- This documentary, filmed in two parts, (this is part two) examines the trend of struggling public houses in the UK.
Around 18 pubs a week are closing their doors. Some of the reasons are highlighted in these short films.
This second episode concentrates on the Batley area of West Yorkshire and examines some of the reasons why pubs are finding it difficult to survive. Two locals are interviewed in the West End Pub and give their thoughts and memories. Also the owners of a Revived Pub, "The George" which is now an Indian Restaurant in the heart of Batley.
The interviews in this film were all set in The West End on Upper Commercial Street one of the oldest pubs in Batley.
A survey was undertaken by Batley & Birstall Civic Society members Megan James and David Stead and we spoke to pub goers Brian Saville and Raymond Wheal as well as Indian Restaurant owners Mahmood Bostan and his son Usman Mahmood Bostan.

It's a real shame to see Batley decline so much. I grew up here and remember the fantastic nights out down the golden mile where you'd have to que up for every bar/club. It's sad to see the end of pub culture. Only the city centre pubs and chains will survive long term the small town local pub has had its day sadly.
Thanks for watching Bobby
Mucky x with big tony on the door 😊 if you couldn't pull in there it was time to give up.

Thanks for watching and commenting Tony...
A few reasons for pubs closing are immigration, certain immigrant groups don't drink and see pubs/alcohol as a sin. So as the locals move out and the elderly pub goers die, when the immigrants become a majority in that area, the pubs close down and become something else.
You also have ASDA, Tesco etc selling alcohol dead cheap, 10 cans of Carling for £11, some pubs where I live charge between £2-3 for one pint of Carling.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. You make very valid points and concur with our findings. Best wishes
There is a great Irony & paradox to all this-A pip of truth,at the core of this theme.
Growing up in Batley-Pubs,Inns etc were frowned upon in the South Asian Community (Dens of Sin-they were called). The hypocrisy is that many New arrivals drank at these places as they settled in (both Pakistani & Indian Nationals of all faiths). As the locals moved out & Immigrant communities established their own base-The community hub & culture declined, these buildings were snapped up & re-puropsed for use as Masjids,Madressahs & Commercial/Buisness Enterprises etc.
What was once seen as 'Religiously Polluting & Spiritually Contaminating',in our SA communities-quickly became forgotten as the mighty pound sterling the 'New God' of prosperity and prospects-gradually overcome any qualms & Misgivings. These places were social/cultural hubs for the local populas.
As of social integration & assimilation-The time for that has long elapsed,no one cares about such issues in our local areas, they have their own identities, forgetting the rich history & heritage of these local towns.

Hi Granville, thanks for watching and good luck with your venture.
1. On-demand TV means you can watch what you want anytime. Why go out in the evening.
2. A lot of pubs look old and unappealing to women.
3. People are drinking less alcohol.
Hi Jacob, thank you for your thoughts....best wishes, Mike
