  • One of the most difficult distinctions for native English speakers to make when learning French is between the vowel sounds ‘ou’ and ‘u’. The ‘ou’ sound exists in English (in words such as food, true, moose, etc.) The ‘u’ sound? It’s a bit more complicated…
Fact: Knowing how to correctly pronounce these distinct vowel sounds is super important as it can change the entire meaning of a word. For example, “pouce” (thumb), and “puce” (flea). Confusing the two sounds might lead you to ask your new neighbor where to find the local ‘“thumb’ market” (marché aux pouces) instead of the local “‘flea’ market” (marché aux puces). We can guarantee this first one isn’t going to make you any new friends any time soon…
Tip: So, how do we make the ‘u’ sound? To start, make the vowel sound “ee” like you would when pronouncing the word cheese.
Now, without moving your teeth, tongue, or jaw, hold on to that “ee” sound and move your lips into a small “o” shape. Et voilà - you’re now one step closer to sounding like a native speaker.
