This was very interesting for me. I wanted to see your approach and how it differs from what we would do at a guitar "factory" of sorts. Basically what we did after the final layer of polyurethane was flat sand with 800, to eliminate all of that "tangerine" effect. Then work up to 2500, with each grit sanding in a different direction (this helped to see which layer your scratches were in). Then finally polishing up with 2-3 compounds and a buffing wheel. A long process for damn sure, but the end product spoke for itself :D I just find it really interesting to see how everyone does the same basic principle, but with a different approach. -T

All the paint of Duplicolor is good, the clear coat is amazing, All I gotta do is Spray a few more light coats of Clear coat and buff and polish it, assemble it, and BAM! I am done. A dishwashing sponge is likely too abrasive and will just scratch it. Use an old cotton t-shirt that has been through the wash enough times to not have any lint.
Man, just finished the sanding part of buffing prep on the very first guitar I ever did, and it's pretty nerve-racking to see all that beautiful 2k shine out of the can be essentially gone, even though the surface is much smoother (despite just minor orange peel out of the can, the 2k stuff works great for that). Sure hope the buffing and polishing is going to restore the look it had ;) But my guitar is almost black (very dark blue), so I guess that might be skewing the impression right now.

And to add to the above, oh boy, did it come back. Looks amazing, if it wasn't for a few mistakes I made during the refinishing process (which I guess are way more visible to me than they would be to anyone else), it would absolutely look like a professional paint job. Especially once I applied some Maguire's Swirl Remover for that extra bit of gloss. I didn't say it before, so at least now - thanks you for all the videos you made for us to be able to (re)finish our guitars ourselves with such incredible results!
I got rid of the orange peel with 600, 800, 1000, 1500 and 2500. I used the Maguires with a handheld buffer/polisher, but it didn't shine up as much as I would of liked, fairly shiny, but not real glossy. Should I just try more polishing passes?
@@BradAngove , Maguire's ultimate compound. I thought it was a one step, but I guess I need the polish. I was also using a lambs wool bonnet, but will get a set of foam pads for the polishing.
Please help.... :( So I once used a good amount of Rustoleum automotive lacquer, waited a week, and polished with turtle wax AUTOMOTIVE polish. Even after thoroughly wiping off excess polish, it seemed to make the paint softer and easy scratchable. Am I supposed to wait and give it time after polishing to finish curing, or am I using the wrong combo of polish and paint?

The stripe around the outside is a binding. Does your guitar have one? You can do white first or black, you just need to account for that with the way you tape. Labels are also an option, but if you’re clear coating over them you will see ridges around the edges.
Thank you Brad. That 2k Spraymax in a can was super surprising. I managed to get the entire can on my guitar in 3 hours outside on my boat in 80° weather in the sun. Very limited orange peel I might add. It has been 24 hours and I have it baking in the sun again. It had about 5 hours of baking yesterday and when I took it in at night had almost no smell to it and was already rock hard. I will continue to put it out for the next 5 days before the polish process. I couldn't be more happy having watched your videos.
Very glad to hear that it worked well for you. It should be ready to polish after a day or two. Generally we try to avoid direct sunlight on finishes while they are drying, but it’s not a huge issue with this stuff.
The Enamel was way less forgiving. Didn't flash according to spec, stunk to high hell,had to sand out wrinkles. Let the enamel part cure for a week before 2k after the initial f***up and resprayed and let it cure for a week. Used a scotchbright to prep for the 2k clear. The result was better than expected. Btw, if you have the right temp.....the 2k will go on thick without runs. I even waited 30 mins between the initial light spray before laying it on. The ENTIRE can went on in 3 hours with 30 min inbetween coats. I will post the final in a week after polish. Amazing stuff that 2k!!!!
Great video Brad ! I'm working on my first solo kit and your videos have been very helpful. My question is how do I know if I have applied enough polyurethane? Basically I used a full spray can of MinWax Fast-Drying and I am trying to decide if I should sand/apply more or move on to polishing ??
I do typically find 3-4 coats of clear adequate. Which is why, for Darryl who says he has applied a full can, I don’t think he needs more. That’s plenty.

I'm doing my first guitar and don't have all the sanding and polishing powertools. So I just wanted to get some insight before I start ordering things.
Yes, you can polish by hand. You will just need to be aggressive about it and it will take quite a while. It’s a lot of work but can certainly be done.

