Dear Bill, We have this exact dryer. Your videos were invaluable for repairing it. The roller bearings were gone. We decided to replace the belt as long as we had the machine apart. I was dreading reattaching the belt but after watching your video and following your instructions it was super easy. Thank you! Your videos save us a lot of money by repairing it ourselves.

Thanks for posting this video I replaced something 15 years ago and a drum roller today, I don't think I would have gotten the belt back on without your help! I think the dryer was in the house when I bought it 45 years ago and it's still going strong. Two adults and 3 boys, they don't build them like they used to. I guess there aren't a lot of 80-year-old guys that enjoy the challenge of replacing a noisy bearing or two.
    Again I Thank you.

Thank you very much! I could not for the life of me figure out how to properly connect the dryer belt to the motor shaft/pulley and idler pulley until watching your explanation. Using the left hand to raise the pulley and the right hand to pull the belt UNDER the pulley wheel and then connect to the motor shaft/pulley was the key. I watched several other videos, read numerous explanations, and looked at many illustrations but not a single except yours actually explained how to do it.

Thank you for making this super easy for a single mom of 3 teenagers who made horrible faces when I told them they'd have to hang a clothes line up and dry a load or two outside until I get the dryer fixed! I'm sure you've made this repair job a breeze for not only me but even people who could never see themselves handling this diy repair job all by themselves...
I watched this video about 2 years ago and I'm back just to make sure I'm getting it all right once again. I should have replaced the belt when I replaced the drum rollers back then...but then I wouldn't have gotten to scroll through and find your video. It's been saved of course 😊 And my old but reliable dryer is reliable once again!

THANK YOU!!! I may have just found this video in 2019! This is why TH-cam exists. First time home owner and just had that sinking feeling when you think your appliances are dying..then you get rational..and open up TH-cam..
I have the exact same dryer downstairs went to go grab my laundry and after it ran for about an hour it was still rather damp. Not normal at ALL! Wanted to see how much of it I had to take apart in order to get to the lint collector.. (alllllllll the way)
Because of your perfect video I now know it's as easy as I hoped!thank you again! Who knows maybe I'll find some lost socks while I'm in there! Operation Dryer begins!!!!!

Bill, thank you for making this video. It really helped me with my dryer. I can help folks out though. It seems impossible at first to do this but I came up with an idea. Simply use painters tape to align the belt to the drum.
I placed painters tape on the belt and taped it to the outside of the drum right where it was before it failed (on the rubber wear marks on the drum). This allowed me to insert the drum without moving the belt out of alignment. Once the drum was back in place, I simply did what you instructed and put the belt onto the tensioner and then looped it to the motor.
Once this was done, I turned the drum slowly (looking through the crack at the belt to see where the belt and tape were).
Once the tape parts of the belt start to get close to the tensioner, you simply reach in and pull them off. One at a time. Made this job VERY easy.
Anyway, thanks for the instructions. My dryer works perfectly now. :)

So Bill, after watching your video, I was above able to just reach under the drum after it was sitting on the rollers. I pulled the tension roller over as far as it would go and put the belt back on. I couldn't see what I was doing, but could visualize how it went together. Took a few tries, but it saved me some back strain. I really appreciate your guidance.

HUGE appreciation-watched this 10+ times & finally got it. its alittle stiff spinning but i esriously cant remember if it was always like that. my very old de410 had a small but effective backdoor & i used duct tape to hold the right side down over the drum-removed after attached to the thing with the spring & motor round thing. You made a nearly middle-aged woman very happy (and filthy dirty)-THANKS!!!!!

Thank you for saving our marriage. We couldn't figure out how to replace the belt around the pully for an Maytag Epic Gas Dryer and were screaming at each other for blaming the other for not looking at the old one before we (HE) pulled it out (lol). We watched other videos, but your explanation and video with the drum *out* saved us from divorce court! We needed to bring out our tiny mouse arms to do it, but thank you for showing it without the drum!!!! You might not think you help people, but YES YOU DO!!!!!! Marriage saved!!!!!!!

If you guys almost lost marriage over something like that then its time to take a hard look at your marriage and understand that the issue wasnt the dryer but is deeper and will continue to manifest itself through different situations until the underlying problem is resolved.

I usually make a cellphone video as i disassemble things, but didn't do it this time (drat!). One of the drum rollers was bad. I replaced the roller and then couldn't remember the belt routing. I know this belt material won't stretch, so i was baffled as to why i still had about 5 inches of slack with the belt all the way around the drum. This video made it clear. Thanks!

I almost gave up, I replaced the rollers, roller shafts and still had problems. You saved me with your things to check. Sure enough only 7 dollars more for a idler pulley. Works like a champ thanks so much! Plus there were no real wear tracks on the drum, so I thought it went in the groove. I think the groove is put there to make it easier to install the belt. First I get it running correctly in the groove then pull it back onto the drum.

  • @erikmellander9750

Thank you Bill. Yes you have to pretty much take apart the dryer to replace belt, rollers, idler pulley or drum slides. As a suggestion once you do have the dryer apart, take short video clips of spinning the rollers and idler pulleys, as well as the drum slides so you can show your local parts shop (if you buy them there vs online), so they can help diagnose and you get only what needs to be replaced.
Our machine was starting to squeak badly, figured it was the idler pulley or rollers going bad. Upon checking, the rollers were actually OK, needed a few drops of oil (I used 3 in 1) on the shaft which made them spin much easier and eliminated squeaking. I cleaned the idler pulley and also dropped some oil on shaft. While in there I replaced the drum slides which you might as well check and replace if they are worn along with changing belt. My cost for belt, 2 slide kits, and 1 bottle of 3-1oil from local parts store was $89. Although I can afford a service call or new dryer, I have fixed both my washer and dryers in the past. It saves money sure, but fixing things yourself starts to build your knowledge base of how and why things work, and builds confidence and self reliance. And as the great Red Greene says, “If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.”

Bill, good video - thanks. Your dryer has the ribs/grooves in the belt on the drum (at 2:15 in the video), and cloth side out. Some older Maytag dryers (like mine) have a different idler setup, where the idler is below the motor pulley, and the the belt goes cloth side to the drum so that the ribs end up in the grooves on the motor pulley. Also you point out (at 2:25) that the belt rides on the old wear mark. My dryer has a slight concave section or groove around the drum that seems just right for the belt. But it's about an inch behind the wear mark on the drum. Use the wear mark!, not the groove, else you'll have a floppy tensioner, a belt out of alignment, and no rotation. I did this. But looking back the way i did it, with the belt in that groove, is was easy to wind the belt onto the tensioner pulley and the motor pulley, and then drag the belt out of the drum groove onto the wear mark, which tightens up the tensioner pulley.
