WHY OUR LOVE FOR AVOCADOS IS DESTROYING OUR PLANET ?

  • Avocado is a stone fruit with a creamy texture that grows in tropical climates. In contrast to other fruits that consist mostly of carbohydrates, avocados have an unusual consistency due to a high content of healthy fats.
Well, all this avocado adulation comes at a cost to the environment and the communities in which the fruit grows. In Mexico, for instance, demand for avocados has led to huge swathes of the country’s forests being illegally destroyed by farmers to clear land and make way for crops. “For many farmers in this region, avocados in particular are seen as an appealing product as they have high profitability, particularly when compared with traditional corn cultivation.
Despite the fact that avocados can be grown across the world, the primary producers of avocados globally remain in Central and South America, in part due to the topographical specificity of growing the fruit. Mexico is the largest producer (2.02 metric tonnes in 2017). In Mexico, avocado production accounts for over 500,000 acres and has been steadily growing as demand for the fruit in the Global North increases. The global industry today is worth $5.6 billion annually.
This increasingly international trade comes with a significant carbon footprint. Carbon Footprint Ltd estimates that two small avocados in a packet has a CO2 footprint of 846.36 grams (almost twice the amount of a kilo of bananas). Due to the production of avocados in Central and South America, the fruit travels long distances in order to reach consumers in the Global North. A Mexican avocado would have to travel 5555 miles to reach the UK. Given the distances, fruit is picked before it’s ripe and shipped in temperature-controlled storage, which is energy intensive.
To satisfy the growing popularity of avocados, imports from Mexico have skyrocketed. This gave financial wealth to a lot of farmers and greatly increased the number of people employed by this industry. Nevertheless, it also drew the attention of organized crime gangs and drug cartels such as the Caballeros Templarios (Knights Templar) or the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. So when you’re buying a Mexican avocado, the chances are that you’re giving a share of the revenue to criminals.
Please refer these blogs about avocados, so that you will get a clear idea about the negativities of planting avocados.

Nothing is wrong with eating avocados. What is dangerous is when the normal supply chain is hyped by over production. Businesses influence the normal production. Over supplying just to earn millions.

It's idiotic to blame consumers for destructive production methods. The idea that someone buying a piece of fruit is responsible for criminal gangs in other countries is ludicrous. The same can be said for destructive farming practices to produce the fruit.

I have been searching for a video that speaks what’s happening to avocado’s ,Over the last 2 years I have found that every avocado I purchase is either rotten or rotting. It is horrible even the organic kind from the Whole Foods and other places. I know I’m not a horrible fruit/ vegetables picker and I cannot be that unfortunate for choosing all the spoil ones even the unripened ones go bad so fast.

They’re not being grown properly, mishandling of the fruit during transportation, demand is high and avocados are very stubborn. This wasn’t an issue till it became mainstream. I remember growing up and be made fun of for eating avocados now everyone wants them.
Same thing is happening with the Nopal. Everyone is looking to get nopal and they can’t get it.

Overproduction of soil without changing crops are not good long term for growing plants. Soil needs time to relax and replenish, but with demand so high, farmers do not care about land maintenance.

What they don't say is that the avocado is on the same ship as the bananas that they claim put out less carbon. And then if you have 50 tons of bananas and 10 tons of avocados. Meaning the bananas actually cause more because they make up the most weight that needs more fuel to move.

Ok. Now let's discuss the anthropogenic damage done from the animal agriculture industry. If consumers be careful where they buy their avocados then it wont be so bad. Either way, it could never touch how much pollution, deforestation, and suffering is caused by animal ag.

The fact that the meat industry is worst doesn't make avocado production damage acceptable... Don't take as opposite what can be complementary.
Here in Chile are towns where people have to go with bottles to pick water from a truck every other day bacuase the avocado farms are taking all of the fresh water that used to be for human consumption. This is not a country where people have to get their clean water from a freaking truck... Yes, we do like to eat avocados but 90% of them are farmed to be exported to the US and Europe.

Yes it’s obviously understood we r discussing about water. Who said vegetables do not need chemicals. Yes any fruit or veggie when affected needs to be treated. Try natural methods if doesn’t work should obviously try with chemicals. The main topic of discussion here is not chemicals.
More water is required for meat, rice, and other items than avocados. First stop eating that. Hope u understand now.

Maybe you shouldn't eat avocados on every meal but plant foods are definitely more sustainable than animal based ones.
