Hello Alex, when you drill, it's a good idea to pull the drill out from time to time to clear the wood chips out of the flutes, as they cause friction and overheat the drill bit.
The reason it's getting stuck is the drill bit will expand as it get really hot making it stick to the walls of the hole you already drilled.

Man I am loving this series so much. Every time i watch it makes me want to buy a farm property and build my own handmade building. It just seems like such a rewarding project

I've seen all the videos now (from now on I will follow whenever a video comes out), It's an intriguing series on an impressive build! I did quite some work with natural stones and restored some ruins here in Portugal, but working with those massive beams is something else!! All the best and stay safe. In theme with historic moments, greetings from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania! I see a lot of barns like this around here, usually built by old German settlers, I believe. It's really interesting to watch one man build like this and see how much work it must've been to do it all by hand! Also, at 19:56 the tool is usually called a come-along or a power puller, whichever you prefer.

I'm enjoying the build and am impressed by your dedication to continue despite the long periods where the only progress seems to be a bigger mess and more rips in your tarps. This one had to feel pretty good getting those frames banged out. You've got to come up with a better way to drag long timbers to the site. It seems like two wheels and an axel would suffice. Maybe someone has a two wheeled wheel barrow with a rusted out bucket that they'd be willing to part with.

I work as a videographer but have some general construction skills, taught by dad who was a general contractor building homes from the 1980s to the 2010s. I'd work with him on summers off from school. I am proud to say that he (with very little help from me) came out of retirement to built my "for ever" home for my wife and I. We are so grateful that we had this opportunity!
New England has a lot of old colonial era stone homes, stone walls, stone foundations, and stone barns. It's pretty difficult not to take a walk through the woods or a drive in the car without seeing old stone walls criss cross the landscape. I've always had an urge to construct something in stone, something that would be around long past my time, like I see in the stone structures across New England.
What your videos is teaching me is that I, a 30-something guy with some general construction skills might fare similarly or slightly better at building my own stone barn/workshop/studio, and that it is possible to take on with a strong enough will and DIY attitude. How did you convince your wife to let you tackle such a task, without knowing a timeline for construction? That's my only remaining barrier, convincing my wife, and possibly finding a good location on our property to place it.

When it gets stuck put it in revers and back it out, if it has revers.
Bosh makes good tools but it's not made for that.

I recently worked with a builder doing some renovations on my house here in Coffs Harbour Australia it is a very old house made of very dense heavy hard wood the carpenter put soap on the drill bit which made the drill go in a lot easier.
I have never seen a drill bit twist like that and not break. Nice job on the build this week.

Hi Alex, don't know what kind of drill bit's you're using but I use "wood owl" bits and they'll easilly deal with oak like that without any problems. Oh yeah, if your drill overheats. Take the bit out and run the drill at full speed without any load. The cooling fan will work faster to cool it down that way rather than just letting it cool on its own.
Lovely to watch your progress. I've long thought that mortices and tenons are a underutilised technique, so it really is pleasing to see you using it to the fullest. Modern builds just seem to take pieces of wood, place them in the direct vicinity of each other and attach them together using nails or screws. Where's the art in that when you can instead carefully craft massive pieces of wood and then watch them fit together like a big, heavy jigsaw puzzle? Much more rewarding. Pre drilling is not always good for me. The best way for me is to let the bit do the work.and not drive it too much. For me it is the start up that is the best

It looks like one of the reasons that the drill got stuck is that while it was far inside you angled it upwards when pulling.

dude, try to use reverse rotation (flag switch on the back of your drill) to unscrew a drill off the wood next time
12:40 Technically, it's a wasp, because the Latin word Vespa actually means hornet. The smaller ones we usually call yellowjackets are Vespula ("small hornets"). But all together belong to the same subfamily Vespinae (real wasps).

But today's video... I was surprised at your complete lack of respect for, and abuse of your tools,
You were lucky with that drill, I've seen drills like that break fingers, wrists, and even fracture a man's jawbone, and a couple of young lads knocked clean out while doing what you did.
Those drills are over £200, yet you don't seem to care that it's destroyed?

mmmm they used to drill this by hand...argh. I think you should start with a small drill then the bigger drill bit should be sharp and moved back and forth more often. wet oak just clogs the bit up so keep it moving...good luck
Hi Alex, getting a bit worried mate. Not had any updates in near on 2 months, hope all is well.
On the armature of all power tools is a fan, when they are not turning and power is applied they are not getting cooling air flow.
It's also likely that the drill died because of Voltage Drop on a long extension cord. The electrical resistance in a small gauge cord over a long distance causes the volts to drop -- but not the amps. So the drill keeps pulling power and since it can't get the volts it wants, it pulls more amps, which smokes the motor windings. Windings are engineered for higher volts and lower amps but reverse this and you'll smoke your tools. DAMHIK
I love the videos, but your sound levels are really bad sometimes. I can barely hear you without being deafened when you start running a drill.

The drill also has a reverse gear. Maybe it would be enough to pre-drill it with a weaker drill bit. Or take a more powerful drill than this kitten.
When you drill with big auger bits you need to go in and out. Keeping the flutes clean.
The bosch was never designed for the level of vandalism you subjected it to.
