I have an H4N that I intend to use at the "Rally to Restore Sanity" for field interviews I will later incorporate into my podcast. I have to say that these videos are outstanding and saved me a ton of time trying to figure out the manual as it relates to the best settings for that environment...these videos literally pointed out such a scenario with recommendations for settings...brilliant job, thank you. :)
i bought zoom 4h from amazon the only thing i can't find the record format ... so when i follow your steps menu >>> record >> i find two steps : auto rec and file name ... and also when i press the bittern number 4 for short cut BUTERN didn't work ... i want to change the record format to 48khz/24 bit so why i can't find it under rec .. you think i should format the machine to factory reset thank you
Thanks!! Is there any way to disable use of one of the microphones temporarily, so as to only have one cardiod recording pattern instead of to for recording vocals.
I just bought an H4N, but I can't figure out how to capture the card from the H4N to my computer. I have plugged in the card and the wire, but my computer doesn't prompt me. Do you have a vid for this?
Over at The Discriminating Gamer, we use the Zoom H4n for audio recording for our videos. For most of my board game reviews I've used a Wav file, but I've noticed that when I tried to record longer audio sessions- even though the display told me I had 2+ hours, it usually states the card is full after about 45 minutes. Anybody else have that problem? If I start recording game sessions that run up to 2+ hours, should I use the variable MP3 format? Will it still be useable audio quality for the videos?
Hey The Discriminating Gamer! I'm not the creator of this video or anything but I have been in the film industry for almost 12 years and I'm currently working at a professional production house where we deal with this kind of problem sometimes. I think I can answer your question! WAV is the full deal, uncompressed, full spectrum, everything. Large file size, but the most precise sound. Generally not used for distributing songs on CDs or anything because they're just too dang big. MP3 is a codec that only represents some of the sound in an attempt to cut down on file size but still get a good approximation of the sound. A larger bitrate means a more accurate reproduction, but even the highest (320 kbps) will still not be *exactly* the same as CD quality. Most people can't tell the difference for bitrates above 192 kbps, though, so anything above that tends to work out pretty well. You're going to use a lot less energy (battery wise) and data (memory card wise) to record in .mp3 and I promise the audio will be very usable at the end. Happy recording! :P
I shot a live show at 23.986fps, and recorded sound on my zoom h4n at 44.1ghz 16 bit. I synced it up and about 5 minutes into the footage the audio starts to drift out of sync. Did I use the wrong audio settings?
I will assume your footage is at 23.986 due to being recorded on a DSLR ?? - Either way try setting your editing software to interpolate your footage as 24fps rather than the 23.986. That may help your sync problem.
Loss of sync is common when devices aren't exactly recording at the same rate. As a DJ who does video editing, I understand how to actually adjust the audio source playback rate so I can "beatmatch" it to the film audio. It's a lot of fine tuning the decimal places of the playback rate of one of the sources. Once you know what this magic number is, you can apply it every time.
Wes....this is an easy fix. Your camera shoots audio at 48,000 Hz. If you record external sound with your H4N, you will need to record .wav 48,000 Hz as well not 44,000 Hz. This was an issue I had in the past and through some research discovered what I had done wrong. The frame rate setting on your camera has nothing to do with audio drift. It worked great for me. Good luck.
I recorded my band recently and I used the Zoom H4n recorder, ( a total of 30 minutes ) We played 9 songs but all 9 songs are under one folder? Is there anyway of putting each song in one folder?
I don't know enough YET for this to be meaningful. I mean the difference in kHz and WAV bit rate. Without some foundation in these rate differences it makes little sense.
Did i really bought a Sennheiser mke 400 few hours ago?? the seller told me it was really great? As well as a lot of reviews on youtube. No fucking way, trust me. I never heard as much as noise as that. It's a noise recorder. I will swap it to get a Zoom H4N for 50$ more. Gosh
my h4n start and show only the logotype off zoom all the time and no start, and when i connect it to pc right please wait... how i reset it?anyone can help?
why is lo cut mentioned in the title when it's not in the video?
Petter Napstad TH-camrs aren't very bright
Wow, and excellent explanation of formats and trade-offs. I'm surprised more sound buffs haven't found this video.
is there any video that actually shows what is lo cut in zoom recorder.

I had the same issue. Tried using the ac plug - and it worked! Thanks!
you spent the whole video talking about the recording quality vs the Mic Lo cut
Thanks! My rec was on Auto and I couldn't figure out how to disable...

What audio setup and mic did you use to record this video?

4:18 Note: The shortcut is disabled when you're in STAMINA mode.
+Adrian Abonce thanks!
How do i convert a recording that is 4chn to mp3, so that i get the input from the mixer and the microphone input from the crowd?
my h4n isn't showing the comp/limiter. it goes from lo cut to monitor and the the comp/limiter isnt there. can anyone help me please?

RossMonsterMedia Thanks a lot! I appreciate it!
Of course! Glad I could help!
***** Thanks a ton!
How do I record a safety track, do I need to set the H4nzoom settings?
Hey mate I'm using a rode ntg4+ with my zoom h4npro it records a very high air noise in the background not sure what I'm doing wrong
How do you hook-up the Zoom H4n with a mixer???
@geekstinkbreath94 use plug not battery see what happens ... Maybe the power saving mode hinders that use
When I go into "REC" on my Zoom. The only options it gives me are: "Auto Rec" and "File Name" . . . that's it. Why is the one in this video different?

Yes, B cam was a dslr. Thanks for the help. So I'm assuming 44.1ghz is for 24p?
I don't think sample rate matters in regards to synching with frame rate.
Did you fix the problem in the end?

Thank you just got one and shooting today
I learned something

Robert Thomas so each songs needs a file. each time you do a song set up a new file.
@JoinedForcesFilms I was same problem yesterday but I solved this problem :) you should close ''stamina mode''.it is on the battery.
I dont have a compressor Limiter
The explanation is very clear and the title is useless. I still don't know about the low-cut filter.
The best of
Najbolji magnetofon...

damn that 10 years🤣
This made me lol

This says nothing about the Lo Cut
Title is misleading
so much video, so little answers

you have to turn of battery saving mode in the battery department fo fux this issue
