Cumbres & Toltec Reading 6 Chime Full History

- In the 80s the Reading 6 chime which arrived in Chama in a barrel or box along with some other whistles, the C&TS loved its sound and was functioning perfectly until it started shrieking. "Cracking" being the correct terminology for shrieking. The whistle cracked because the languid plate was very worn from years of use. The edges eroded from steam cutting. Cracking is the screeching sound, this is because the steam pressure becomes so great that the sound waves bouncing off the end of the chamber become so increased that the chamber can't handle the volume of steam thus producing the "cracking" sound.... The C&TS tried everything to disassemble it for a repair including a week in the hot tank, to no avail. Unfortunately the truth is the whistle disappeared or got stolen....
(This is actually a re-uploaded version of the original video I made on this, the original one felt plain and had some problems, the sound wasn't in sync with the video and the descriptions in the video were too short of a time to read but since then I've made some edits fixed some of the problems gave it better quality and also added some more clips of the whistle)
Really sad the whistle got junked. It sounded nice in the 80s. Very unfortunate it wasn't able to be repaired
Fun fact: The Whistle was also heard on 484 in the movie “Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade” in 1989. When the train first appears as River Phoenix is racing towards it on the horse, 484 blows the whistle.

I get what you mean. Could have been a bit better but I still really like it, remember watching it a lot as a kid. Definitely love that they had the C&TS included in the movie.

I don't know because this one kinda sounds different
But with those engines they make those whistles sound at their full potential with a high blowing rate, but for some reason these locomotives make this whistle sound deeper and with a medium blowing rate at the same time

Who knows, but #90 has had its 6 chime ever since it arrived in Strasburg

@@justinmeeks1868it can't be that whistle, Reading made so much of these whistles that they all sound somewhat the same but this whistle sounded different to me
@@TheSteamGuy5125 What makes you think it cant be from one of the two crusader engines? Its not any different in its manufacture than any of the others, it was just equipped on a Crusader engine. Reading made enough to equip their 4-6-2's with them and that's it, so in the end they all came from a G class of some kind.
The slightly worn Reading 6 Chime is definitely a spectacle one would hope to recapture on the C&TS once again.
Who knows, if they have the money, they could pay another tourist line like Strasburg to help them fix it

Rizzoli products don't sound as good. They use fabricated steel on a lot of their whistles, which really messes up the sound. Cast Brass is what they need to do if they want the authentic sound
