    Great video! This is a fantastic tutorial for dealing with dahlias. Some of us don't grow dahlias because of the effort to lift and store every year, but you make it look easy.

    I don't have to dig my dahlia's up as I live in Queensland, Australia. However, I always do just in case. One plant died and I left it in its pot and forgot about it. I just noticed that it has come alive and is thriving. What a wonderful surprise. I knew as soon as I recognized it that it was time to plant out my tubers from last year.

      Fab…. Sounds like it had just gone dormant.
      If it wasn’t for the wet, I’d be able to leave mine in the ground to go dormant over winter but unfortunately they’d just rot 😭

    Fab video! I live in London and it’s been crazy wet like the rest of the UK. My thoughts are to store them in newspaper overwinter in the shed. If they do show signs of wrinkles what would you do? Also, when it’s planting time next year will the tubers stored in newspaper have still developed eyes? x

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wrinkles to me would make me think they were drying out…. So I’d add a tiny bit of moisture but I’d be surprised to see that if they are in the shed.
      It’s temperature that makes the eyes begin to develop so when you take the tubers out of storage in spring, if the temperature has consistently hit 12c then you should start to see eyes develop

  • @raywachsmann

    Lovely video! Do you separate your tubers for 8 plants for example, or do you just plant the whole thing back in the ground? Thanks!

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If there is obvious “eyes” and it’s a large tuber I will divide it, but otherwise I plant it whole.
      Also I’ll only divide when I have space for more plants 😁

    I am doing this tomorrow. However, I had a big problem with my Dahlias in my pots. They developed some kind of fungus. After that leaves started dropping and then there were triangular small white moths..UGH! I spent the majority of this summer. cutting back and continually spraying to get rid of the moths. I think I should powder them with some type of anti fungal before storing them? Weirdly all the other Dalias planted in the ground were beautiful and no problem at all. Suggestions?

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fungus and moths… nightmare
      The idea of doing this is that you wouldn’t try to store any that show signs of fungus or mould as that will cause problems in storage, so my preference would be to replace those plants.
      Would be worth a bit of investigation to find out what exactly it was / caused it so you can take precautions for next year

    How about Dahlia imperialis-left in the ground. Can they survive a reasonable cold winter with protection (in New York, USA)

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can’t comment on your specific winters so I guess it’s one to try and see.
      I’d imagine that unless your ground really really freezes for months and months then they’d probably be ok if you add a nice layer of mulch over the top to help protect them.
      For me it’s more about the wet than the cold, they just don’t survive being so wet all autumn, winter and spring. 😬