Hi Brad, I am wondering why when I level sand the wipe on poly even with like 10 coat that I let dry for several hours I remove some of the stain. Specilaly around the edges. Also where did you by your "foam pad wheel" Canadian Tires?? Sorry for my english I usally speak french. Thank's in advance
Those coats go on thin. It sounds like you just haven’t built up enough poly, or you are sanding too heavily. Finish doesn’t build up as much on edges. Try to avoid sanding right at the edges. I got some of my foam pads at Canadian tire and some at Gregg Distributors.
You can use a heat gun, paint stripper, or sandpaper to remove old clear. Generally speaking you would sand during the polishing process to level everything out.
At 7:15 something looks like a bump. Is that an odd reflection? Maybe I should have considered polishing the single guitar I refurbished last year. That shine looks attractive.

Hi Brad -- back in der auld days, before foam pads ever existed, we used "lamb's wool" pads for polishing (works great.) Just wondered if you had a preference for one or the other. Beautiful job! Will we get to hear this one play?
I sometimes start with the wool pads and then move on to foam. You’re less likely to burn through your clear with foam, but it’s a little slower. You will get to hear this one fairly soon I hope.

Q for any guitar finisher out there. I recently finished my 1st guitar using an auto grade paint from a can,, followed by a couple of coats of the 2K clear coat. Shortly thereafter I got a bunch of micro cracks on both sides of its surfaces. Any ideas as to what might have caused them? Thanks
@@BradAngove ooh, maybe the night time temperature dropped too much. I applied the 2K in my garage during the day time. 1 coat on a Sat, 1 on Sun. Typical fall temps in L.A. highs in the 70s(or higher), but would drop into the 50s at night. Thank you for your time

If you’re perfectly happy with it you don’t need to polish at all. If you’re going to polish, you should sand it smooth first. The scratches will come out if they are fine enough. Use fine paper like 2000 grit or higher.

So, I went with the Duplicolor enamel matte clear coat over my Duplicolor gray lacquer base...It looks pretty sick! However, there are a few minor dust particles that got in on the last coat (damn!). Should I wait a few days, scuff lightly with like 1500-2000 and re-coat? What's the easiest way to get these dust particles out? And if I'm looking for a matte finish, I shouldn't wet sand or polish at the end, correct? Thank you sir!

I’ve tried the cheaper wax but you get a sub par product in my opinion compared to the 3m. 3 m is what auto body shops use on cars so if you are using a urethane 2 k finish like on a car the 3 m is the way to go especially for my customers . Just put out better quality products

Do you have any methods for clearing dust from your guitar before clear coating? I try to inspect as close as I can but by the time I'm done putting on my clear coat sure enough there's either dust or something else in the finish that is too deep to sand out.
I generally do a light sanding (depending on the circumstances) and a careful cleaning before I clear coat. Then it’s just a matter of taking care to reduce the dust in your environment before spraying.

Damn man, the caps lock is aggressive haha. I disagree with you on the grits. It’s not about being able to tell the difference. You can polish out 1200 grit and not tell the difference. It’s just way faster and easier with these higher grits, and the paper may be expensive, but it lasts forever. I’ve been using the same pieces of 3000 and 5000 grit for a year.

I don't call that a nice finish, sorry. It's shiny but all wavy and bumpy, You needed to level sand that finish before buffing it

That type of paint should be left closer to a month before polishing.

Generally I would say a full can should be plenty.

I would have done the exact same thing on the river side; just carefully around the rivets haha.

I’ll have to go back and check. I don’t recall seeing any bumps. Polishing isn’t always necessary, but it does help get that full glass-like look.
Do you have a video of painting a raw body using grain filler? If so, how do you apply & sand grain filler dorrectly

If you don’t have a pedestal polisher generally you would just do it by hand. It’s a long process, but that’s the only option.

I am planning to polish by hand and unfortunately all I get around here (in Germany) is microfibre ... what are the alternatives when aiming at polishing by hand only? Thanx for your help in advance. I have an old acoustic. I don't know if the clear is lacquer or polyurethane. I got an autograph on it with a Sharpie, and I've noticed it's beginning to wear off, so I wanna clear the autograph to protect it. Any tips on this?
Yes. It’s probably lacquer. Check out my video on how to protect autographs in your guitar haha.

Hi Brad -- back in der auld days, before foam pads ever existed, we used "lamb's wool" pads for polishing (works great.) Just wondered if you had a preference for one or the other. Beautiful job! Will we get to hear this one play?
I sometimes start with the wool pads and then move on to foam. You’re less likely to burn through your clear with foam, but it’s a little slower.

