Why Are America’s Honeybees Dying?

  • Nearly 90% of the country’s honeybees are needed to pollinate California’s almond trees. That means beekeepers travel from all over the U.S. to rent their bees to almond growers during pollination season. But honeybee colonies are dying at record rates, meaning these beekeepers are forced to work even harder.

Hate to break the news to that almond grower (9:09). We need more bees more than we need almonds grown in California. And this video just said, growing more bees is becoming more difficult. I say stop growing almonds in California, save some water and plant more bee friendly crops.

100% with you. Almonds use a *ton* of water. It's personally disheartening to see the rise in popularity of almond milk to be honest. If people are into milk alternatives, I advocate for *hemp* *milk* .

The reason beekeepers go to California almond growers is California almond blooms in the middle of winter while other parts of the country are still freezing without any flowers for the bees. They only stay there for few weeks in winters. It’s a good thing for both bees and beekeepers.

Monobees are also a problem. Honeybees are surprisingly inefficient compared to specialised wild bees and other polinators

Its a pity this piece doesn't focus more on biodiversity loss. Its a well known fact that yield is higher when there is a biodiverse suite of pollinators in a field... Focusing only on the invasive European honeybee, will only make the problem worse.
The european honeybees have been known to outcompete wild pollinators on their native plants for floral rewards, which can harm native plants, wild pollinators AND the european honeybee, because now there are less plants to get rewards from.
Over relying on the european honeybee and not focusing on wild pollinators won't solve the problem, only when both are tackled will we actually be able to see any real improvement

It's not because "people want their almonds". It's because people decide to grow almonds instead of other crops due to subsidies, insurance and overall greed for max profit over the heath of the nation. There are many crops that people want and will buy. It's up to farmers to have some scruples as well so take some responsibility.

With the California drought that ended in 2016, I was really surprised that the California government didn't just shut down the California almond industry and compensate the growers. Along with beef, it's the most water-intensive crop and shouldn't be grown in California in the first place.

    • @coater31
      @coater31 หลายเดือนก่อน

Or maybe don’t grow something that needs this much water in California, which is susceptible to drought.

I don't know why your making it out like honey bees are in danger of dying out. Their numbers have been on the rise for some time. It's the wild bees that we should really worry about. They are far more efficient than honey bees. Often only taking 100's to do the work of tens of thousands of honey bees.

The bees are MAINLY dying because of LOUD EXHAUST SYSTEMS. The high decibels are too loud for the bees and are distributing their nervous system.

As of April 2024, the United States has a record number of 3.8 million honeybee colonies, according to the USDA's 2022 Census of Agriculture. This is an increase of nearly a million colonies in the last five years, making honeybees the fastest-growing livestock segment in the country since 2007. However, some skeptics say that inflation and the definition of a bee colony may skew the data. The census only measures operations that produce at least $1,000 in products annually, so high honey prices could encourage some hobbyists to be counted. Additionally, the annual honey report shows a decline in colonies, while the census shows that the number of operations with bee colonies has increased much faster.

It's insane. In that area to create almonds, no bees, no water, mono cultures, etc..., just the money seems to be the one thing they want, care less about the rest. Fools will always run after money than social concerns. When no bees are left, boom.

  • @ShairyRahmanAurni

To grow the bees properly, we need to maintain the optimum temperature. That is 25-28 degree Celsius. Plus, you know better which plant species are no longer needed or needs to be eradicated to save bees. Please take considerable measures and save the bees.

as a person living in Dubai, United Arab Emirates who loves almonds in daily drinks in milks and shakes and etc I cant just abandon almonds but its a sad thing that millions of bees die to make for me my favorite almonds that I love in California!!!! the whole world has 1 and 1 only source for almond which is obviously California in US but its very sad that over 195 countries and nations demands are responsible for death of millions and billions of those innocent little things and US government well obviously classify it as live stock bcuz they dont want to loose out trade worth of 100s of billions of dollars and specially if anything effected that trade and business of almonds in California so people like me well not receive it so its a massive loose for 1 of the largest states in the U.S and 100s of billions of dollars are on the stake so no one in Washington wants to touch that bcuz in case of loose Washington wont be able to repay all that huge and massive business. no one can repay such huge money back. so for them its better to not touch.

Not really. There are species of plants whose flowers release pollen in the air and don't need pollinators, but for those that pollinators needed, you will more likely to just rip off flowers with wind, then to pollinate them.
