We are so sorry for the audio. We had to delete some music with the new TH-cam-AI and it doesn´t work out as expected. The audio is much better in the next updates! :)
Beautiful. I'm Portuguese and very glad that you felt in love by this land and give it a new chance to be admire again. Thank you. Be careful with the prevention of fires.
Thank you so much! Portuguese people are always so kind and helpful 🫶🏼 We are already signed to a fire prevention project, that will help us to get rid of all the mimosas and eucalyptus
@@Montinho_Monchique The medronho bush is really a fire resistant vegetation that you should cultivate and later to harvest the fruit to make bagaceira (aguardente - fire water), it's a win-win situation. So, get rid of eucaliptos and mimosas and go for Cork oaks etc. Ask the locals what's the best due to the microclimate and soil properties. You're so lucky to have 2 water streams and that's a treasure in Algarve. Get informed about water legislation too. Good luck on that project. I'm a subscriber already. Cheers
The best start you guys could have was making friendship with the neighbours and previous owners. There’re no better people to know your land than them! The land is beautiful and rich, congratulations ❤
Also, a bit envious. Place looks wonderful. But the work on that property is gargantuan. Just the thought of switching from our decent infrastructure 10 ha property in Sweden to something like that gives me a hit of angst. I'm now toying in my head with the logistics of just hauling all my equipment and tools from this place to the other end of Europe. That relocation would be a big project.
It is absolutely gigantic and sometimes it is a bit overwhelming.. but thinking in small steps and from project to project helps a lot. Hopefully it all works out 😬 But 10 ha in Sweden doesn’t sound bad as well! Wish you all the best with your land and maybe your move to Portugal?! 😅
I think you chose a good place to live. Monchique is a really nice town. Wouldn’t mind myself retiring there. Have you considered planting strawberry trees (arbuto unedo) in the slopes of the hills? It’s endemic to the region and could give you a good income from producing medronho - there’s an association of medronho producers in Monchique, I think it’s Confraria do Medronho Monchique. I’m sure you could learn how to produce medronho from them. And the trees are resistant to wildfires. People plant them at the edge of their properties for protection from wildfire. Regarding the mill for living purposes, I would advise you to ask locals if that’s a good ideia, because I think that those streams may be prone to flash flooding in heavy rain. I would not mind glamping at your venue once it’s up and running.
Thank you for your words! We have a lot of medronho on our land. Our neighbor uses them for years to make liquor. Yes, Monchique is such a nice place with a lot of potential. It is just sad to see that many houses are empty and turning to ruins..
Any possibility of restoring the mill dam? A lake that big would be a fantastic resource, even if it means destroying some prime garden land. The soil can potentially be removed and put somewhere else.
We are thinking about it, but aren’t sure if it is possible.. the mill will be the last project and therefore we now do not know what is possible. But having the pond restored would be absolutely wonderful 🌿🙂
Yes, you are totally right. It is an aqueduct with a water channel. Our neighbor, who grew up in this land said that it is at least 250 to 300 years old
A wonderful property with amazing potential. You might seriously consider getting a large diesel powered wood chipper that will be a huge help in clearing the land.
Yes, we already thought about it. At first we need to get necessary Infrastruktur and than will make a long term plan for the land. A wood chipper will for sure be necessary 😅
I was wondering about fire risk before you mentioned it. Cut down all nearby trees and have a large retaining ponds around the important structures with large sprinklers that can be used to soak the surrounding structures. Having a few natural fire breaks will help to around the important structures.
Thanks for your comment! Actually the fire prevention is a big topic for us and also the municipality. We participate in a EU funded pilot project to prevent fires. We will do an update about that soon :) in general it’s the law here to clear the land 50 meter around houses but the project opens up many more great opportunities not only to reduce the fire risk but also to generate sustainable income for the population 🌞🌱
Just caught up with your videos so far looking forward to following your journey 😊😊😅😅 The project looks great and will keep you very busy for a long time. A plan is a must as you could get lost in so many projects, good luck.😅😅
sieht nach nem guten plätzchen aus, würde auch gerne so ein fleclen land haben. irgendwo bei Monchique sind glaub ich auch @Mrandmrsadventure mit ihrer alten wassermühle die sie renovieren
Very nice property and life project! Congratulations on escaping the rat race. At 5:41 you show a small shelter area, the roof sheets look like they are asbestos. If they are (or you are not sure), wear SERIOUS protective clothing/breathing mask when removing this and anything like it you may find in the ruins. I would even consider making a deep hole somewhere to bury the topsoil from below it.

Yeah you’re right! We will remove the bamboo soon! It’s good for building but it’s invasive and it takes up too much space down there. We want to plant more fruit trees there 🌱

You could use those reeds that need to be removed as fencing, by weaving it. It could also be used in gardening for trellis work and vines.
