Polo of Shandur, set against the backdrop of the Hindu Kush and Hindu Raj Ranges is a pursuit of chivalry. Deep in the mountains of Northern Pakistan, an entire community pursues the ideal of sportsmanship in the game of Polo. Traditionally reserved for royalty, the freestyle Polo played at Shandur involves all levels of individuals across the society. The passion of the people of Chitral and Gilt for the game represents the ‘good life’ for freedom, beauty and excellence.
A deep love is expressed by everyone associated with it. It is a love that seeks the unbridled freedom of
open spaces, unbounded by rules and customs that seek to structure everyday life. It is this love that makes space for the game - a dance between humans, mountains, horses, and music.

Shandur celebrates the spirit of championship, and it is freely available to everyone who participates. The tournament of Shandur is the culmination of a yearlong cycle of planning and preparation, full of tense negotiations in and between the circles of power. The weeklong battle that ensues there in the disguise of a sport is the release of all anxieties.
At the highest polo ground in the world, the title of champion is fiercely defended and fiercely celebrated. The champion can be an individual, a family, a village, a valley or an entire people. Everyone who comes to watch this spectacle celebrates not specifically any victory, but the joy of life.
