy shrub is growing out into the trains path, and whips against your camera. If that would have happened to me, It would have given me a time to pause and reflect about the possibly of enacting a modified videoing procedure.

Timothy M You only have to look through my channel to see how many times I've done it. As long as you're paying good attention to what's approaching you'll be fine. Anything much heavier than the small shrub you see touch my camera would have been removed either by a train or network rail themselves and that won't do me much damage. On the mainline where trains are at speed shrubs are knocked back by the force of the train anyway. Thanks for your concern, but I have done it plenty of times to know the risk & benefits of doing it.
