watching pirlo pass was a thing of beauty. One reason the Italian side didn't qualify was that he was no longer the leader in the midfield. Congrats to a great career- we'll miss him

When Watching Pirlo "silky smooth" came to mind. The easiness, the flow was so effortless ... it was like watching a supernatural force, an element embodiment disguised in a human form.

I was around in 2001, first time seeing Italy players beat Romania. Gatusso, Nesta, Inzaghi were all superb, while Totti was also great, 3 players playing in Milan, I watched a few games, then I decided that they gonna be my favorite club. They lost in semies to Dortmund. All my friends just sided with whoever was the strongest at the time, like Real Madrid. They won the champions league next season, I picked them before they became the best, was the best feeling ever.
Now, don't get me wrong, I love Milan, and loved Pirlo, but seeing him first hand, he barely made the cut the early years. You can check how FIFA or Football manager rated him, around 12-14 skills out of 20, and max was like 16-17 on pass and decisions. And he was not a superstar. He had a few passes, cool stops, he made the effort 2-3x in a game to make a strong tackle, Gatusso had him covered for the rest. So he may have been a local talent but he was not a superstar from beginning, and had way weaker start than a lot of players in pro football. You wouldn't really notice him on the pitch. The strategy of Milan was to go up slowly to midfield, then a quick change of pace, everyone rushing to attack, even the full backs, Gatusso covering Pirlo on defensive midfielder position, Nesta and Stam/Silva/Simic/Bonera on the other side were left in defense only. And you could see glimpses of a genius, great passes at the right time. Both Rui Costa, Seedorf, Gatusso or Ambrosini were better than him, Ambro was the super sub in champions games, with a more offensive mindset than Gatusso, with extra energy and his huge size, good headers, changed the tides often.
One interesting thing I didn't know about was Ancelotti. He, as a player also played offensive midfielder, often on left or center. After his injuries, he was converted to deep lying midfielder for Roma. That was the main reason Pirlo was also taking that position. Ancelotti always made sure he can use players on their best position, and for Pirlo it wasn't defensive midfielder, he was slow, small and not so strong, he was a midfielder and usually offensive one but yeah, he was not so fast and not that good on dribbling either. I mean, Gatusso was world class defensive midfielder, one of the best of the time, teams didn't even use defensive midfielders in 2002, Real had Viera, all other clubs started using 3-5-2 oir 3-4-3 strategy with more defensive midfielders after the success of Milan. Using Gatusso on right midfield, then after tackle he just gave a small pass to Pirlo and the offense went to left side most of the time as Seedorf was creative enough to pass with him, wasn't a possession play most of the time, they just passed a few with Pirlo taking most of passes until he found someone free. Maldini on right also helped the formation, as he was closing down anyone in counterattack and giving great passes, he was doing more of the pace shift passes while he played.
So the strategy was genius, the players played in optimal position and the chemistry was good. Pirlo became better and better as the years went by. Actually if you watch a compilation, most of his videos feature him at Juventus, at age 30-31 he was on top of his form. He played for Italy too, and it was catching your eye, he was controlling the pace, he never lost a ball and he demanded respect. He was good before, but then he became super charismatic and confident.