What type of compound i can use for polishing.?
I used 2k glamorous over stained wood and spare ylu didnt seal it enough. There are tiny little bubbles on it. Anything I can do?
Wait 24 hours, sand with 800 grit so your next coats will bond and hit it with another 3.

Q for any guitar finisher out there. I recently finished my 1st guitar using an auto grade paint from a can,, followed by a couple of coats of the 2K clear coat. Shortly thereafter I got a bunch of micro cracks on both sides of its surfaces. Any ideas as to what might have caused them? Thanks
Did you have any significant temperature changes while the paint was curing?
@@BradAngove ooh, maybe the night time temperature dropped too much. I applied the 2K in my garage during the day time. 1 coat on a Sat, 1 on Sun. Typical fall temps in L.A. highs in the 70s(or higher), but would drop into the 50s at night. Thank you for your time
That could be it. The paint might have cooled and shrank, causing it to develop small cracks where the film separated.
Hey Brad, just finished applying a can of 2K cc, turned out really nice and glossy.
My question is should I scuff or sand before polishing? I'm afraid to ruin such a nice CC! Will the sanding marks disappear with the polishing?

If you’re perfectly happy with it you don’t need to polish at all. If you’re going to polish, you should sand it smooth first. The scratches will come out if they are fine enough. Use fine paper like 2000 grit or higher.

I used high-grit no-load sandpaper. This was the 3M trizact sandpaper.
How did you polish and flatten the top with the rivets?
Thank you for these videos, very helpful. Do you sand with the starting grit until you cant see anymore orange peel? Or does it go away while stepping up grits and compound, polish? Basically wondering how long I sit with 800/1000 grit before I start moving up.
I try to get 99% of the orange peel out with my starting grit.

How do you polish the sides of the guitar? Especially the "horn" section where a polisher wont fit. You also mentioned not to use microfibre cloths... what should we use?
A polishing pad or a soft, lint free cloth.

For hand polishing I generally use the lint free cloth. If I’m using a pad I just take one from my polisher typically and use it by hand.

So, I went with the Duplicolor enamel matte clear coat over my Duplicolor gray lacquer base...It looks pretty sick! However, there are a few minor dust particles that got in on the last coat (damn!). Should I wait a few days, scuff lightly with like 1500-2000 and re-coat? What's the easiest way to get these dust particles out? And if I'm looking for a matte finish, I shouldn't wet sand or polish at the end, correct? Thank you sir!
Make that 800, and you should be could. Aside from that, correct on all counts.

Fair enough haha. They aren’t cheap. If you’re on a budget, meguiars ultimate compound and ultimate polish do a good job.
I’ve tried the cheaper wax but you get a sub par product in my opinion compared to the 3m. 3 m is what auto body shops use on cars so if you are using a urethane 2 k finish like on a car the 3 m is the way to go especially for my customers . Just put out better quality products

If you don’t care if it’s flat, then you don’t need to sand it flat.
Not sure why you would really need to polish if you don’t sand though.
Okay i now get why the sand paper is useful what type of sand paper would you recommend me for minor scratches across the guitar body?
Go up to a very fine grit to remove the scratches from the prior grits.
Can i polish without sanding the clear coat first?
Yes, but that won’t flatten it out, you will just be polishing for gloss.

I get mine from a body shop that buys them in bulk haha.
Literally every home improvement store, automotive store, Walmart... I mean take your pick... they all have those grits and higher.

Do you have any methods for clearing dust from your guitar before clear coating? I try to inspect as close as I can but by the time I'm done putting on my clear coat sure enough there's either dust or something else in the finish that is too deep to sand out.
I generally do a light sanding (depending on the circumstances) and a careful cleaning before I clear coat. Then it’s just a matter of taking care to reduce the dust in your environment before spraying.

I started with a 320 grit sandpaper. Now i know why my finish has very fine scratches.

I use 2 micro fiber cloths. One to wipe it on very generously, one to wipe it off. No scratches or cloudiness. They should do sponsor me I recommend it to everyone and they love it

Damn man, the caps lock is aggressive haha. I disagree with you on the grits. It’s not about being able to tell the difference. You can polish out 1200 grit and not tell the difference. It’s just way faster and easier with these higher grits, and the paper may be expensive, but it lasts forever. I’ve been using the same pieces of 3000 and 5000 grit for a year.
